I was thinking the same. As much love I have for Star Trek, SG-1 was Sci-fi perfection.
Not a huge Trek fan, but god do I miss Stargate. Maybe one day it will get a reboot like Trek did.

O.T. I thought of replicators from Stargate when I saw the title, but this is only a slight letdown. It means I can leave my P90 in storage.
Shame you only have one. You could dual-wield them like Teal'c did. So badass.
Eh, it's only a model. What I would really like is a zat gun, or Ronons Particle magnum.
So you could say it's a.... replica(tor)?

Sorry, bad pun.

Good!

OT: Star Trek has shown us the replicators that we want. SG-1 has shown us the replicators that we'll probably end up with.

Soooo... How does one make friends with a 3D printer? This is important.

Weve had digital 3d printing for a few years now. This is really not that new. In fact its not "Version 1.0" as 3d printers have already had multiple fundamental revisions. I think we are closer to V.3.0 or higher because now we are expanding their capacity to more organic things like food, as well as what will make 3d printing and "physibles" potentially a bigger revolution to the world than what the internet was now that we are entering the first phase where the technology has graduated and refined itself to become more widespread through greater tech efficiency allowing for the product to be sold for a fraction of what it used to cost to make it.

I liken it to what home video did for film and looking to its effects in application by looking at the new world it created with further advancements like Youtube.

Other Thought:

Actually I have been watching this with great concern because there has long been a major storm brewing and this may be the stray that breaks this particular camels back. We exist in a civilization and society in a very dangerous place. We have had Revolution after revolution. Technological advent after advancement. We keep "improving" these fundamentals but yet we are steadfast (through public manipulation of course) and willfully defiant in allowing such steps of progress to fully extend their natural course.

Despite moving almost 10 different eras forward we are still at the whims of industrial revolution systems and ideology. In fact we have seen our corporate overlords proactively invent artificial scarcity simply to prop up and perpetuate our existing systems. The problem is that no matter how hard you try you can only push forward but gain no forward momentum for so long before something has to give. We are in that state now and that is a MAJOR reason why we are going through our current economic crisis. The system has long been this glass celing that we repeatedly bang our heads on, get knocked back a little and try to break through again. The concern is with how complex the financial gymnastics we have to do in order to keep most of our species in industrial era capitalism that rewards citizens for sating their bloated greed, we already see the strain of putting that square peg in the round hole and either the old system will have to be destroyed to pave the way for new ideological approach that is a betterment for all mankind Or we will end up slashed to ribbons bleeding from thousands of lacerations and crushed under the weight of the glass ceiling finally breaking and collapsing right on top of us.

Didn't replicators basically make stuff out of thin air? (Yes yes, I know it was more complicated than that.) 3d printers still need material to be put in first before anything can be made.
Not quite. Star Trek replicators use a similar principle to the transporter. The repliactor breaks down matter into energy, but then reforms it into whatever material you happen to be replicating. As long as they have spare matter and the energy to power the thing, it ought to work.

Out of curiosity...does the pirate bay have any food-related items? Is it possible to illegally download food yet? I don't have the means to do so but I'm really looking forward to the day when that becomes a thing.

As for 3D Printing in general...yay future!

Same here. Man, when 3D printers start making 3D printers, that's where I start building the bunker.
There's the RepRap [http://reprap.org/wiki/Main_Page], a 3D printer made of plastic parts that can print out more RepRaps. Does that count?

OT: I...thought of the Stargate replicators as well. What does that say about us that so many thought of the evil techno-spiders from outer space, rather than the utopian device from Star Trek?

Secretly we all want to watch the world burn...
Distopian future are just so much more fun the Utopian ones, I've never liked Star Trek (except for Voyager) because it's such a Utopian future, everything is perfect and the protagonists are part of the futures equivalent of the United States today, a super power who's technology is normally vastly superior to their enemies (except when the Borg show up)and they fly around in what is to spaceships what the USS Missouri was to warships in WW2.

In short there is never any doubt they will overcome the challenge.

Though I can't help but feel it won't be long before something with this technology goes too far or some seriously heavy rules get put in place to stop it making a real difference to the world.

my god I had the exact same thought when I read the title for this thread lol.

Silly lacktheknack, that just gives them more matter to use to assemble more replicators.

They did self replicating printing machines years ago. Food is apparently harder.

Nope! They're made out of plastic!

Once we have steel replicators, that's when I pull out the Necronomicon.

Sure, they're not that advanced yet because they're basically version 1.0 .

But guys, we have replicators. From star trek. This is amazing.
sorry to be a buzz kill, but it really isn't, it's a cool food printer sure but just that isn't a replicator

it's cool but it doesn't have.. well any of the features a replicator does it can't recycle it can't make anything instantly it can't make different foods, it can't make objects other than food
and it can't turn energy into matter, and.. that's really the main issue! the point of treklore replicators was energy = anything.

if a food printer is a replicator, then well vending machines have been doing the same for generations really.
the food exists somewhere and it gets piped to you 'by some means'
