Okay, I'm not sure if this is filed in the right place, or if there are others on this, but I've just finished reading up on the latest BS on the case and I now pose a question to the escapist.

Where do you sit on this? Personally, I'm with geo because he's not sony. Sony has suddenly turned very aggressive, uncomfortably so, and is treating it's customers like criminals. It makes me feel that they are trying to divert attention away from something (maybe how mediocre the PS3 library is) by raising a huge racket, or maybe place blame on their slowly sinking (IMO) system by claiming "HACKERS! PIRATES!" but either way, they are hard to sympathize with.

Sorry if there are other threads on this already, or if this is misfiled, I wasn't sure where to put it ^.^;

I personally dont care either way, I can still play games and watch stuff on my PS3, which is essentially why I bought the thing.

Buuuuuuuut, if I was pressed into taking a side, I'd go with Sony. This Geo fool just seems too cocky for my liking, and thats one of my pet peeves.

I'm with Sony.

They're really going at this the wrong way, though.

But Geo is just a fucking turd sandwich. Or is he more of a giant douche?

PLACE YOUR VOTES.

Despite thier questionable methods im still with Sony.

Geo just doesnt seem to deserve the support he gets.

both sides seem to have valid arguments, so I don't really know where to side with. Doing what you want with your property (said PS3) seems perfectly legitimate to me, but opening the door for people to pirate games and such is less than legitimate, and I can't imagine a good compromise at the moment.

Also, the tactics both sides are using is really annoying, but that may just be the legal system at its finest.

I feel Geohot was fine with modding his console, he should be allowed to do that.
The problem I have is that he posted the root key.

I'm with Sony.

They guy's being a dick about his stuff, and I'd like to see a message sent without Anon barging in and making it known that you cant run a business without them getting in your business.

My thoughts exactly.

While I'm still willing to admit that piracy is wrong. The Cinavia feature on the PS3 can now block you from watching files on your PS3 like you would your computer. I really don't care because I have a computer but its still kind of a ***** move on SONY's part but people like geohot have prompted them to revamp their security and in the process take out features that are being exploited.

Sony has me on the Anit-Piracy and rootkey fronts. That's it for them. Geohot, well, he turned into an ass and makes me want to kick him in the balls for acting like so. So, until he starts acting like a big boy, all consideration of even partial support is defenestrated.

I want GeoHot to win because if Sony wins, they've got a legal precedent to say that we don't own their consoles after we put down our money for them, which I feel is complete bullshit. Also because Sony put themselves in this mess by removing Install Other OS in the first place, which I think they should be getting sued for. They forced customers to choose between which one of two advertised features they wanted to keep, saying "Okay you can have Install Other OS, or you can have Playstation Network and all of its features, but you can't have both anymore." That is complete bullshit and there should have been greater outrage and a really big lawsuit over it.

Plus, Sony's tactics for trying to win the case so far have basically been telling every lie they can to the court. "Geohot fled the country to hide from our legal wrath!" No, he took a vacation he'd been planning long before you decided you wanted to destroy him. "He tampered with evidence!" No, he gave you the hard drives you asked for. If you wanted more computer parts, you should have asked for them. "We found his PSN account!" No you didn't. Even before your inability to properly match a serial number was brought to light, all you had was a PSN account being made in the same city where Geohot lives. That is not enough to say he was the one who made it. I have to ask, does this judge ever plan to punish Sony for all their blatant lies?

So yeah. I really just don't want Sony to win. They're ultimately trying to take away my rights as a consumer, and they're acting like super douchebags in the courtroom.

Guess it's a good thing he didn't do that then. Unless you found a PS3 piracy program he coded that nobody else knows about? Otherwise, this is just blaming the wrong person for illegal actions other people perform. Hey, I've got an idea for a compromise. Go sue the actual people who wrote firmware and other programs that DO let people pirate games. Go sue the people that upload and/or download the pirate copies of PS3 games. That I can support. But suing a guy who only posted a key that you can't do jack shit with if you don't know how to write your own software? No. If he had posted "Here's the key and here's instructions on how to use it to pirate" then maybe. But that's not what happened, so Sony's really aiming at the wrong guy if their concern is piracy.

What he did is crack the PS3, which may or may not have allowed pirates to have their way with the console. The details are a little fuzzy, and it's easier for Sony to pick out the supposed "source" of the problem to make an example out of him. Sorry I was a little unclear, I wasn't saying Geo actually caused any harm. I was pointing out that Sony's argument against piracy is valid, but they may be going after the wrong person. Personally, once companies start ignoring the pirates and focus on providing a better product, this should become less of a problem.
