At any rate, this isnt not news. News is "new" - thus the root word. Seems like the Germans are starting to trot behind the Australians in chase of the "Games r bad" bandwagon though.
Hey, we built that freakin bandwagon and probably even invented it!

To be more serious:
Our gaming industry is growing like almost everywhere else on the planet. Soon it will also have a lobby in the government and a new scapegoat for society's inevitable downfall will be found quickly.

Basically this whole issue is nothing more than "Grr those darn kids and their video games!" *shakes cane*

Oh and would you mind quitting with the nazi stuff? Really getting old, like, what, +-70 years?
Right, sorry...Was just pointing it out because a large portion of games take place during WWII and therefore portray them as such. It was a personal opinion so much as an observation. My apologies regardless.

...I don't want to be a dick, but hasn't listening to a loud voiced far-wing radical screaming propoganda about people of a particular ethnic group or lifestyle NOT worked out for Germany in the past?

Yes yes I know, Godwyns law. I'm not comparing these stupid scientists to Hitler. Okay I am. No wait, i'm not. Wait, yes I am.

Damnit, i'm not sure what i'm doing. Look my point is, they're taking the non violence thing to such an extreme that they're trying to oppress others- an ironic turn considering what PUT THEM on the non violence path to begin with!

This movement is just Germans trying to distance themselves from anything violent, in a vain attempt to pretend the Holocaust never happened.

Unsurprisingly, they also have very strict censorship laws for games over there.

Nein Nein Nein! I've always admired Germany as being a bit more intelligent and forward thinking than many other countries. I hope they don't screw it all up through releasing this sort of scheiße!

To play devil's advocate, first person shooter games probably aren't very good for the 'soul' whatever that is. I mean, I can't really imagine Jesus or Buddha being fans. I mean Jesus probably prefers civilisation games, and Buddha strikes me as more of an rpg man.
God likes FPSes. It reminds him of the Old Testament.

Gamers, we can build a nation that doesn't suck arse. We have the technology.

This is ridiculous - do they think that violence was in any way practiced less before video games? Violence has always been a major part of society (for better or worse), and unfortunately, videogames have become the scapegoat in this case.

The Germans also thought the Holocaust was a great idea.

Disclaimer: I am German, I can say these things.

Well I'm not going to say what but the german culture are really famous for something violent so violent that it's makes them hypocrites for calling video game culture violent
That's just ignorant. Yes, it's true the Germans were a militaristic nation, but after the 1950s they didn't really have the strength or the support to become militaristic again. They've changed, you know, just as all countries have.

By your logic, for example, us British shouldn't be complaining about slavery in Sierra Leone because our imperious ancestors had their fair share of slaves. It just doesn't make sense.

Hey, does anyone remember what Atilla The Hun's favorite video game was?
Tetris. He was also a big Kong fan.
Edit: Omg I just got a mental image of him riding on his pony in the middle of a slaughterfield humming the tune Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8k-FMLcW7e8] Too funny.

Well shit, no wonder he was such a strapping young lad.

The funniest thing is, that with how big the video game industry is now, that if the ban were to succeed the economy in Germany would be thrown into even more turmoil as 10000's of jobs in games/related shops/etc. would be lost.

So I would like to know one thing, would they like to be responsible for the collapse of the German economy?

lol...sorry but this is no real argument since there are no big deveopers/publishers like EA, Ubisoft etc. located in germany. The video industry might be big-in Japan and the US, but not in good old germany. 10 000s of Jobs is wayyy to exaggerated and the shops that sell games right now also offer DVDs, music CDs and stuff like that.
And there is another thing you forget: For each person that would loose the Job because of a videogame-ban they would have to hire 3 new guys that have to search all the cars on the border, watch the forbidden downloads of games and confiscate the thousands of games that are already out there in the shops and living rooms ;)

Yeah, it MUST be violent video games, right? I mean war, violence, racism, crime, murder, rape, and theft never occurred before violent video games! We lived in a peace, white picket fence existence where lollipops grew on bushes!

Oy vey.

Aren't there more important issues to worry about? Hunger? AIDS? Cancer? Why do people spend so much time on this crap.
i know, if they spent as much time on developing medical advances as they do protesting we would have cured aids and cancer awhile ago

The video game producing industry in germany is growing. Not as huge as in Japan or the USA (who wonders?), but some of the games can easily compare to the global market like Crysis, Anno 1703, Sacred 2, Drakensang, Settlers, Gothic (before part 3 ;) ), Edna Bricht Aus, Anka and Geheimakte.

The problems are: nearly all of them are Western RPGs, Adventures and Economic-Games... very famous genres here, but not world wide and they are all released on the PC.

Before this current console gen. the PC was the favorite gaming system in germany. Now, as a gaming plattform, the PC is nearly dead (compared to the vital console market) and that hit the german teams unprepared.

This is what the Angry German Kid (If you haven't seen that video before, you can't have been on the net for very long) was on about. His video was a form of satire - How the government seemed to think gamers were like.
If I lived a few hundred miles south of where I live now (UK) and was German, I'd start a petition against that petition. >_>
