I honestly never felt that GFWL was bad, least my time with it on DoW 2 was pretty good and the achievements carried over to my Xbox account. I think people are just too picky with it. More so over a sale as good as Civ IV Complete for only ten bucks!

Any topic even loosely related to PC gaming, ANY TOPIC, boils down to:

I LOVE STEAM! I LOVE VALVE!

It's sickening really.

While I am interested in purchasing Civilization IV some time in the future, I am going to stick to buying a retail copy.

Besides, even if I wanted to use digital distribution, Steam is a better choice for the simple fact that the future of GFWL remains uncertain at best.

I love Valve, but I am not very fond of Steam. It may be the lesser evil in terms of DRM schemes, but I still wouldn't consider it a good thing. Plus, I prefer retail copies of games.

GFW Live isn't great, sure, but I'm really surprised that so many people are passing up on such a great deal because of it. It's really not a virus.
It isn't because of Live. We just don't want to be accused of piracy more than we already are. It is dangerously close to buying it used. Think of the publishers.

How is Steam a DRM scheme? Any games you purchase are tied to your account forever. You can download them as many times as you want.

Most haven't used it, but it doesn't help you said it sucks four times in your article.
It does suck and I'm certainly not suggesting otherwise. I'm just saying that Civ 4 Complete more than counterbalances that suck. As a friend of mine once said, the game box would have to jump off the shelf and punch you in the nuts not to be worth that price.

Steam is and has always been DRM. Well-camouflaged DRM, but DRM nonetheless.

I would change the phrase, "well-camouflaged" to "well-behaved" (or perhaps, "best-behaved we've yet seen"), but, yeah, kinder, gentler DRM is one of the main selling points of Steam to devs, and from experience, mostly a balm to gamers, mostly.

Andy's totally right.
