Hello Escapist Forum

I am looking towards getting my first job for this summer and the first business I am going to apply at is, Gamestop.

I know the odds are slim, but I would love to work there. If I could get paid well I would work there my whole life. It's just a environment I know I could fit in to well.

The biggest problem is that I'm 15, my dad knows some people that work there (if that even matters) so if I can get passed that I have a chance.

So I was wondering if anyone can give my any suggestions on how to up the chances of making it there. Like things I may want to say about myself, my clothing, things I may want to add in my application(I've never even read one of these out) ect.

I know some of you will be saying simply to get a different job, well this is also a problem, sadly I am a negative person towards, well, most things. It sucks I know, and I wish I could change it but I simply do not have the will power to, nor do I care enough to, so working at a place like a animal shelter, will gross my out and I will end up quieting because I feel like I am throwing time I could use doing something entertaining away for something that will make me puke.

Then there are jobs like grocery stores, well the problem with this is that I have to deal with people that I know from school, a lot, I don't like the majority of these people, I just moved from a school that is nearly completely opposite to this new school and everyone seems like they are either retarded or a complete truck hole. I'm not interested in having to talk to these people over the summer at all, let alone work with them, no.

Thanks for reading and hopefully helping from SingleTap

Dress smart enough.
Don't go in with a tracksuit pants and so on when asking for the job.
What do I wear, I have every type of normal clothing, from suits to t-shirts.

Look confident and don't be shy to study on your gaming. If you're selling something, at least know what you're selling. Also, don't dress like a gamer. Seriously, look respectable. I almost forgot! DO NOT look scarred, look confident even if it's hard. You'll be dealing with people at Gamestop and if the manager sees you're unable to deal with just one then the chances of getting hired are slim.

I'd recommend a volunteer job at your age maybe at a pet shelter or something (Chicks dig this), and it would look REALLY good on a resume...

You'll never get away with faking your age (sorry), you'll need to give them your DOB and SSN for the job and then they'll find out ether way...

Yeah that's a problem, I despise places like that. I know a jobs a job, but this job is just for me to make a bit of money, nothing that I necessarily need. I'm sadly a very negative person towards most things, which sucks, but it's true (I get it from my mother) and when I think of working at a pet shelter I think of dirty animals, obnoxious noises, disgusting smells, animals having to be put to death, and I know all this would make me puke, daily.

Most businesses do background checks and they will find out that you are under 16 since the government makes a big fuss over child labor laws. If you lie they will not hire you and if they do by chance hire you under the premise that you are 16 they can and will fire you.

If they hire you, it'll be a pretty cake job. File games, clean the store, sell product, close shop. Rinse and repeat. However, I wouldn't recommend working at Game Stop right off the bat, even though you're probably a game enthusiast and enjoy the environment. My first job was a bagger at a nearby Publix and that was probably one of the best jobs I had. Fast advancement, weekly pay, decent work hours (especially for persons under 18), and hot moms and their daughters from sun-up to sun-down.

Game Stop, being usually small storefronts, will generally have a small staff and a real low turnover rate. The opportunity for advancement is probably very low, the hours will be super-weak, and the novelty of working where most everybody within your age range goes to shop and (mostly) loiter will wear off really fast. Especially if upper management is there. Unless you're selling a product, they expect you to be working. That's pretty generalized for all workplaces, but most workplaces have a daytime staff of more than (maybe) four employees and (probably) two managers. It would be better for you to work someplace with a large employee count (like a grocery store) and be an outstanding employee, rather than working at someplace where the total employee count is roughly less than twenty and trying to stand out. It looks good on a resume' that you were able to impress the management of a large store and gain bonuses and acclaims than simply rising through the ranks due to a horribly slow attrition rate.

There was a quote my Sergeant used to use, but I forgot it. Something akin to "Be the best out of hundreds, not the last out of a few".

Honey, I am twenty and folks won't give me a job. And you are fifteen and legally cannot operate in a business where "M" rated games are sold. Legally, you cannot touch them. Tough cookies kid. It is next to impossible to get a job as a teen. The unemplyment rate of teens is a whopping 85% in the US.

In otherwords, good luck.

Don't steal shit until at least 2 weeks after you've gotten the job

Learned that the hard way

Your not going to get hired. Sorry to say something like that but over here the gamestops are pretty strict with who they hire.

You've picked the worst time to get hired at gamestop too. It's summer. They will need less help what with releases going down to a trickle.

Also your 15. Your still useless to most company work forces. Try getting a job at a grocery store like publix or any store that captilizes on hiring young'uns.

I need to get a job as well* so I will be watching this thread closely.

OT: Dress smart, don't fidget around while being interviewed (don't scratch your face, even if you think he's/she's looking) and know the answers to the basic questions before entering the room. Know why you want to work for them, why they should give the job to you, etc. Also make sure to mention any volunteering you did that could possibly be related to the job you want; employers love hard workers. Keep your cool and hope to hell he isn't biased against you for something you can't control.

*Not my first job, mind you

Aww man working at gamestop. I hope you dont look tooyoung cause if you do youre probably going to get a bit of flak from angry customers. If you do get the job and they start getting angry at you just get the manager. Quite a few people treat sales clerks like dirt. I wish you luck though. And im not too sure about where you live but here you need to be 16 to legally apply for a job

Well, I know legally you can't work there until you're 16, so I don't know how you plan on getting a job there anyway.

I guess if you're very knowledgeable about games and aren't a dick, they may hire you.

Eh, I hear GameStop actually has a reputation of treating their employees like crap. I recommend you watch the video series "Zero Originality". It's by a man acting as whistleblower on GameStop, since it's by a former employee.

That's the only gaming store in the area, if I don't feel comfortable, I leave them.

Well, if they like you enough, they'll hire you despite your age. That's how I got my first job at 11 :D

But I also applied to work there and have been hired. I've yet to work, but from what I hear...it's not so good, but there's nothing else I really want to do right now, so I just went for it.

But just as fair warning, I hear they treat people like total shit, the district managers are usually fucking assclowns who typically don't know shit about games and they can be stingy with money.
