Timesplitters III.
Try the MGS games, I still have 2 to play.
Resident Evil 4.
Tekken 4 and 5.

Ever heard of a little action adventure game called Okami? Yeah, that's pretty good.

I-Ninja is a pretty cool little game too. Not the best game in the world but it's a really cool action platformer with a lot of personality.

And of course there's the obvious Ico and Shadow of the Colossus to mention as well.
yeah, what he/she said. especially about ico/SOTC. if you havent played ico or SOTC, you are missing out on whats basically art distilled into game form. although, if you have a ps3, the ico/SOTC collection is the better choice, as the framerate is fine, and it just plain looks better.

I'll mention my normal list:

Champions of Norrath
Persona 4
Final Fantasy X
Kingdom Hearts 1&2
Grandia 2
Star Wars Battlefront 1&2
Onimusha 1-3
Genji
Beyond good and evil
Prince of Persia 1-3
Shadow of the Collossus
GTA San Andreas (If you can get past some dodgy shooting controls)
Disgaea

That's about all I can remember of the PS2 games I still play. In other words those are the games that still hold up today.

EDIT: Forgot MGS3!

I guess for action/adventure and platforming, go for the Sly Cooper or Ratchet and Clank trilogies.

I really need to buy that game again, lent it to a friend and then a schism occured in our group of friends, so now we are on opposite sides.
Fucking hate when that shit happens...

OT: Don't really know of any good JRPGs so I'm just gonna go with the Jak and Daxter series.

I think most of the ones I would have mentioned have already been so a few multiple times so I will just reiterate some that I think havent been mentioned enough and a few that havent been mentioned yet:-

Firstly Okami you say your borrowing that though so its sorted but it must be played its fantastic
there is also Disgaea but Disgaea 4 is current gen and a better game so get that.

Prince of Persia sands of time I wouldnt recommend touching the other 2 but your call.

Shadow Hearts Covenant I can highly recommend this game it had me smiling throughout unless you like your games super serious get this.

Dark Chronicle is a sequel to Dark Cloud which I thought was a bit naff this was much better Rogue Galaxy is arguably better still though so your call even though they are a bit different.

Fighting game wise its a bit harder to recommend any not because there was a lack of quality games but because most of the good series that were about then you can get now either in an updated and generally better edition or via digital download with online play at the same sort of price as you would pay for the original.

I mean there was Tekken Tag (I hated it however it seems I am in the minority but Tekken Tag 2 is out soon anyway) there is DOA2 which may still be worth getting even though DOA5 is out soon simply because the game is everywhere and dirt cheap as well as great fun the best DOA out imo by a fair way although hopefully 5 will alter that, SC2 and 3 both of which were great fun and had the best single player modes of the series even though the original and 5 are better in the fighting. Theres also Capcom vs Marvel 2 but you can get that digitally with online play now.

One I would say to definitely get if you can find it is Capcom vs SNK 2 mark of the millenium 2001 for my money its the best fighting game on the PS2 unfortunately my copy got stole a few years ago and I dont really want to shell out much for another as I know I wouldnt be able to devote much time to playing it now but it is a great game.

Theres also P4, Ico, Soc etc all the ones that have been mentioned loads of times already.

Alright, let's see...

Silent Hill 2 is the single greatest game ever made in the history of forever. Ever. Play it. Beat it 5 times at least. It's hard to overstate my satisfaction. Obligatory Portal reference when talking about how awesome something is.

Mister Mosquito kicks ass. One of the best games of my childhood. Sure, it's simple, meaningless, characterless, etc. etc., it was also kind of the original Shadows of the Colossus, in a way.

On that topic, Shadows of the Colossus, obviously.

And, On that topic, Ico, obviously.

And, on the topic of obvious choices, the Persona games.

And, on that topic, Shin Megami Tensei games.

Psychonauts if you haven't played it on another system.

Sly Cooper, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, etc.

Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy XII, obviously.

Metaphorically, I was going with a remix of "throw a dart at a wall of pictures" thing.

Here are some random picks from my own collection (which I had to look up because I tend to forget every game I've ever played when these topics come up):

- Maximo: Ghosts to Glory/Army of Zin (platformer/action-adventure)
- Disaster Report (Adventure/Survival-type)
- Okami (Adventure)
- Devil Summoner 1 & 2 (JRPG. Though I seem to be the only person in the world who enjoyed it. But you might like it, because the protagonist doesn't say a word throughout the whole game. Neither does anyone else. Also, it was great fun.)
- King's Field 4 (First person adventure/RPG)
- Eternal Ring (see above)
- Tokobot Plus (Platformer)
- The Sly Cooper games (Platformers)
- Beyond Good & Evil (Action-adventure)
- Dark Chronicle (JRPG)
- Dr. Muto (Platform/Action-adventure. Odd control scheme, but still very fun.)
- Freedom Fighters (Third-person Shooter)
- Ico (Adventure)
- Headhunter (Action/Adventure)
- Project Eden (Adventure/Action/Puzzler/Third-person Shooter/Whatever)
- Rogue Galaxy (JRPG. Characters can be a little annoying, but it can be overlooked.)
- Rez (Kind of railshooter)
- Silent Hill 2 (Adventure/Survival-horror)

Another question for all of you PS2 owners: How's the memory card capacity? The store near my house has a deal going where you can get a PS2-slim + cords + 1 controller for $40 and all peripherals are 50% off with the purchase (this includes extra controllers, memory cards, etc.). I imagine the memory cards will be pretty cheap so do you think I should get two or is one enough?
one should be alright I had 1 8MB and most ps2 saves are in 10's of KB so it should be fine.

One game I recommend is Radiata Stories
An awesome RPG that has its funny parts but the main aspect is that you recruit your 4 team mates out of like 150+ different characters with their own abilities and weapons and what not and there is a day and night cycle that you gotta get down cause EVERY npc has their own little day to day routine if you plan to recruit people.

It's a PS1 game, but Street Fighter Alpha 3 is still one of the best fighting games out there!

Grandia 2 is a pretty good JRPG as are any of the Dragonquest games.

After looking on my shelf, here's what I have and recommend (if I didnt like it I would have given it away or sold it a long time ago)

Shadow of the collossus (best game on the system IMO)
Summoner (my favorite RPG on the system)
God of war 1 and 2
Hulk: Ultimate destruction
Xenosaga 1, 2, and 3
Persona 4
Star Ocean: Till the end of time
Ultimate spider man (not a perfect spider man game but I think it gets the web swinging and sandbox style near perfect)
Devil may cry 1 and 2
Area 51 (its an average fps, whats cool is the setting)
The Bard's tale
Defender
Dragon quest 8 (although the silent protagonist gets on my nerves everything else is pretty good)
Mercenaries: Playground of destruction
Monster hunter
Armored core 2
Star wars Battlefront 2
Viewtiful Joe
X-Men legends 1 and 2

So I realized the other day, due to my lack of a PS2, that there are a lot of games I missed out on over the last decade that I'd like to catch up on. I have a retro game store near where I live and have decided to stop by there sometime today or tomorrow to pick up a PS2 and possibly some games. I have a lot of friends that can lend me their libraries, but I will likely buy a few myself.

So yeah, I suppose this is a kind of suggestion thread. Lay out which titles are your favorite for the PS2 or any other recommendations for it. I'll be starting off playing Persona 4, but I will consider plenty of genres when making my picks. Games I'd likely enjoy on the platform:

- Good JRPGs, fun combat mechanics/good story/non-bitchy manchild protagonist

- Really good platformers! I realize that there are plenty of good platformers for the PS2, but I have enough 1st party Nintendo games. If you suggest a platformer it had better be fucking phenomenal

- Fighting games, this is a weird one I'll admit. If there are any classic fighting games a fan of the genre must have lay it on me

- Action/Adventure, there are plenty of these so feel free

- Misc., I'll be open to anything else that's worth playing
I like your style!

Anyway, here's my two cents:

- Good JRPGs, fun combat mechanics/good story/non-bitchy manchild protagonist -

1) Shadow Hearts: Covenant: fun combat (Judgement Ring system), good story (alternative World War I scenario) and a non-bitchy protagonist (see spoiler below if you want proof, but skip it if you plan to check this game out). The original Shadow Hearts has a very good story and soundtrack, but the gameplay and graphics have not aged well. Oh, and just skip Shadow Hearts: From The New World, it has almost nothing to do with the first two games and is just stupid.

The protagonist Yuri is a Harmonixer who can transform into monsters and earned himself the name of "Godslayer" after actually killing (Meta-) God. He also punched Rasputin in the face and told the demon Astaroth to "shove it".

2) Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer's Call (or Nocturne): Within the first 15 minutes of this game, the world will be destroyed, Tokyo will have been inverted to an inside-out sphere with a blue light at its center, everyone except 5 other people will be dead, the souls of said dead will still roam the streets and this new, abstract world will be populated by demons. And you can recruit pretty much all the demons in battle by talking to them and haggling. And then you can fuse them to forge even stronger demonic allies. Oh, and you can make yourself stronger thanks to the demonic parasite Lucifer himself jams down your throat at the beginning. Have fun!

3) Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2: Sadly, these games do not have the demonic recruitment shtick that makes Lucifer's Call so freakin' awesome, but it does have a unique atmosphere and story. And cannibalism. Lots and lots of cannibalism.

4) And a quick summary of other potentially interesting titles:

- Grim Grimoire and Odin Sphere (if you like sprites).

- Valkyrie Profile 2 and Star Ocean: Till The End Of Time (if you like that typical "action" mechanic Tri-Ace puts in all its games).

- Jade Cocoon 2 (if you like Pokémon).

- Dragon Quest: Journey of the Cursed King (if you like very traditional JRPG gameplay and the weird visual style of Akira Toriyama).

- As for other Shin Megami Tensei titles, it looks like you already know about Persona and the only other games are the two Devil Summoner titles. Personally, I'm not a fan of Devil Summoner, but hey, maybe you'll like it.

- And then there's also Suikoden, Wild Arms, .Hack, Dark Cloud, Dark Chronicle, Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter, Drakengard, Wizardry, Arc, etc. But I'd recommend checking the other stuff out first. Oh, and I didn't mention any Final Fantasy titles because of your "non-bitchy protagonist" remark. That said, most FFs are still worth checking out, if anything, the production value always shows.

- Really good platformers! I realize that there are plenty of good platformers for the PS2, but I have enough 1st party Nintendo games. If you suggest a platformer it had better be fucking phenomenal -

1) Maximo: Ghosts To Glory and Maximo: Army of Zin: extremely decent action platformers, old school, hard as balls, but never unfairly so.

2) The entire Ratchet & Clank trilogy: platformers with shooter elements and even RPG influences. Ratchet & Clank: Gladiator (or Deadlocked in the US) is decent as well, but only if you're planning on playing co-op and multiplayer.

3) The entire Jak and Daxter trilogy: platformers with action/adventure influences. From an evergreen open world platformer without loading times to a genre-fusing epic that includes flying cars, GTA-influences, puzzles a morph-gun and a hoverboard. Oh, and the funniest sidekick in any game ever, don't skip this. You might want to check out Jak X as well if you're into car combat games.

4) The entire Sly Raccoon trilogy: platformers with stealth influences and distinct cell shaded visuals. I swear Assassin's Creed and the new Batman games have been leering at these games...

- Fighting games, this is a weird one I'll admit. If there are any classic fighting games a fan of the genre must have lay it on me -

1) Soul Calibur II & III: Probably some of the best fighting games out there. The character customization isn't as impressive as Soul Calibur IV or V, but it sure as hell has more to offer when it comes to gameplay. SC II offers the enjoyable Weapon Master Mode and SC III has the unique "Chronicles of the Sword" mode.

2) Tekken 4, 5 and Tag Tournament: It's Tekken, what more can I say?

3) Guilty Gear X and/or XX: Do you know BlazBlue? Do you know Persona 4: Arena? Well, this was the series they were working on before all that. 2D fighter mayhem.

4) Street Fighter EX3: Ok, I'm gonna be honest, this game did not age well, however, I'm still gonna mention it because of one thing: 4-player mode.

5) Mortal Kombat: Armageddon: The combat isn't nearly as fluent as in Sould Calibur, on the other hand, this games features all the combatants from all the previous Mortal Kombat games. So that's a character select menu with 60+ squares. Worth considering seeing how cheap you can get the game these days.

- Action/Adventure, there are plenty of these so feel free -

1) Okami: Probably the best Legend of Zelda game ever made - and seeing how it isn't a Legend of Zelda game, that's quite something.

2) Viewtiful Joe 1 & 2: 2D action/adventure at its finest.

3) God Hand: Old School, merciless and crazy. You know what's funny? This game, just like Okami and Viewtiful Joe, was made by Clover Studios.

4) Screw it, you know the drill: God of War, Devil May Cry, GTA, etc.

- Misc., I'll be open to anything else that's worth playing -

1) Rez: It revolutionized the rail shooter genre. The rail shooter genre. I mean, you would think something as simplistic and straightforward as a rail shooter could offer something new to the table, but by God, they did it.

2) ICO and Shadow of the Colossus: Not going to explain why, because there are probably a dozen other people who already listed these.

3) Bombastic: Ok, kind of an obscure one, but a personal favorite. It's a fun little puzzle game that revolves around dice. Now, this is also one of the few games that has a multiplayer that allows up to 5 people to play simultaneously. I can honestly say that the Bombastic multiplayer is some of the most hectic fun I've ever had.

4) TimeSplitters: Future Perfect: Yeah, it's a shooter, but they just don't make 'em like these anymore. A true classic, 4-player split-screen multiplayer, co-op story, Arcade and Challenges modes to lengthen the solo experience, a map maker, 150 playable characters, 41 weapons, good music, nice visual style, enjoyable humor and just plain fun.

5) Transformers: a game that came out before the Michael Bay films and the subsequent game-adaptions. This is a third person shooter game developed by Melbourne House. Now, I'm not exactly a fan of either third person shooters or transformers, but dammit, this one caught me buy surprise. Huge environments, quick robot/car transformations promoting guerrilla style tactics and tiny transformers you can use to customize one of your three big transfomers.

Just got back from the store and unfortunately there stock of PS2 titles had been recently devastated. The only things I managed to salvage from it was Shadow of the Colossus. Fortunately I have the internet and a few friends willing to lend me games. Keep throwing out suggestions and I may get to some of these games.

Also, for buying online: Is Amazon really the best choice for old used games? There's got to be another site out there that offers better deals. Some of their prices are kind of silly.

My one recommendation to you is God Hand
This game
My god this game
It will hurt you, think Super Meat Boy crossed with both Dark and Demon souls then mixed with a wacky script and baked at gas mark 8 in the cold flinty hard of satan himself before leaving to cool then snapping your controller in frustration
but it is so worth it
Get it, if only to say that you have played/beat it
I guess it comes under action/adventure, its a third person fighty punchy game where the enemies are designed to humiliate you and call you names etc. the goal of which being to troll the face off of anyone who plays it
its hard and you will hate it, but its worth getting

I have bought used games from gamefly and they havent steered me wrong yet. Dont take that as a glowing endorsement however, just merely the experience of one customer.
