People of The Escapist, how do you deal with anger? I ask this, because I don't know how to deal with it presently.

See, I've got a friend, one might call him "the best" of my friends and we used to talk quite in-depth and about each other's lives and now we hardly talk about anything after some fuck ups on my part, now our conversations are meaningless with him responding "yeah" "no" or "meh" to most things. Where as he'll respond in paragraphs to my sister.

I want to put my head through a brick wall and scream "fuck" so loud that it shatters glass.
Anyone know some good anger management/gone through similar?

I've had something similar with friends, and I've managed to screw up all the relationships. I don't really get angry about it though, I just try to be happy that I'm still friends with them, and do my best to make up for my screw ups.

I usually go outside and go all Lightsaber kid with a stick or something against a tree. After about 2 minutes, I'm exhausted and feel a bit silly as the neighbors stare in shock and awe.

That, or I post it on the internet.

No offence to you, sir, but I'll stick with the second of those options for now.

To clarify, I am not angry at the friend but angry about the situation. But I get where you're coming from.

When I get angry, I usually do one of three things:

1) Play violent video games and work off my frustration in the virtual world.
2) Viciously attack a pillow until my frustration is worked off.
3) Discuss whatever problem I have with a (different) friend, and see if they have any insight.

That being said, I'm a very calm person (in a recent, rather nasty fall-out with a friend, she repeatedly yelled at me for staying "logical," being an "ice queen," and the like) so it's rare that I actually get really angry. So usually the third of my options is the one I take, if I get worked up at all.

If I'm just a little upset I'll have a cigarette and calm down. If I'm really angry then I'll shout for a few minutes then have a cigarette.

I'd probably put my head through a brick wall and scream "fuck" so loud it shatters glass.

Hmm, I'm thinking of doing all three... maybe even at once!
Being icey would be nice for me, I haven't got a grip on my emotions.

Your throat must love you! Ha, ha! But I'll give that a go when everyone isn't sleeping, minus the smoking.

How did I not think of that before, good sir?

I'm like that right now. I can honestly say, you're better off just saying it's everyone else's problem and moving on. I know that sounds weird, but what this does is you externalise the anger you do get and can blast it away, instead of mulling away.

If I have the time and energy, I find an old VCR, that doesn't work, a bunch on tin cans, and a couple of cantaloupes. Then I drive down to the river delta with my friends and blow the shit out of those things with my shotgun. Yeah, it's a little redneck-ish, but nothing works better.

Or, I just go to the bar and drink. I'm actually less violent when I'm drunk.

I play guitar, actually I play more now. Mostly due to anger.
Or just sit down, close my eyes, until it subsides, its bad because it'll come back and fourth.
So guitar is my main outlet.

I actually ask around my friends if they need any help with anything.

Im part of a Christian group here on campus, and we are always trying to do some type of renovation at our service spot, so just going there and making something look better or function better, and seeing a smile and relief on my Pastor's face just makes me feel better.

EDIT: Also, it usually makes you have to think about that, than your anger.

Other than that, I like to go hang out with a couple guys, bring out the laptop, and have deep conversations while playing video games... or just joking around.

I find the yelling to be very cathartic.

It would seem somewhere in between you and I is a happy medium. I've been trying to let my emotions show a little more lately.

Same here with the drinking. Order of occurance whilst drunk: Talkative, happy, passed out.

I can imagine someone being so angry when playing guitar that you get... this:

Do you yell anything in particular (like something related to the situation) or just any old thing?

I can help you with that. Laugh when people tell jokes you like, hardly contain your anger when someone does something really bad (your body will explain the details to anyone with half a brain). Have your foot half-way in the door, let a bit leak out.

I knit, or garden, or sew, or do something that creates something. I find that the process of creating something, even if it's just cookies dough to sooth my feelings, allows me to express my feelings in a way that doesn't break any dishes or windows. It's actually suggested by therapists as well, "Art Therapy". It's frequently used for vets with PTSD because the human mind longs to 'communicate' and 'express' itself. >.> Not that I'd have any personal experiance with this at all. Also, food for thought, my husband likes listening to really angry music, like Metallica, Korn, Drowning Pool, and on and on. Music soothes the savage soul. Anyway, just my two cents, for what little they're worth.

What I normally do is I got down to the gym on my uni campus and go in to the boxing circuit. I'm usually the only one who uses it so I have it all to my self most of the time. Then I just go to town on the bag throwing punches, kicks, knees, elbows... Pretty much any kind of form of striking (I'm a mixed martial artist so I try to have a wide range of techniques). I find that after about 10 minutes of just beating on a heavy bag I feel a lot better. So that's how I get rid of the anger.
I then spend about 30 mins just working on improving my technical skills since I'm there anyway and it tends to put me in a good mood. Any kind of physical exhertion should help to relieve the stress and anger though.

Also when you're hitting the bag it helps if you have a face to put on it. I have this one bloke who keeps cock blocking me with this girl I really like that he just wants to sleep with so I usually imagine the bag's him.

During my *awkward* teen years, I would either cry or play violent video games
Now, I think why(Why am I mad? Why are they doing this? Is it the end of the world?)

Walk around my room in tight circles, having conversations with myself and saying all the things I wish I'd said/had the nerve to say.
