I was considering getting back into Magic: the Gathering with the Elspeth Duel deck (my brother's getting the Tezzeret half). I haven't played since the Time Spiral Block and there's something that I want to know about this duel deck, in the Gatherer it says that the Duel Deck set is "Miscellaneus", are these cards avalible for Standard play? The sones from 2011 are fair but what about the older ones like Abolish? I'm aware that legality doesn't matter for casual play, but I just want to know.

Well, uh, the cards are legal for play in standard, if they are legal for play in standard, so to say. What i mean by that is that if they are in a set that is standard legal, then they are, if not, then not. Being in the duel deck does not automaticaly include them in standard. So, i don't know what cards those duel decks contain, but for ex, if one contains 10 cards that were printed or reprinted 10 years ago (and never since then), 15 than were printed or reprinted 5 years ago, and 35 printed in the current set, then those last 35 will be standard legal.

As far as i know that's the rule about these special duel decks, or versus deck, or whatever other extra decks/starters they are printing.

Some of the cards will be standard legal, some won't. As long as the card is ALSO printed in a current standard legal set, it can be used.

So for example, Gold Myr, printed way back in the Mirrodin set, has been reprinted in Scars of Mirrodin. Mirrodin isn't standard, but Scars of Mirrodin is. So despite the fact that Gold Myr is in a set that is no longer in standard, it's still legal because it's also in Scars of Mirrodin, which is standard.

Basically, if you want to know if a card is standard legal or not, I find this website to be a good reference: http://magiccards.info/

Just type the name of the card in question into the search bar, and the format legalities will be shown to the right of the image.
