Well figuring that DA:O will be the same as Fallout 3, Mass Effect, or Borderlands seems to be you're first problem (don't know about KoTOR, never played any of them). I've found that in DA:O you have to work as a group not a bunch of individuals. Rogues can't take that much attention and mages die in a stiff breeze. On the other hand warriors can't survive forever without a dedicated mage healing them (unless you want to really entirely upon health potions which I've found is a bad idea). As for the enemy, take out those mages. They'll die in a couple shoots but they can ruin your entire day if you let them. They are glass cannons in the purest sense. Rogues do better when they're backstabing and warriors should be the ones gaining all the aggression (they have several abilities that increase their "threat" to the enemy).

As for your mission, try to take the darkspawn piecemeal. I think I know what area you're talking about and I believe that you're just rushing into the main area and getting your ass handed to you. If you can take out the darkspawn in groups, it becomes alot easier.

Other than that, it comes down to learning all the little details such as which talents you should take and what skills you should sink points into. I know that a badly contructed party can have a devil of a time getting through certain areas.

Jeez guys I appreciate the effort and all, but lay it down already, no need to post anymore of the same advice, I get it now. I get what I was doing wrong and am ramming any Darkspawn who crosses my path into an early grave as we speak.

As I said before, I just asked if the game was harder than the average RPG or not and whether I should have stacked up on potions.

And NO, the RPG's I named weren't the only ones I've played so far and YES, I've played Fallout 1 and 2 and YES I do know of the holy trinity as I've played my shares of MMO's as well.

Dragon Age is a lot more finicky and cheap than I was used to as well.

Wasn't uncommon for me to glance away for a second and Alistair went from maybe half or 2/3rds is suddenly dead for some reason, even late in the game when I had him in full Blood Dragon plate and almost all of the sword and shield talents. Then of course everyone else goes down right behind him.

I would recommend re starting as a mage your first go through and getting a bunch of the world ending Primal Spells and just throwing them all down at once. As long as you get the Ice one first, stuff can't really get at you very well, so you basically use your entire party as bait. It's hilarious. Also there's the frost cone spell that is 100% guaranteed to freeze anything, even dragons, for the full duration of the cooldown at minimum. That was just plain silly. Combine that with being able to use your magic stat as strength for equipping armor later(and optionally for melee damage too) on and it's pretty much just lol. I was in massive armor freely throwing about heal spells and chopping dudes in half.
