If you do not read Witches and Guards story arcs than you are doing it wrong.

Also Moist von Lipwig is also a fun one.

The guards are my favourites also, with the witches a close second. Having said that I love all of his books.

I thought he said that about the entire Watch? Can't forget about good ol' Nobby afterall.
Well he did but Nobbes is the reason it was later changed to 'jewel', he stole the other jewels.
Oh dude, that comment was just brilliant, made me actually 'lol'. You sir, win one internet:

In all honesty I'd suggest reading in the order they were written. As Pratchett himself says, they're all standalone novels in their own right, but they are in a chronological order. Events happening 3 books ago may be mentioned in later books so skipping to story arcs that don't start til a few books in, like the City Watch story arc, will leave you missing out on small chunks of story that would otherwise make the experience a lot more enjoyable as a whole.

Obviously that's just my opinion, but after reading all of his books including the Feegle offshoots at least 3 times each, that's the feel I've got from them.

The City watch books were my favorite, Night Watch is my favorite novel ever, but you'll need to read the other City watch books to "Get it" :D
I'd mostly agree with that, only that you can read Night Watch first.

Pratchett does have a weakness for keeping bad jokes going on and on in the hope they'll get funny, pontificating/preaching and showing off how clever he thinks he is, but he mostly refrains from doing that in the guards arc, especially in Night Watch.

I think Rylot has probably said most of what I would have. Despite my avatar, my City Watch arc are probably my favourites. Night Watch is actually my favourite of the books, though you'll definitely miss some references and not get quite as much out of it if you haven't read the earlier Watch books.

Ah okay. I've also picked up Night Watch, thinking it was pretty early in the City Watch series. Turns out its pretty far down the line, so I was at a loss for the first few pages. But now that its gotten rolling, it is pretty engaging in itself.
STOP READING! STOP READING! PUT THAT DOWN AND GO GET THE FIRST BOOKS OF THE ARC!
It will be so much better to get all the references.
What makes the Guard arc soo good is the evolution of the characters, especially Vimes and Carrot, from the first book. If you start with the latter books, Vimes might seem like a generic hardened cynical cop, but you'll miss how far he had come to be like this, seeing where he started from.

It's like watching Lethal Weapon 2 without watching the 1st one before. It's not the same if you don't know that Riggs was suicidal before.

I'm very fond of the Witches story arc and the Susan (Death's Granddaughter) story act. Hell even death himself, though, I havn't read Mort yet /bad scw55.

I myself havn't really gotten into any of the city watch arcs, except for Thud!. I don't know why...

Well, like I said, I just randomly picked up Night Watch hoping to jump in. But at the same time, I am going through the series chronologically, being halfway through The Light Fantastic at the moment. I now get the joke about the Orangutan.

You mean the Librarian. Read them in the order they were written and released. Whilst the stories can be read as stand alone the Discworld as a whole evolves along side the stories from each book. The Ankh Morpork of the first book (Colour Of Magic) is a very very different place to the Ankh Morpork of the last book (I Shall Wear Midnight.) The last book makes frankly an amazing call back to a character that appeared in his third book and it's stuff like that that means you really have to read them in order.
