I used to have a huge problem with getting lost.

Then I got Zan's minimap mod. Very useful waypoint system. However, if you're already lost then it's absolutely no help.

This is off topic but still about minecraft, thinking of picking up the full version, but how much does 14.95 euros convert to in usd?
I don't wanna brag, I don't wanna boast... [http://lmgtfy.com/?q=minecraft+usd]
This is amazing, I can't believe I've never seen this before ...

OT: I make huge towers with torches or lava at the top, everywhere I make a base, and I always make sure all of my bases are within view of some other base. And I always make one right next to my spawn point. So I don't get lost. Used to have the same problem you have though.

someone probably said it but when making a mine
put torches only on one side of the wall
that way too get out
follow the torches so that they are on the opposite side

Torches and signs are great, but also leave things that don't belong. Stone slab bridges, wooden stairs in mines, etc.

I make spires of stone with water coming from the top. I call them beacons, and they've served me quite well until you can make compasses, and more later to mark things of intrest.

Minecraft actually has a built-in GPS function. If you hold one of the function keys (I think it's F5) it will show you your coordinates. The spawn is always directly above the origin. Just write down the coordinates of important places on a piece of paper.

Make signals, seriously it makes it so much easier. If I'm above ground I use two cobblestone blocks and a torch so I know which direction my base is in. Even mining use dirt instead and it stands out and you know what direction to go, and it lights up the area and takes less resources than signs. Have different materials stand for different things to and make a sign telling which means which in case you forget.

Underground is a different story. When in doubt, dig up.
Not STRAIGHT up, though. Nothing like having a zombie fall into your face... or magma.

It's actually very simple.
When in an area you want to remember, hold F3 to view the co-ordinates. Write these down, or take a screenshot by pressing F2.

When you want to return to this location, hold F3 and see where you are, and try to walk so that the co-ordinates match where you last were. If you hold f3 and walk in some random directions and note the change in co-ordinates, you should be able to work out what direction to go in.

Hooray.

A little over $20.
And worth every cent.

OT: I don't get lost, because I leave markers and signs.

When it was still alpha, I'd make large lava pillars that could be seen for miles at my home base, especially if I ran off in a boat.

If your lost in a tunnel system, place redstone torches on the ground to mark where you have explored so far. DO NOT ADD TO IT WHEN GOING IN DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS. just break off the ones that lead to where you already explored and start from the next fork. KEEP the ones that lead to the outside.

Thanks for the good tips so far, and I'm realizing that I'm getting lost because my inclination to see every biome is greater than wanting to stay in my nice little tower. I just HAVE to see the nether.
If you haven't built a portal yet, here's a good technique from the Achievement Hunter guys. Thought it might help. :)

I bring a pre-made workbench, stove, and chest with me when exploring. You never know when you'll need to hunker down for a bit and make an outpost. A favorite thing to do is make super awesome diamond gear, put it in a chest and bury the chest somewhere random. I'm a twisted soul.
Don't forget a stack of unprocessed wood, just in case you run out of sticks for torches and/or pickaxes.
When I go a-wanderin', I take with me:
* A stone/iron pickaxe, axe and a couple of shovels
* A door
* plenty of lumber
* A good supply of stone

Take torches and place them every 4 or so blocks down on the left so you can find your way out. If the torches are on the left then you're going into the tunnels, if they're on the right you're going out of the tunnel. If you find a cave then place 4 torches on the floor in a square next to the exit and continue with the left hand wall system.

First bookmark this page.

Good?

You'll lose a few hours there.

Get the Telecompass mod, with it the compass changes into a usable item with which you can set a new spawn point and teleport to the spawn point (a back to the last used location)

I am stuck underground. I have found a cavern system (It's massive) That has about 3000 gold, and tons of other stuff. But I have no picks, torches, or wood.
