I love school, and I love learning, but I've found that some of the most pertinent life-lessons I've learned did not come in class. I'm talking about things you learned in the playground, the courtyard, or from your friends (or possibly even your enemies). =) They can be meaningful lessons, harsh realities of life, or just funny things that happened to you. It's all good here.

One of the lessons that stuck with me most after attending an elitist, conservative, all-girls private school, and then switching to one of the poorest schools in my area, is that rich people are bigger thieves than poor people. Seriously, my first school was so rich that the Prime Minister's daughter enrolled there, but there was an epidemic of kleptomania there. You couldn't leave your backpack or locker unattended for five minutes without one of the girls there stealing your wallet, or, in higher grades, your cell phone. However, at the school I am at now, where no one has any money, people actually respect your property, and will always pay back a favour without fail. So, the lesson there was that social class and wealth is no indicator of whether someone is trustworthy. ;)

Another thing I learned in school was how to hide shit. I'm usually well-behaved, but studying other kids was like getting free ninja lessons. I saw girls hiding earphones under their hair to listen to iPods in class. I've seen kids sneak into the bush to smoke and drink during school. And, beyond that, I learned how to hide my money so that the girls from my old school wouldn't steal my stuff. And that's just the stuff I knew about. I know kids can hide a lot worse than that as they get older. I even knew of a guy who dealt drugs at school to a friend of mine. oO And I'm a naive spoiled rich kid from the suburbs - I can't even imagine all the stuff that goes on that I'm oblivious to.

I'll think of others later, but I don't want to open my thread with a wall-o-text. So I'll throw the floor open to you here. What were some of the things you learned in school that weren't taught in class?

so basically you received free Ninja lessons and complained about it.

In all seriousness, I have learned alot of things from school. They are completely arcane/obsolete however, in comparison to doing everyday things. For starters: almost every video game I've played have taught me something.

I wasn't complaining. I thought it was awesome. I'd never be able to sneak around the way I do if I hadn't picked it up from other people in my class. =)

Places (Work, University Sports Teams, etc) don't tend to pick the most able for a job, but who fits better in socially with the already "in" crowd, that is unless you're unbelievably talented in that area, so much so, that not picking you would end up causing more trouble to the rest of the staff/team.

This never made sense to me, as I've always been a worker, but after seeing a friend of mine run circles around the other team, pass and move, and score as well as a a-team candidate, she wasn't picked for the University C-team as she didn't drink, the C-TEAM! This also happened to me at a old job, for the record the job is the best I've ever had, but very political, I've never been a huge drinker and so missed several staff nights outs, however, for this job I was in the later category, I did it so well that when opportunities came, they had no choice but to give me them, in fact, first time was only a month after starting and several people walked out the door when I wasn't given the "push" by management. Coming back 2 weeks later after the decision was over turned, even then I only carried on as I was always doing.

Also equal opportunities aren't equal if you're a white male. Yeah I know we've had centuries of being dominant, but don't say it's equal opportunities when it's clearly not.

That never worked back in high school. The teachers and staff always saw headphones hidden in girls hair. However, and to be honest it was quite odd, this one particular girl had headphones on all the time. They were so big that apparently their gravity warped light right round them. Because nobody ever took them away. They looked like this.

I seriously watch the vice principle walk right past her and take away those tiny little ear plug headphones that some other chick had on. It was so bizarre.

And people wonder why I hate rich kids. Its funny since, friends of mine that go to private schools wonder how I actually survive at my school.
Honestly, the most loyal friends I've ever had were people who couldn't afford to spare $10. And I didn't even really know the concept of theft until I was six years old and a girl in my class rummaged through my bag and stole my lunch. =(

This and this and this.

I think that this is one of the most important lessons that anyone can learn in life. Once you learn and accept this little tidbit of information, you will be able to go a lot further in life.

I learned this. I then became one of these. Then I learned that it is better in the long run to always be the best person you can.

What school did/do you go to? (Seeing as I also inhabit Sydney and know that you do because I'm a stalker)

Well I have learned that the majority of private school boys are immature little cowards who are solely reliant on the influence of their parents. I've also learned how to embarrass them in most facets of life.
Basically the message is that a good working attitude and maturity are life assets and that embarrassing people without them is just a bonus.

The girls aren't much different, although their parents were more cliquey than the kids. I've been to three schools in Australia. Not sure if I can name them without getting into trouble, but the two schools I used to go to are Ravenswood & NSGHS. I finish Glenaeon...when exams are over. ^ ^ No harm saying it since I'm not there anymore. =P

I'm not sure how it could do any harm anyway.
My sister used to go to Ravenswood and I live quite close to it. Weird.
I guess I'll just have to smash you in the Physics exam then...

I've been doing karate for a fair while now.

Always block the attacks to the head. Minor concussion is not fun, especially not the week-long headache that comes with it.

Well to be honest when I first saw the title I thought, "What's this, a new euphemism perhaps?", but you are right; The preparation school gives you for life often doesn't come from the lessons laid out in the curriculum.

And of course, don't forget that the learning doesn't stop when school does.
I like that saying about filling your bag of experience before your bag of luck runs out.

I learned that actually speaking to teachers outside of class (as if they're actually humans) really helps their attitude towards you. I now call the head of my sixthform "Dazza" and once stole his fake caveman club, bumped him with it, then was promptly chased by him pretending to be a caveman... 0_o Now that I think about it... Don't talk to your teachers.
