I couldn't really decide where to put something like this (Advice forum? Here?)
Update: Seems this has been moved to the advice forum. So, I guess that answers that then. XD
Anyway, I'll just get to the point I suppose.
Recently I started doing videos on youtube. Now I have no idea if they're any good or not, but I do know very few people watch them (Not none, but it's below 10 typically).
Recently I've been looking around trying to figure out how you get an audience. Youtube's own advice is really quite vague on the subject, so it leaves me wondering how to go about it.
So, obviously, one choice is just to spam links to your videos all over the place on any site that's vaguely relevant to the topic, but that's incredibly disrespectful, to say the least.
That being said, what else can you do that will actually get people to look at something without just rudely shoving it in their face at every opportunity?
(And yes, I do know this question can come across as a form of spam in it's own right)
Anyway, Any ideas?
Anyone know anything about how this works? Had any methods that worked for them? Or, conversely, seen (or tried) anything that was particularly obnoxious?
Really, anything you might know on the topic could help, because so far it isn't making a huge amount of sense to me...
Step 5 is buying views, but the guide is quite frank about there use, and the problems of using that method.
Generally speaking though, you're going to have to spam a bit, no matter what. Youtube weighs videos based on how popular a channel is already, so unless someone is directly searching for your videos, or the video is truly unique, you're unlikely to show up on the front page of most searches.
Whats your channel about? Some forums have space specifically for linking cool videos and user content (Particularly video games). That may be a good place to start.

It's a gaming channel. Not very creative, I know. XD
But OK then. Thanks for replying at least. I don't know if I really have the personality to even attempt spamming anything without feeling really guilty about it. Oh well...
But yeah, I have noticed how youtube rates videos...
Personally, I figure if they were trying to be nice about it they'd give some promotion to 'unknown' videos (say anything with less than 100 views). That would seem like it would help people just starting out a lot. (And after 100 views you'd probably have a lot better idea of whether anyone likes the content or not too. With 3 views or something, how do you even know? XD)
But that's just wishful thinking of course...
I've had a functioning youtube channel for four years, and the highest view count on a single video I've managed out of 173 videos is 141. I seriously don't think there's a great way to get yourself very popular unless you really put yourself out there, have great production values, and are generally likable and stuff (NONE OF WHICH APPLY TO ME ;_.
Of course, once you get a bit of popularity, things are more likely to snowball into something bigger. It's just those few initial humps that stop a lot of people. They definitely keep me from really going anywhere.
I'd say the best idea to really get some quick exposure is to do a relatively new game that's not heavily inundated with youtube footage yet. But that could potentially be a really difficult task.
Good luck with your endeavors. I do still enjoy putting up dumb videos that my stupid self thinks are funny, even if I'm not enjoying any popularity or success off of them. It's just a fun little hobby to focus on every now and then.

I have 2 older videos from long before I even thought of doing anything serious with my channel that have 1600 views between them.
It's interesting to see the contrast, and the first one especially is interesting as a contrast to my newer ones. But yeah, seems difficult doesn't it? XD
One thing I've found in discussion on youtube itself is that if nobody has watched your videos, you often can't find it in search, even using the EXACT title of your own video...
That is pretty disconcerting. I guess it all does seem to suggest you have to look outside of youtube itself for your initial audience.
~Sigh~ guess I'll have to figure out where to go with it.
(These forums essentially have the right target audience, but it doesn't seem like a good idea to try anything here. Hmm...)
Well, I guess I'll just keep trying, and see if I can find any good way to get over that initial hurdle...
Ah... Good idea. Hard to do when you don't really know anyone else that does it though. XD
Well... I say that, but I do know one...
But we don't quite get along all that well.
Also, she has a lot of connections already. (For one thing, you know that whole 'six degrees of seperation' thing? - If you follow that logic here, I'm only 2 steps away from the yogscast in the UK... Not that it's likely to be something I can do anything with...)

I'm in a similar boat to you, having not so long ago started my own YouTube channel known as the Grin Brothers, and have been wondering about ways to boost up my viewer count as well.
I've got some ideas of how I might be able to do so, and they might also apply to you as well. Of course, none of them have proven successful so far, but I believe they may bring about results overtime.
One idea I've had is to find relevant conversations wherein I can bring up my YouTube channel. Not in too blatant of a manner, but when commenting on an article about a game that I'm interested in possibly doing a blind play-through of, I will comment in said article about my interest in the idea. I don't make that the entirety of the comment, but as a small part of it that others may chance upon.
Another thing I've done, wherever possible, is for any sites I'm a member of to mention my YouTube channel on my profile page. If anyone happens to check my profile across any of the sites I'm a member of, they'll see my mention of my channel.
There is also a method to which you've demonstrated here, which is to make a forum thread asking for advice regarding your channel. It doesn't have to be strictly about how you could get views on your channel, but advice on other matters regarding your channel that you genuinely want to know (like asking others through a forum thread for their thoughts on a video of yours and tips on how you could improve). This is something I was hoping to do myself, though have myself lost on how to actually make a forum thread on this site.
Like I said, we're in a similar boat, wanting to gain YouTube views without coming across as spamming, so if you have advice yourself that might be helpful, it'd also be appreciated. On that note, your profile seems to have links to your videos, how do you do that?
Good luck with your videos! I hope you start to get more views soon.
I don't want to sound mean, but the audio quality felt poor to me, and it caused me to stop watching quickly. I am also use to higher quality/ budget channels anyways like Game grumps so that could be a reason. I mean, in general I don't understand why the sudden increase in let's play channels. I feel they should have some gimmick to differentiate them from the ocean of the others. Maybe include some of your artwork somehow into the lets play, I think it looks nice. Ill be watching it maybe on my break since i have nothing better to do, so good luck.

that's an interesting one. I'm getting some minimal success just from increasing the number of places I mention my channel's existence... So... It's slow going, but I guess it's the only way... I realised at some point for instance that my google+ profile, (which I largely ignored) actually drives some of my views because it's the most common point of entry for people that check up on me if I comment anywhere on youtube.
I'm working on improving my facebook fan page, and trying to think of what else I can do. (I also spammed some stuff on several old defunct blogs I have, though I doubt that will make much difference... XD)
I'm guessing at this point (but can't prove it) that the more of an online presence you have, and the more you can link it all together, the better things will go.)
although... Your idea mimics some of the advice in the video below somewhat, which may mean you have the right kind of idea here...

You too. Oh, and the video links in my profile are not put there by me... The Escapist has an automated system. if you go into your user profile, and select 'edit profile options' right at the bottom is a bunch of options for different social media accounts. If you enter the URL for your youtube page in the appropriate section (the one that ends user/[username])
A box will appear with your most recent 4 videos...
Obviously, you have no control over what appears there though, so keep that in mind.

Ahem. Thanks to the post above yours I'm not entirely sure who you are talking to, but since this is my thread, I'll assume for the sake of not going completely nuts that you were talking to me... (If not, feel free to say so of course, and probably ignore what I'm about to say...)
Anyway, it's perfectly valid criticism, but it's also very difficult to fix. I've been doing this for... Going on two months, and in that time I had to learn how to use video editing software, how to record audio effectively, even just how to keep talking for the duration of an entire video...
My first two videos were literally just me trying to figure out all the technical problems along the way, so I could avoid them later.
Pretty much tried every microphone and device I own capable of recording sound to get a voice track that sounded even remotely reasonable, and then of course, in some of the early videos I realised I made what is one of the biggest sins of audio production by not monitoring my audio levels correctly while recording the source footage.
The thing is, my budget is literally nothing. I can't even afford to go out and buy some cheap extra equipment (I doubt I could buy a microphone any better than the terrible ones I have lying around for instance right now), let alone serious high-end stuff. Well-established youtubers likely don't have those issues.
My focus early on has just been consistent release shedules. I'm only now getting around to graphics and other subtle touches that make the whole thing seem a lot more professional (If you compare the thumbnail of my latest video to earlier ones you might notice the huge difference - I've also changed my avatar in line with this - Though so far even all that isn't so impressive given I am recycling a single image for a lot of it.)
Why do a gaming channel? Well, I guess in some ways it's just because compared to a lot of other things it's easy.
Still, the gap between what I would like to be doing in my videos, and what I am actually doing at the moment is a big one. I mean, my channel description points out I am a catgirl gamer, and the intention of this was to establish an actual character and do a lot more with this than my existing videos do at the moment.
But without a large established body of artwork (and even doing that is effectively taking the easy way out), this concept falls a little flat.
And ideally I'd want to be doing fully animated anime style segments, but there is no way I could realistically do that even on the weekly schedule I'm currently on...
(Or alternately, Have CGI rig of the character to work with... My goal is to have it be at least somewhat believable that it is the character doing stuff on youtube, not the person behind the character... XD)
Anyway, I guess at the moment I'm focusing on very basic aspects of the channel, and hoping I can improve my workflow and equipment as I get more experience, (and more funds to work with... Seriously, top of my list right now would be a HDMI recorder of some kind, because recording composite video, even of something like Mario 2 looks awful, but recording a HD console in SD would be much worse. Not to mention sort out an actual way of recording PC footage...)
Anyway, I suppose that just sounds like a long list of complaints, but it's the reality of what it's like trying to do this right now... When you're already successful, you can afford to have high production values... When you're not, you have to do your best to make it LOOK like you do, but there's only so much you can do with poor equipment...
Hope that gives some insight, even if it doesn't sound particularly optimistic...
Of course, if you were talking Sould1n instead, never mind... XD
