Being one of the 5 people on this site who actually enjoy using GFWL I thought I'd bring news to you of a Microsoft press release detailing a revamping of GFWL.

It can be read here: http://www.microsoft.com/games/en-us/press.aspx

It's basically the normal stuff about streamlining the client, bringing in more games, expanding the download library and offering many more discounts.

I'm quite looking forward to this revamp and I'd like to see the new look.

Thoughts? Discussions? Loudly dismissing every other form of PC gaming for Steam?

So, similar the same as the revamp that brought us Games on Demand (and still utterly failed).

Don't get me wrong, I want Steamworks to get some competition, but it seems that GfWL's intent to become the poor man's Gamersgate. Pull the plug already, MS!

Isn't this the 2nd or 3rd time it promised a revamp? The only GFWL game I ever got was Fallout 3, and it combined with GFWL was so buggy that it was impossible to even play (I had the "Every time you start a new game it crashes" bug...before I started playing.) I just don't think it's ever going to take off due to it's bad start no matter how good it gets.

I use it for Street Fighter IV. That's it. Steam is superior in almost every way in my opinion, except for fighting games, where GFWL actually does well.

I'm not sure why some people hate GFWL so much though...

Well here's my reason:

It made Fallout 3 more unstable then it already was. It stuttered, crashed, was choppy, and just not a very good experience. When I got the mod that removed GFWL, all those problems basically stopped. There were less crashes, no more stuttering/choppiness, and the experience improved.

So GFWL makes the games I want to play worse. So I try not to use it, at all. If I do, I try to buy games that have a mod to remove it, like Fallout 3. Hopefully this revamp turns it into not a piece of crap, but we'll see what happens. This is MS, so I don't exactly expect complete success.

Article from Joystiq [http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/22/games-for-windows-marketplace-gets-competitive-relaunching-nov-15/] containing mock-ups of the new design. Did anyone say "Steam clone [http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/10/spartancatalog-4.jpg]"?

Nothing can make me like GFWL. Not even if they start giving away all of the games for free. I would take the games, but I would still hate GFWL. MS started GFWL with an intention to make PC gamers pay to play online like you do with Xbox. I have no doubt that that's what they still want to do. Let's not give them a chance.

I just don't understand why I get a Steam game and it uses GFWL. I can understand if you buy a CD/DVD version of the game, and it wants Steam or GFWL but when you buy a game on one or the other... wtf?

Anyway... I've only had mild frustration with GFWL nothing terribly game breaking (although it was rather convoluted in trying to download the expansion for Fallout 3)

the next expansion for it ditches games for windows live since no one likes it

except I guess the guy who started this thread

originally the game used steam for drm and gfwl as a matchmaking service but the gfwl matchmaking sucked and steams match making has gotten better so the next expansion will just use steam match making

+1 to the list of products Microsoft has now shamelessly cloned.

Well done Bill! Now how about an original idea?
