If it doesn't sting, or bite, or spit acid, it's sheer size doesn't bother me...

Unless it's a spider, because FUCK SPIDERS!

Good lord, look at those mandibles! I don't know if they're aggressive or not, but it sure looks like it can deliver one hell of a bite.
Apparently, male Dobsonfly's have such poor leverage on their pincers that the bigger they are, the less likely they are to be able to inflict damage. Even smaller males are incapable of breaking human skin.

Watch out for those females though.

Doesn't seem functional enough to be scary.
The jaws are big but with those comically short legs it still just looks silly.

I'd be a little scared just because it looks stupid enough to hit me while flying and big and sharp enough to accidentally do damage.

It's like some insane individual mashed a beetle's head on a mutated butterfly.
*sigh* should not have clicked it but my curious side couldn't help it.

I'm gonna be a special snowflake and say I don't find it that scary or ugly looking at all, about its only "intimidating" features is its pincers but I don't find those off putting.

Really the size is the main problem but otherwise whilst not a good looking insect per say, don't find it particularly threatening and would be much more scared of a small spider.

Its perfection is matched only by its hostil... oh wait, it's not that aggressive. Oh well.

That said, I think I would certainly be legging it if I saw one coming at me. Someone pass me a can of Raid, or at least a rolled up newspaper.

That insect doesn't look like it could even hurt a human: The jaws on it are way too large and cumbersome. Unfortunately, dobsonflies DO have one of the foulest smelling "skunk" sprays of the insect world so... yeah don't scare one while it's in your hand or you'll be sorry in ways you never imagined. =p

Im calling fake.

We know everything there is to know about the world and we knew it all 50 years ago. We understand eco systems, the climate, evolution and we have identified everything everywhere. The world had nothing left to surprise us with the day we invented television. Therefore this must be fake because we have nothing left to learn, just ask Al Gore.

As a proud Australian, I find it amusing that people think bugs like this are 'monstrous' or the like. I can't ever remember a 'small' bug or insect. I mean, even our cockroaches here can get up-to large lengths and fly. Yes. The cockroaches. Spiders on the other hand, well. 95% of the 'big' ones have non-lethal bites. It's the ones we don't see that kill people.

China is just behind Australia in places I want to go where the wildlife is scary as hell!
Not far behind I imagine is Japan, where they have killer hornets the size of your thumb that attack in swarms and have stings that cause tissue destruction worse than a black widow bite. 70 to 150 people die every year from these things! They are now terrorizing China.
Yeah now if you were describing a hornet that size I would probably s**t my chair on the spot. My brain would send an immediate evacuation signal to my bowels!

For some real insect based nightmare fuel: why I will never go to Japan unless I can bring with me or purchase immediately upon landing a flamethrower

Yeah I think my horrific scary bug wins!

My first thought was of how much it looks like a scrin PAC from C&C 3, especially the head.

I don't get nightmares but yeah it's not exactly something I'd wanna run in to in real life.
In that picture though it looks kinda funny, like it's holding it's arms up in the air going "Wooo!".

Um, I don't beleive that's real for a minute. It looks way too nose heavy for it to be aerodynamic. But then again, I have a healthy mistrust of any story that starts with "in China" or "a man in China." If this turns out to be a hoax, I totally called it.
