some friends of mine are making a RPG game on the half life engine

their basic Gimmik is that when you die you don't come back to life. your next of kin (brother/sister) continues the adveture for you. when you level up you pass your quest on to the next generation and the have been training for this all their life which is why their better than you.

just wondering if any one has an opinion/ Gimmik or idea of thier own.

Ok that is an excellent sounding idea, but it might be destroyed by the mystical quick save key, just so you know. Unfortunately i have no gimmick ideas for an RPG, pity.

How's this?:

Your player character is encased in a suit of armor which feeds off you. Being the evil suit
that it is, healing items and the like don't have any effect. In order to fuel both your spells and to regenerate health, you need to kill. Enemies, friends, bystanders, it doesn't matter.

This kind of game mechanic forces players to be more aggressive in their approach to rpgs and forces a moral quandary wherein if you are unable to find enemies to kill and the suit is about to suck you dry, you must decide between gambling on finding a foe to kill or just murdering an innocent to save your own skin.

How about one where you drink a poison and spit it in someone's face, you then proceed to watch a cinematic of that face melting for five minutes, you cannot skip it and it keeps track of whether or not you're there through Natal.

An awesome idea is where you basically can transfer your soul into a villain's body right before you die to keep you alive. And you'll get a game over if you do it too late.

Obviously you can't do that to bosses, unless they're very weak.

How about ridiculously expensive armour for your horse that does nothing in-game and is paid by using real-world money but it wears down in the game! Then the players will be forced to spend more of their real-world money on something fictional and completely pointless!

Aren't I a genius?

(I'm talking about Oblivion for those that don't know)
But he looks so sharply dressed!
