Celery tastes like water ...

So you think gin tastes like water?

I'm a vodka fan myself but I normally don't assign gender associations to inanimate alcohols.

Keep in mind I enjoy vodka the most when it's in a tasty white russian, I also enjoy fruity drinks with umbrellas in them, and being a 'manly man' means nothing to me, nor should it to anyone, really.

gin is only second to scotch in terms of manliness.
Nah the drinks order of "manliness" goes something like:

Whiskey
Vodka
Tequila
Beer
Gin
Brandy
Wine
MLP;FiM
Sherry
I don't know about you but them pony drinks seem like they could knock people on their ass, I have a chart and everything.

By your definition ponies are about as manly as Vodka, and that sir is quite manly.

Hmmm. In America gin and tonic is considered a "classy" drink to the lower and middle classes. Of course, the upper-middle class and nouveau riche know the truly "classy" drink is a good scotch and water. That's clearly all nonsense and the actual "old money"/upper class just drink whatever they feel like. I think the idea that gin is a "classy" drink probably came from the prominence of gin in England. And to ears of many Americans someone speaking with an English accent automatically=class. Snoop Dog reportedly likes gin as well.

My guess about the Scotsmen is that they consider gin to be the drink of the English and every good Scotsman knows that the English are a load of yellow-bellied pansies.

But if you're in America, gin is just a poor man's aged scotch. And scotch is a poor man's way to try to buy class.

Beer = Manly
Whiskey = Super manly
Martini = Opposite of Whiskey
Gin = Can't say(never seen anyone drink it) but probably infinitely more manly than a martini

gin is actually quite hardcore i can't drink it.

i'll stick to my rum.

however (possibly for this very reason) it is also synonymous with middle aged
housewifes wearing too much make-up and crying, sat in a flight of stairs.
This is what springs to mind when I think of Gin also. That and how horrible it tastes.

That's how it should look. Gin should be considered more manly tho, hell any drink hat has a histroy of making ppl insane should have a better rating, just don't know anyone that drinks it.

So I'm in Taiwan for a bit of work and I've been hanging out with some Scottish visitors. At some point, we started talking about preferred drinks with most of them voting for some mix of vodka. My immediate reaction to the word "Vodka" was blatant disgust and then I told them that I prefer Gin and Tonic or just straight Gin if I was having a bad day.

They told me two things about my preferred alcohol. 1) Gin is a rich/cultured man's liquor 2) Gin is also a girly man's liquor.

Is this a scottish mentality or is Gin generally looked at this way? What are your thoughts on the possible girliness of gin?
The guys i work w/ building roads would totally disagree. in no way is this a bit rasicist, me? white guy who drank gin and tonics his whole life..lol i blame douglas adams, but not really, i just loved his books.......and i'm one of 2 white guys of a crew of 14 guys, other are black....and for fuck sake if someone made that statement around them they'd get their ass kicked....what can i say, i'm surrounded by people who like gin, lol and knives

Wondering if something is or isn't manly, in and of itself, is not manly. Manly men don't think about that kind of crap, it is beneath them.

Gin and Tonic is delicious! So no in my opinion Gin is not girly. I think as long as it gets you drunk and you enjoy the taste of what you are drinking then WOOHOO PARTY!! I ascribe to the thought of "I'll do what I want. You do what you want and everyone is happy!" works well for me in these kind of situations.

Whaaaaa?? Not true at all. Coming from a bartender/regular drinker, I can tell you that Vodka is at the very bottom. Vodka is meant to be tasteless and mixes with ANYTHING, therefor, not very manly. Tequila is, straight up (no pun intended), a shot that girls drink. Gin is much more "manly" than either of the two. Also, some digestives will knock your taste buds into tomorrow and leave you with a strong burn. What about grappa? What about rum (not manly)? Also, sherry's a wine.

Gin and tonic is sometimes perceived as a girly drink, but frankly I know a lot of guys, myself included, who drink it. Gin alone, no way, although scotch would probably earn you more favour among the Scots :)

Personally, I find most designations of "girly" drinks silly. I get it if it's some kind of pink drink or something, but Bailey's and other liqueurs being girly? Fuck off, I'm drinking it anyway, tastes good, has a kick, what do I give a shit.

Gin is girly, alcohol content doesn't determine the manliness of a drink.

I personally don't care for straight gin, I prefer rum, vodka or whiskey straight. I have noticed that, for some reasons, many homosexuals I know like gin. Perhaps I'm reading too much into it.

My reaction when I saw the title: "Says who?!"
My reaction once I read the OP: "A Scotsman said it? Damn it if he isn't probably right."

OT: I don't drink but, going off my friends who do: if it gets you plowed it gets you plowed, manliness be damned.

Gin is nothing more than Vodka that's been given a purpose. And, if a Gin and Tonic is girly, I'll laugh when whoever said that dies of malaria. For those who don't know, Gin is a grain alcohol that, at a certain stage, is literally Vodka. The addition of botanical flavors (they vary but Juniper is the most common) provides a delightful undertone to the drink.

The secret, for those who care, to having a good gin drink goes something like this:

Rules of Gin:
It must be served cold (the colder the better)
If the alcohol has an intense burn, it needs to be diluted
When mixing, use anything sweet with caution (there are exceptions but this is a pretty good rule)
Best flavor pairings with Gin: sour and bitter.
Avoid, at all costs, fruit drink + gin as the result tastes unsettlingly like rotten fruit.
Unlike Vodka, there is often a distinct difference between brands of Gin. For example, my favorite Gin (Hendrick's) has a distinct flavor of cucumber while another brand uses a particular type of flower. Most Gin is flavored with Juniper, a taste similar to how fresh fir trees smell.

Unlike other types of alcohol, Gin doesn't need aging and thus even the incredibly high end options are relatively cheap. There are, of course, a few brands that release wood barrel aged Gin and the result is interesting to say the least.

And, for the record, Gin is my drink of choice. But, for those who might not care for it I suggest trying a Spiced Rum + mountain dew (mixed at about 1:4). It is shockingly delicious and a perfect drink if your goal is to get drunk. I generally see Gin as more of a relaxing with friends sort of drink (or just relaxing in general).

I drink gin and tonic when I'm at a bar. But then, I also wear a suit at bars. No-one has called me a girly man so far.

I think it's pretty silly to rate liquors in terms of supposed manliness, especially since they're all basically the same shit. Gin - botanicals = vodka. Vodka + barrel aging = whisky. Rum, rye, tequila, whatever, it's all just ethanol and flavourful impurities. So what's manlier; a sugar cane, a barley stalk, or a cactus? (Trick question--the blue agave is not a cactus.)

The public perception is what lumps specific types of people together with specific drinks. Like any stereotype, there might be some truth to it; but there's also probably a lot of aversions and exceptions out there.

That said... I couldn't tell you why this is, but the only folks I know who drink gin are women. Make of that what you will. And drink what you like!

Are you serious? Gin, a rich, cultured liquor? Maybe it's just me being too interested in history, but I'll forever associate gin with the the low class of 18th century England.

Gin Craze, anyone? [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gin_Craze]
