The problem with the whole girl gamer thing is that in our culture there is a serious problem rooted deep that often stays in the dark. The problem? Many "gamers" think that girls/women don't/should not play games.

This mentality is what leads to some people worshipping attractive gamer girls, and some female gamers receiving shitty treatment.

From my humble experience, girls who play games either don't tell anybody unless they just "happen to find out" or they'll boast it for attention.

Just like there are girls who are humble about their looks, and there are some that act like whores.

Should they do it? Hell, I don't know. But what I do know is that they're looking for attention, and I personally don't like attention whores. But that's just my take.

EDIT: I should include that yes, a girl gamer is much more attractive than one who isn't. But the above comment still applies to this.

And as a side note, (from what I've heard) the girls that really want to fit into the gamer community never end up being able to like a guy could because of their gender.

And you know what? That really pisses me off. I keep hearing about girls getting harassed on Xbox Live and steam from the first inkling that they might have boobs. It's seriously annoying considering I do know someone that likes to play console games but can't play online and socialize with other people due to their gender. It's really sad, and really immature.

I think ur right in some parts and wrong in others. And it all depends on the attitude.
Im a girl and i have been a gamer...well since super mario bros. Gamer/geek comunity is my way of living tho i often point out i am in fact a gal so i dont get called -dude- but beyond that i dont have any other interest in pointing it out.

Also, as i said its about the attitude, my gamer friends while talking with me often forget im a girl and we talk freely about strategies, etc. As well as in mmos i get respect from the servers based on my skills and not about my gender. Tho there has been some gossips that -some guy- helped me out to get to where i was by -cam-cyber paying- and not by my own skills; which is sad and they soon find out its wrong by a nice -player been killed by me-

Yet normally that goes into the category of ppl trying to get an explanation of -why that girl is better than me a dude- and the come up with retarded sexual gossips.
But i deem it normal, since in a competition enviroment the enemies will always come up with something to justify their failure be male or female.

Yet, if a girl is a real gamer, she knows how to be respected by her skills and not her boobs and trash all the sexual comments. :p

Has anyone else ever noticed how many girls lately seem to think they're a "special snowflake" just because they play video games? It's really prevalent on Facebook especially. Statuses like "Yes I'm a girl, and yes I play video games <3". Or "lol I'm such a nerd, playin COD text ittt." Seriously, do they expect guys to just jump all over them like the fact that they play video games makes them hot suddenly? I'm not a guy though, so I guess that's why I'm posting this. Thoughts?
it's because most girls who are gamers aren't particularly attractive, while the ones who say "Yes I'm a girl, and yes I play video games <3" tend to either be attractive or belong to a "clique" where it's generally thought of as uncool to play games.

EDIT: and yes, those girls DO deserve special recognition.
Only at the begining since it doesnt match up to go buy cloths and shoes and then see a game shop with sparkling eyes and dont go in because u are with ur friends shopping cloths and shoes.

But then i take took the hold of the situation and hahaha -came out of the gamer closet- told my friends WE HAVE to MAKE a STOP at the gameshop and since i get all hype about this game or the other they just think it cute...lol

Maybe some of us are special snowflakes. Just sayin'.

Also, this tends to stop when people stop being teenagers.

I think its an attention deficit issue. You still have guys who are "OMG! yer a girl and you are playing video games!!!!".
This is true. I run into guys on xbox live who instantly send me friend requests and start hitting on me. It's pretty ridiculous haha.

stop using a Mic if there is a serious lack of LULZ, pick up a voice changer and play it dead-pan.

OT: There are two types of Gamer Girls:

The Gamer GURRRL: the one that flaunts the fact that she is a girl for attention [usually] and only happens to play Games of the Month.

Then there is the "Gamer" Girl: the ones who do in fact enjoy playing games, probably have played a D&D Campaign or even DM'ed one, these ones are Gamers, who just happen to be Girls.

Also, to other guys out there, "Gamer" girls exist, but learn to start liking Brown or Brunette hair and glasses.

/generalizations

There is also a brand of gamers that are girls and have good taste in clothing if thats what ur pointing out. And those, like myself, happen to be graphic designers by career, so everything that has aesthetic, meaning -awsome graphics-, pulls us and games just target that.

Totally off topic but Lol I totally splurted my cola everywhere at that comment. xD
I can't take credit for that one. A gay guy I knew used to say that all the time. Though believe me, he means it in a VERY different sense than I do, if you catch my drift. It does make your use of the word "splurted" kinda... XD

The prettier gender doesn't differ that much from us guys when playing games, exept by the numbers. It's often considired that men and women have entirelly different tastes in gaming, could be then again there are those of same taste, but that may be for different reasons or for the same.

And both genders are occasionally just as sore losers and eager to taunt.

Something that is worrying me about this thread is the fact that most people seem to think that if you advertise the fact that you like games that makes you a gamer gurrl.

What if you genuinely like games?
the best messages i get now off men are the ones that accuse me of hackin my gamerscore, just becoz its over 100k...guys are priceless lol
In fairness, 100k is a lot of gamerscore, like about 90 times what I have ever seen anyone have.

Those sort of status' are annoying.

I am a Female and a lot of my Facebook status' are about games, but that's because I want my gamer friends to respond and talk to, not for attention of, "AMGZZ GAMERZZ" and it's the kinda crap that would get insta locked on a site like this for being non-thread worthy.

I still find it a wonder that people actually manage to find out the gender of other players.
I don't get the whole 13 year olds screaming on Xbox live. I had both my PC (mobo getting accidentally grounded) and PS3 die so I've been stuck gaming solely on my 360 and playing Gears 3 and a few other games on live I've heard maybe like 4 people max in the last 2 weeks.
Seriously from my experience damn near no one is using their mics to talk on live.
I know, right? I've had Xbox live for years and I'm pretty sure no one other than people on my friends list knows I'm a girl. And no one who does know has ever hit on me (probably cause I'm a total *****).
And everyone is too scared to put on the mic because they think they'll get screamed at by teenagers.

OT: I sense some over-exaggerating... but then again I have no idea what happens on face book.

I found out that in the UK female gamers that are real (girls who actually enjoy games and not attention-whores/ creepy men) only come on after midnight... they also hunt in packs of up to 4 and are almost always general rank +.

I completely agree, I think it is cool that more girls are accepting games as something worthwhile but I find it annoying that they think they are so special, they are just trying to get attention. I imagine this must be INFURIATING to long time girl gamers, let me just say, from my experience, most of us gaming dudes can tell the difference between attention seeking girl gamers and the real deal.

Ahh see, what takes the cake for me with this whole "girl gamer syndrome" thing is girls who play like 1-5 games religiously like KH1 and 2 and the whole Final Fantasy world and then they continue to say "HELLS YEAH.I'm a girl whos a gamer what up boys!" and then you ask if they play any other games on PC or something, like Dead Space or if they played Skyrim or these types of thing and then say "pfft no they are lame games" (i get this a lot around where i live... don't know if anyone else has had it happen).

I just truly avoid women who constantly make themselves sound like a princess on games =/
I personally just avoid my mic being on so i dont get the whole "oh woah wut, a female!?" and just continue on my merry way through what ever i am playing ^^
Although I'm finding it interesting to read so many comments on this topic ^^
But also... i wouldn't call myself a "girl gamer", i would just say "gamer" =/ girl gamer sounds stupid and pretentious

Generally, the girls who do this (and I use the term "girls" instead of "women" deliberately) are usually insecure and seeking attention from boys (again, "boys" instead of "men" being deliberate) who are themselves desperate for attention from girls.

As Morgan Freeman(I believe it was him?) said in an interview about black history month: it will never end until we stop talking about it and treating it like its an issue. Black people don't need a special month and women don't need to be a legitimized sect of gamers, everyone just needs to shut up about it.
Actually, I disagree with Freeman's assessment regarding black history month. I believe it serves a very real and tangible purpose still, and purporting that it simply reinforces racial conflict (like Freeman does) is, in my humble view, a bit silly. Racism persists because people are allowed to cling to their prejudices unchallenged. Not because one month each year is spent in remembrance of what that prejudice has previously wrought.
But yes, it is true that women do not need to be 'legitimised gamers'. That's why people should get off their backs and leave them to their individual ways of expressing their interest.
His point is that there is no difference but that which we create. And as long as we segregate for good or for bad, we are still segregating. And we will still think of each-other as separate races instead of human beings who happen to be black and human beings who happen to be white; just like we have people who happen to be blonde and those who happen to be brunettes.

Think of it like this black history month is a ladder for which we can get higher up the mountain of racism. It's a fine start, but no one climbs a mountain by stacking ladders on top of ladders and eventually we have to ditch that idea and start free climbing our way up or we will stagnate that progress and forever be locked into the idea that groups of people are arbitrarily different based on something as insipid as color.

My point that I'm hoping most people got being that as long as we act like women are different and don't necessarily belong in videogames, they will continue to be so.

I find the "special snowflakes" almost as irritating as girls who feel the need to post a thread about how superior they are because they don't feel the need to announce to the world that they play games.

Then again, I find just about everyone who makes a claim of "I AM TEH NERDZ CUZ I PLAY TEH GAMEZ!" rather irritating.

Wow. Way to showcase your astounding intelligence with such a sweeping generalisation. Are you going to make me ask for the factual evidence behind that claim, or shall I spare you the embarrassment? Jesus Christ.

OT: It's a fad, from where I'm standing. Declaring that you're a grrl who <3's COD lolol fits in very nicely with the whole geek chic culture that's been proving itself popular recently. There's always going to be attention whores, but this'll *probably* be a moot point in a few years' time -- either it won't be trendy anymore, or gaming as a whole will have become more mainstream anyway.

I see the point about the special treatment and discrimination in general, though, amongst the more desperate/stupid guys. The ones that reply with "get back in the kitchen" and "tits or GTFO" are either twelve years old or immature man-children, and either way, I'm convinced that the main reason they often respond so is because they genuinely have no idea how else to react to a gamer who also happens to be female. It's quite sad, really, in a "but I still don't feel very sorry for them because they're still assholes" kind of way.
