I agree, there are a lot of unrealistic body types out there for women. However lately there has been a trend of more realistic body types. Someone mentioned BioWare, though their early games had women with massive boobs (see KOTOR1) their latest game Mass Effect was more realistic in terms of body shape. However there was a ton seen in sexual situations, like in a Gentlemen's Club. If you ask me, is it too much to ask for a Ladies club with dancing half-naked, hot alien men? (massive hint to BioWare). A better example out there was a game named WET with a very average looking woman covered in tattoos, but that's been put on hold for unknown reasons. Then there is this first person game I saw demoed that had an average looking Asian woman lead, who was jumping around rooftops.
I think the larger issue is in the case of who's the protagonist of the game. There are more male leads so when male players play the game, they relate to the character better. So perhaps if there were more female leads it would bring about more female players who could relate to the character better, or in the case of today with the large number of female game players, get us to stop bitching about it.
Not to mention, there seems to be a huge lacking in female video game designers to give their imaginative input on the female side of things. I mean, how can you expect a group of men to create very many realistic women characters?
