I have to say, I think we've a way to go, but with characters such as Half Life's Alyx being so popular, we're headed in the right direction, and also, there's a place for stupidly over the top characters still in both directions.

yes, I agree, having to deal with the perpetually silent Dr. Freeman for 2 and a half games, Alyx Vance deserves some major kudos, and Freeman, well for all his experience in science, the dude needs to learn to talk to women...or men...or vortigaunts for that matter.

Ok my Girl Gamer's opinion: You're overreacting a little. Maybe you've just been in some crummy areas. I can't say I've ever felt disrespected in a game or game discussion because of my gender. Yeah a lot of female game characters are exaggerated physically and/or scantily clad, but I'd say it's far from the majority where this is extreme enough to merit taking offense. The majority seem to me to be kind of fantastical women because that's more interesting. It's a game, everything is supposed to be a little out there.

It's spelled exaggerated.

Download and use Firefox.

It has a spellchecker :]

I do have firefox, but I screwed up the spelling of the word so horribly!
Look at these suggestions, lol [http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb274/okinweginwh/sadness.jpg?t=1223514050]

Why should anyone accept developers and publishers pandering to the pathetic and juvenile tastes of lonely 12-36 year old males?
For someone who is so against stereotypes, you sure had no problem stereotyping 12-36 year old males there.
He didn't. The firms generally accept that the average gamer is a male betweem 12 and 36. They make games to pander for the lower end of that, hence the "OMIGOSH BEWBS". It's the industrys stereotype not his.

It's a stereotype nonetheless, you have to see the irony in saying that 'Girl Gamers' are stereotyped in games yet stereotyping the very people that play them because, OMG, not everyone is a 12-36 year male gamer. It's not okay to generalize "girl gamers" yet it's perfectly fine to stereotype the people that play them? As some people in this thread would say "that's not fair!"

I know. But I think he was talking from a publishers standpoint. We all know girls play games, but the publishers don't recognise them as a demographic. Or at least that's how it seems to me.

How is it ironic to want the industry to stop blindly stereotyping both male (in terms of who they are marketing to) and female gamers (in terms of what they're marketing)?
It wasn't the industry I was refering to, it was you yourself.

You've been on this thread, women are generally stereotyped by video games with you defending women being stereotyped, and then you yourself generalized the people that played the games;

"Why should anyone accept developers and publishers pandering to the pathetic and juvenile tastes of lonely 12-36 year old males?"

I understand it was probably just for humourous irony or something, but the way you put it just made it seem hipocritical and ironic.

Guess what? It's up to the people who make the games as to what is in them, not the customers. How would you like it if you wrote a book or a song or something and people told you you couldn't have certain characters or story lines or lyrics because some potential customers might not like them? Would you bow to their wishes or tell them where to go?

If you want a game with a lead female character that meets your criteria of what a girl should look like, then make your own game. As long as games sell well the way they are, why should you expect them to change? About all you can do as a gamer is not buy the games that offend you. Rent them at places like gamefly.com or blockbuster first and then don't buy them if you don't like them.

There are a lot more girls playing and making games than ever before. I've been playing games since the late 1970's and let me tell you that there are so many more games aimed at female players in the last 10 to 15 years than I can ever remember seeing before. Find the ones that do look like they might please you and buy those. The more games like those sell, the more encouraged game publishers will be to make more games geared towards females.

I hate survival horror games and games about raising pets myself, but you don't see me griping about them. I simply don't buy them.

Girls in marketing really works you only need to look at the number of replies in this topic to see that.

This topic should have been called Groundhog day since it's doomed to repeat itself for all eternity.

And Ivy's outfit is atrocious. Just really un-sexy.
And since all the men in that game are massive anyway, I'm not seeing how her characterisation is sexist. It's merely an exaggeration of the human form in both sexes here.

Woah woah woah you say all this as if no other media genre is guilty of that exploiting woman shit *cough* hollywood *cough*, videogames just inevitably take it one step further because it's fantasy escapist stuff after all as retarded as it looks sometimes "ohaiyo! ^_^" *jiggle jiggle* and all that shit.

Also FYI 'Alex Vance' has won a bunch of recent best female in a game polls and she's anything BUT a bimbo. What gaming companies think we like and actually like arn't the same things it seems...
