Girl Gamers - the final discussion

What ive noticed is, like all sports/entertainment, they are some girls in it just to attract some guys.

But ive noticed that "oh look at me, im a girl gamer" is the new "girls arent allowed".
They cant out loud just say "girls suck, youre not allowed" so what they say is "look at the girl, shes all like, im so special, i play games." even though she said nothing of the sort, shes just playing the fucking game.

OT: MY general experience say that girls suck at gaming.

That said, gaming has little need of extreme physical strength than some other stuff (some sports for example) and so, girls SHOULD be able to be more or less equal.

That said, there ARE differences in brains between genders. Without claiming to be a scientist, I seem to think that boys in general have a better spatial understanding than girls for example. And while I cant quite remember what spatial means I think it was about space/3D understanding? Difficult to explain this when I'm not writing in my mothertongue

There are certainly areas the "girlbrain" is better in as well.

That said, it is not very hard to imagine that games cater to certain "intelligences", and neither is it hard to imagine that since games are often made by and for men/boys, they will cater to these. And as such, boys will naturally (in general) be "better" gamers.

no one should care about a gamer simply because of their gender. (the majority of folks here seem to be on the trolley)

Once I was pwned in Quake Live deathmatch by a girl.
Sure,if they play enough they can get high skills.
Regarding gender,the only difference I spot between female and male gamers is that females mostly tend to play more "casual" games than "core" games.
Most of the people that I know that play Zynga games on Facebook are women,while most of the people I meet at fps deathmatches are men.
Anyway,if they like it,let them play it.
I generally thing that variety is something good,and that also implies at gaming.
The more the females start playing core games the better.

I've never actually met a good girl gamer. I've met ok girl gamers, and it's not because they didn't play much, they played loads they just weren't good at it. This fact however, was nothing to do with their gender, it's just that the sample group that I have met has far too few girl gamers, and plenty of guy gamers.

I do infact know alot of girl-gamers. Both my sisters game, two of my female friends are educating themselves into game-developers, and maybe 70% of the women I know play games in some capacity.
So yeah...
Fully aware of the existance of good female gamers.

In my social set, there are a whole lot of women I love and respect - sadly none play video games. The same is true for the guys - no gamers. I'm bloody alone. If anyone should be pitied, it's me. The closest I come to gaming with "girls" is making female RPG characters! I have a lovely red-headed Hawke in DAII :-D Ah well - not so bad then, eh?!

Well actually in theory with Biological dispotion(Women better at multitasking, Men better 3d spatial awareness and more risky) one sex should have a better natural ability in certain genres. Girls should in theory trump guys in RTS and MMORPGs games while guys should in theory be better at FPS and other twitch type games. Although since not everyone conforms to average as it is only an average you can't say this is a definite case. Yes there are other factors I just wanted to point out the ignored biological traits.

OT: I have no problems with girl gamers. It is those that need to be "girl gamers" that bother me. I thought we were all just gamers. If someones gamer tag or clan tag mentions their gender the first thought that comes into my head is "attention whore". I am usually proven right. She is usually the mouthy one in a party of male gamers with the worst score.

Why allude to your having tits in your gamer tag? It tends to be some teenage girl who comes on to the server for attention. The one needing to feel special online because daddy won't buy her a pony and the football players won't look at her in real life. This doesn't tend to be the case as often when you only find out they are female from mic chatter.

My experience is that women are not as good at gaming. It is a practice thing I guess. I can't remember seinge a girl with the best K ratio or top of the score boards. I've never been beaten on Streetfighter/MVC2/Tekken/etc by a girl and all the top Streetfighter players etc. are male.

Having said that, it could be that "133t_Tb49937" who never switches his mic on is secretly a girl. You would not get good odds in the bookies on that though.

So guys who have gamertags like 'AwesomeDude344', 'KillerGuy69', 'SexyRepairMan' or any other name using any sort of masculine term is flaunting his gender in everybody's face?

The fact of the matter is, there's a prejudice amongst gamers. Us guys are free to express ourselves as men through video games as much as we want, but as soon as a girl so much as tries to talk on a headset, she gets harassed.
Its not exactly fair that girls have to hide their gender from the rest of the gaming community. How would you feel if you had to pretend to be a woman in order to play CoD without being teased, insulted, hit upon, and called (as you say) an attention whore?

Let's face it, the gaming community has several big flaws regarding the fairer sex that seriously need fixing.

Also, I have several female gamer friends who would gladly kick your ass ten times over in Halo, if that's what it takes to make you believe that girls are just as good as guys at video games. My best friend's girlfriend isn't even a hardcore gamer, and she is amazing when it comes to Metal Gear Solid, and another friends ex once made it to the final round of a hardcore Tekken tournament and she had never even played the game before.

My wife plays games. But she's pretty bad and I'm not sure why.

We both started playing this game called LOL or League of Legends and she's just terrible. We started off playing together (so we both played the same amount of time) but for some reason I got better and she didn't.

I don't think this thread educates anyone any better on what gamer is - people will have their viewpoints and they know it already or not out of a willing opinion to accept and/or choose to ignore the subtleties not essential to the definition of what a gamer is.

Perhaps a day will come when saying 'girl gamer' will become as redundant as saying 'boy gamer' in terms of any discrimination between the sexes when it comes to a skill that is totally irrelevant to gender. Genders exist and they have their own attributes and leanings, but it means little to anything but that which is exclusive to the actual genders themselves.

I think: don't make this a big thing if you don't want it to be. Especially if it actually isn't and shouldn't be.

A girl gamer is only different to a guy gamer because there typically aren't many of them and guy gamers have a reputation for being sexless basement dwellers. If you want to help, just stop talking about "girl gamers", as long as there are horny heterosexual young men dominating gaming culture there's always going to be an element of worshiping girl gamers but I don't think you can do anything to help other than letting it be and not giving it the attention it doesn't deserve. It's just one of the many areas of life where sexually desirable people get treated differently and there's nothing that can be done about it.
