Girlfight

Raze is a movie that's nakedly, even proudly, made out of other movies. A lot of the time that doesn't work. But sometimes, somebody actually finds the recipe for gold in the alchemy of pastiche.

....Well, this sounds like a really fucked up movie. I mean, I'm actually glad that it exists, but...think imma give it a pass.

I haven't seen much in this genre, but I'm curious what specific change has to be made to have death battles with an all-female cast not be considered inherently exploitative. Is it as simple as not having the camera lingering on the chest and backside? Because this really does just sound like "Blood Sport" or some kind of grimy fighter but with women.

Reminder that Moviebob went to great lengths to try and justify his enjoyment of Suckerpunch, so Bob's claims of any "subversion" this movie does of it's wife-beater-porn premise should be taken with a grain of salt.

Yeah, I agree on this one. I mean look, any film that is marketed at the fact it has an all female cast is a film I am suspicious about. And doubly so at a film that tries to say "look we are different! We have strong female characters fighting each other. Buy tickets! Any sexual arousal you feel is your fault sicko!" Any film that needs to 'justify' it's violence against woman is one I worry about. I don't want to pre-judge a film and it does kinda cool in a grimy way but I am not convinced. On that point, I always though Neil Marshall's 'The Descent' was an amazing movie with an all-female cast. No skimpy schoolgirl clothes or over sexualisation to prove any ill-judged spurious points. Zack Snyder is NOT a subtle director skilled in visual literacy Bob, I am sorry. (The Superman=Jesus shot. I nearly left the cinema in disgust at the condescending nature of that) Just a solid horror with an all female cast. It has it's cliches and a few well done movie references. But seriously, what I love is that it is no big deal it is an all female cast, It just is how it is. gender is not an issue. Well worth checking out.

...what. Wife-beater porn? It's an illegal arena fighting tournament movie but with women instead of men. How is that inherently exploitative or pornographic? You could MAKE it that way by, as mentioned in this thread, focusing the camera on areas that are decidedly not key to the action taking place, but if you just treat the fights like what they are - fights - why would this be any different from Average RVD Movie?

You left out "A Most Dangerous Game" that a lot of these "human hunting" movies are based on and also Battle Royale.

I did like Zoe Bell in Death Proof, but will probably not see this one.

The next movie I am most looking forward to is the Raid 2.

I'll keep an eye out for this methinks, but will no doubt have to wait for home release as it might be a step too far for the good lady and I don't think I can be arsed to go alone.

Thanks a bunch, that's another thing on the list of that which cannot be unseen.

I've heard from multiple sources that this is good, but it sounds way too nasty for me to watch.

My exact thought, and part of me still wishes it were true. Can't say I intend to watch the movie, though.

At first glance of the movie poster I seriously thought it was a guy wearing a wig.

edit: looks like I'm not the only one :p

As a huge fan of the Kickboxer and Bloodsport series this definitely appeals to me. In those series there was maybe one or two female fighters per movie, some movies had none. I know of two movies that tried this all female thing before, Pushed to the Limit and Angelfist and it was alright, not as good as Bloodsport or Kickboxer but good enough. I'll be honest though, women fighting is kind of a fetish for me so I'll probably enjoy it anyway.

Thank you for mentioning something earlier than Battle Royale. Not only is it relatively late to the party, but honestly I didn't think it was very good.
