"Looking at her career so far, I think Scarlett Johansson is well cast," Sam Yoshiba, director of the international business division at Kodansha's Tokyo headquarters, tells The Hollywood Reporter. "She has the cyberpunk feel. And we never imagined it would be a Japanese actress in the first place."

He added: "This is a chance for a Japanese property to be seen around the world." Yoshiba recently returned from a visit to the New Zealand set of the movie, where he says he was impressed by the respect being shown for the source material.
Not surprised by this, Japan would have been pissed had it been a Chinese actress in the role. Hopefully it will be a good film.

Perhaps it's a bit pessimistic, but yes, I'm sure a director of business, who's concerns (rightfully) lean more towards dollar signs then artistic choices, has nothing bad to say about the movie that will soon shower money upon him.

Just felt like pointing that out. Luckily, I have no dogs in this fight, so when it actually comes to the race thing, I'm just sitting over here, you know...

I never expect foreign adaptations of things to be accurate, don't usually expect them to be good either.

Yeah, I mean when has there ever been a good live action adaptation by Hollywood that...

ok, but that got to be the only...

At least, nothing from this decade that's...

You know upon reflection I think despite Johanson not being a particularly compelling actress this may not be complete shit after all.

To be fair, "we never imagined it would be a japanese actress" sounds less like "this character wasn't japanese" and more like "those fucking americans can barely have a movie about a woman of their own race, we're happy to even be tangently included in a story we wrote about ourselves just so it can get to american audiences"
Funny, to me it sounded like "I love bathing in money." The Japanese dialect is strange, though.

Havent seen any of them, though I want to see Speed Racer cause Ive heard its good...but Dragonball, and Oldboy. Don't have fancy posters to go with them though cause I am lazy.

Edit: One of my three isn't foreign so I removed it.

What does Masamune Shirow think? I'm far more interested in the creators view than that of some manager.
He's too busy drawing porn and making more cash from it than he ever did for GITS, so I don't think he cares too much.

Maybe those other two, but not this one. Oh god, not this one.

The guy's title says it all, Johanson will sell... end of story. Why the hell would they pick anyone else if the prime money maker is X celebrity, I imagine there will be quite a few more money catchers in that movie as long as they can afford them.

And this means no one involved really gives a shit about the franchise.

Is this movie with the Tom base a Japanese manga/Anime? I thought it was base on a book.

Well to be fair, the source material was pretty shit in the first place.

i agree. i mean who really cares what the publisher thinks? they might as well ask a random Japanese on the street what they think. actually no that would be better as they are not hoping to make a fuck ton of money on the movie.

The question everyone has forgotten to ask: Yeah, the Major is hella-important, but what about the rest of Section 9?

Yes, there is alot centered on Motoko Kusinagi, but every character in her organization is a character, not just a throw-in.

So, with Ghost in the Shell and Blade Runner 2 coming out in the same year (2017), is this a glorious dawn for cyberpunk? Or is it the moment where fans of both series declare "ruined forever?"

...Hermes, pass me the popcorn.

It was originally a "light novel", that was adapted into a manga. Then, made into a movie.

Isn't the character's body completely artificial anyway?
Yes, I've said as much numerous times in the other thread about Johansson's casting.

But still

(YMMV)

It's not like Hollywood butchers everything. I mean it's probably unfair to compare Scorsese, Nolan and Fincher to whoever the fuck Rupert Sanders is. Oh, he directed some Halo 3 ads. (okay yes okay he did that Snow White thing too). Well then. Hmm.

You know what nevermind

I NEED to read the a translated version of this novel. I am very curious what kind of changes did for the Movie.
