Give me an example of an adult-oriented, mature western animated film or TV show

Back in the day there was heavy metal. That was during the 80'S. Then they had heavy metal 2000. There where also similar shows that where like this that came on HBO and cinemax back in the early 90's. I wouldn't remember the names of the other ones because that was so long ago. MTV also had quite a few.
Edit: oh and there was a treasure island in space one that wasn't that great. There was also one that had to do with all humans having to leave earth in giant ships and this kid was the son of a famous scientist had to make a new earth... I realize that doesn't give you much to go on but if someone can remember that one it was very good in my opinion.
Edit2: surprisingly early american cartoons where mature for their time many dealing with things such as death. The fox and hound, dumbo, beauty and the beast, the brave little toaster, and one of the most well known toy story.
Edit3: damn I have another one on the tip of my tongue that was combination star wars, he man, and heavy metal but I can't remember it. Its main character was name oron or aron or something.

HBO's run of Spawn is pretty amazing, it's hard to find nowadays but if you can it's more than worth it.
