Give us some decent customization!

If anyone has played Hitman: Bloodmoney (Or whatever the last game was) you will probably have seen the weapon customization options. I'm not talking about shitty stat tweaks (Oh, give me $500 and your weapon will fire 0.4 rounds faster, with 7.351% greater stopping power!), I mean, you want more stopping power? Fine, switch out the slide on your pistols to turn them into fucking Magnums. And they look like magnums as well.

Want to attach some decent kit to your rifle, such as a scope, laser sight or silencer? Weapon cant handle these things? No prob, swap out a piece for one which can and your rifle actually looks like it has a new stock, a new barrel, a new grip.

Or why not go crazy? What say you want a nice Oak or Maple stock with engravings on it, simply because you're fairly satisifed with how your weapon fires, but not with how it looks? Change the weapon colour, change the style of the sights, the style of the slide, whatever.

Carry this over to armour. What if I want to wear a hoody, but body armour underneath? What if I want to put the hood up or down? Or how about wearing knee pads that offer protection, but go over whatever I am currently wearing? elbow pads? a helmet? Webbing that can hold ammo and grenades that goes over your top? Holsters that hold your guns, but they can hold them in different ways? Conceal a gun with a shoulder-holster or carry them on your thigh or hip. Have a knife strapped to your shoulder webbing or have it in your boot.

I think there is a great lack of meaningful appearance customisation in most games - MMORPGs are the worst in this regard, since they often make a great hoo-ha over custom stuff, but eventually - as Yahtzee says - you all end up covered up in Generic Grey Armour of Unexoticness.

These features would be great if applied to RTSs, especially squad based ones - I can't think of any other RTS of this kind that allows the kind of customization you got in UFO: Aftershock and Afterlight.

But I am always on the lookout for games that let me play dolls, so to speak (but who am I kidding, thats what it is  ), so if I happen upon one I will usually buy it for the customisation aspects alone.

What say you?

I say that would be a ***** to code, animate and model. Let alone skin.

It'd be reasonable if you don't mind 16-Bit graphics?

I think customisation is a key part of games, you should be able to make millions of combinations of character design. This is why I like Star Wars Jedi Knight 3: Jedi Academy, you can download thousands of mods to make your character look the wayyou want it too. I think that customising things to your ideal makes the game part yours! Which is why I think every game should do it!

You quite cleary havn't played Saint's Row 2.

However if you have, quit bitching. Do you really think professional video game developers never thought of that kind of indepth customization? OF COURSE NOT! It's just that it would be a real pain to animate and render all those different models and it'll put them several months and several million dollars behind scheduel(video games are a buisness after all, just like movies, TV, and every form of entertainment). Logic is the key phrase here.

He's on about WEAPONS not Player Characters.
There's no real difference there. Every change has to be animated, can't show obvious clipping issues and it would all take up time and money that could better go to creating slightly more believable characters and a better story.

Yes, it would be difficult to animate, but I think it would be an awesome addition. Though I definitely don't believe that it should take away from the story or the characters you meet in it.

It would be cool, but there are numerus reasons it wouldn't be such a good idea.

Didn't you wonder why they didn't do it in said RTS games?

I couldn't agree more, but the logistical challenges are... overwhelming, as people have already mentioned. I have to say my favorite in-game customization is Soul Calibur 4, closely followed by Armored Core 4 (My bro plays the game, I just do the artwork.)

1) I have and 2) you just destroyed your own argument. Saints Row 2 is a great example of what I am talking about - a game that is fun and provides a huge amount of character customisation (not to mention player home and vehicle customisation). There is just a distinct lack of games that boast customisation that actually deliver it to that degree.

A point about spending time and money that could be better spent elsewhere - there is a reason game companies usually split their staff into teams - writers and level designers and engine and graphics coders etc. Would you say Hitman's gameplay and story were hindered by the equipment customisation?

All in all - I have not said this level of customisation should be taken to the extreme level I put in the OP - I am not expecting a company to deliver that level of customisation, though it would be nice if they did. Nor am I asking this to appear in every game or even most games. I would like to see it happen more often. Aftershock and Afterlight didn't have to include weapon addons or armour addons, but they did and the game was better for it.
