Yup, just an emotion, albeit a popular one (I assume you mean you wouldn't feel too guilty if a dog suffered instead of a child). But anyways, I hope now you understand why some people donate to animals? They just have different emotions

I appreciate the fact that people have different emotions, and obviously people are free to donate as they wish to whoever they wish. Still confuses me, though I guess it'll be forever a mystery as to their motivations.

Maybe some of them are those kind of people who've gotten really jaded and cynical about humans. You know, the "humans are all douchebags, and even if I help these people, they're still going to grow up to be douchebags" type.

Or maybe they believe an organism's worth is measured in its total cute-and-cuddliness rating :O

The sad part is I actually know people like that.

Sadder still that I know people that fit into the second category. Cuddly does not equal worth giving money to help. Cuteness is a survival method that makes us want to take care of them. Damn instincts.
