*le talking to ten-year-old kid whose playing Pokemon Black

Me: So, have you caught Reshiram yet?

Kid: Yeah, I've got most of them 'cause I traded with my friends on the computer.

Me: You're lucky, back when I was a kid there was no online trading system. I always had to find somebody with a copy of the game and a link cable so I could get Mewtwo or the legendary birds into my Silver version.

Kid: Get what?

Me: Mewtwo and the legendary birds...Zapdos, Articuno and Moltres? They weren't in the Johto games back then.

Kid: Johto...?

Me: Yeah, Johto, y'know the second country? Cyndaquil, Chikorita, and Totodile? Mewtwo and the birds were only in Kanto in the first games.

*Kid gives me to most vacant stare ever*

Me: ...KANTO! The place where Ash and Pikachu came from? I know you watch that show still!

Kid: Ash comes from Palette Town...

Me: Yeah, that's in Kanto! That was the first season!

Kid: ...You mean Sinnoh?

Me:

When people in MY YEAR at college tell me I'm like someone from a different time (for being gentlemanly to people) and when I'm told I'm an old man in a young man's body because I have incredibly cynical and frustrated reactions to things people say/how they dress.

I've already made several people have startling revelations about how their latest iteration of slang makes them sound like complete cunts.

Sadly, I've been having a lot more of those "God I'm old" moments lately.
Most notably when I thought about the following:
*I used to watch movies on VHS.
*Some of my favorite films, that I saw as a kid, are now between one and two decades old.
*When I mention things like dial up, phone booths, or surfing the web I'm met with blank stares.
*When talking with friends, we say things like "Remember when we were kids and..." or "What ever happened to..."
*My ten year high school anniversary is this year.
*I actually recall thinking as a kid how far off years like 2012 were.

I'm 28.

... hmm .. because I remember that I used to do this to load a game:

1) CGA
2) EGA/VGA
3) SVGA

Followed by this:

1) PC Speaker
2) Adlib
3) Sound Blaster
4) MIDI
5) No Sound

Followed by this:

1) Keyboard
2) Joystick

Or even, sometimes, this:

3) Paddle
Oh God. Why? WHY?! Why did you have to remind me? Now I feel even older.

I'm not really old enough yet to have any particularly bad "God I'm old" moments (I'm only 17 for goodness' sake), but I do remember one of the first few times I had one of those moments. It was when I was at Cadets one night and one of the instructors mentioned He-man (Master of the Universe) and no-one knew what it was, so I ended up having to try and explain it... which went about as well as you'd imagine.

Living on my own and paying my own bills and stuff makes me feel old. Also feeling tired all the time.

I'm only 21.

Also, when I see kids in the school I was in only 5 years ago and think, "Little shits!"
Pretty much this, except replace 21 with 23. It's silly as all hell, but actually having to be a responsible adult makes me feel incredibly old for some reason.

I expected 20-somethings to be in here, considering that's when you become "grow up" and become an adult. I am surprised there haven't been more 30+ responses here. I suppose the Escapist is going to primarily be late teen/early adult crowd, so that might be some of it.

Turning on the Dreamcast.

I'm not sure if its the fanfare of broken discs or the fanfare of nostalgic tears, but both work.

I am 20 now, and a girl (age 19) in my film class for last quarter asked me what a Polaroid is.

I told her "Google it, youngin'!"

This next example hit me more in the department of me maturing. I went to a community college last year, and the coffee distributor for the school got replaced for another between quarters. They raised the price per cup of coffee by a quarter and the first thing I thought was "That's too damned expensive, Jesus..." I was 19 when the price hike happened, and I was baffled at myself for caring about a quarter's difference. I have come a long way from my former, money-wasting time in my life.

I don't get "God I'm old", but tonight I got "God my friends are old".

I'm 22, in exactly a year I finish my degree and start work. I know that for the next 5-15 years I'm still going to be learning, I'm going to be moving from different places and be under people far older and experienced than me. I've finally got to a point where I like who I am and are becoming, in terms of looks, personality, everything.

My life is just beginning.

My old highschool friends on the other hand are getting married, or in practically defacto relationships, they're working pretty standard jobs, nothing too glamorous but nothing really menial. They've got kids or the first topic is friends who have kids. They keep bringing up how far ago highschool was, even though it's only 4 years. And the nostalgia is sickening. I'm not one of these "Highschool was terrible" people, I had some fun times, but it's over and I would never want to relive it.

The whole night has filled with me crippling ennui. To the point where I'm using ennui in a sentence and not filling like a pretentious douche.

I'm much the same way, I'm only 16, but the 9th graders at my school seem unusually... Tiny.

Also, a lot of people my age have never seen a floppy disk. Now, I'm not old enough to have actually used floppy disks extensively, but I at least know what they are.

So much this. (Although, I'm a bit younger than you.)

I also remember being awesome for having a 13" black and white TV in my bedroom.

Seeing kids with several hundred dollar electronics. It really blows my mind. When did kids stop playing with toys?

Realizing that wanting to have a real, verbal conversation in a face-to-face setting is somehow weird to people. My sisters, both significantly younger than I am, will actually text one another from across the room instead of speaking. What?

Remembering when the epitome of being connected was a car phone.

And, ultimately, when I realize how much I've come to rely on technology that was sci-fi-worthy when I was a kid and how natural that seems to young people. Pick up a smartphone to fact check a television show/find out why an actor left a show/find out more history on a movie? Sorcery!

Kids are calling me "sir"

I'm 22 ffs!

Also, reading a textbook in middle school, that had an assignment for the students to do which required using a computer

it had a list of suggestions for activities which you could do whilst waiting for the computer to boot...

having computer class where they taught you how to use floppy disks

my father checking our computer if it had survived y2k

14 year olds being really annoying. i remember being 14 and i added this random 22 year old guy on msn i believe, because we shared the same music interest. he was annoyed by me and deleted me after like 3 conversations, and now i completely understand
