Jaffe is an idiot that likes to run his mouth and get his name in the press kind of like Romero or Jack Thompson. A lot of noise but no actual content. I see room in future generations for streaming content, digital distribution, and physical copies of games without excluding anything.

Anyone who thinks that streaming/cloud gaming is any good is a moron. They need to make internet connections faster and more readily available for people if they expect it to even remotely work. I live in a decent sized town, but internet connections aren't available to everyone even here, depending on where in town you live. I know people who still use Dial up because there's no cable/DSL service. On top of that, many countries STILL have extremely tiny bandwidth caps. You wont be able to play much while streaming if you're capped at 20 gigs a month. Hell, Netflix uses 1 gig per hour in HD.

All you need to do is try Onlive and live a decent distance from their servers, like Canada, to understand. Laggy, low res, unresponsive shit.

He makes one of the biggest mistakes everyone makes in regards to this subject. There is no reason that consoles will disappear. Because smart device gaming is on the rise does not mean that consoles are not viable. The issue that I see is that there is next to no games made for the devoted gamer on those devices. And more would definitely be welcome. But that doesn't mean I want all of my games to be played on a small little screen or with a touch interface.

Also, does anyone listen to this guy? He is so pompous.

Edit: I think what he means is that he won't be making any console games on future consoles, which I'm fine with.

LOL, no really...this guy believes that? This is like making a statement "TV on the rise, means less people are going to go to a movie theatre" >_>

The thing is, those devices have a very tiny screen. We are less likely to be feel satisfied playing a few intense hours of gaming on such a small device. Also add in the lack of physical buttons, constant smearing of screen, and other issues many gamers can add in and your looking at the small devices being a supplement, not a replacement. I don't know about your guys, but I kinda like looking at a hard copy of a video game and enjoying that.

Heres the thing..hard copies will always be in demand...thing is what if a perosn who buys streaming exclive games has a crash and loses all his or her data...what if there is a hackvist attack...No I don't see consoles going away anytime soon. People used to say email and bloggers were going to be the death of the post office and newspapers.
When was the last time you bought a newspaper?
Snap!

Fuck hard copies. Proponents of physical media are very loud on the interwebs but I'm convinced I'm not in the minority as someone who abandoned the collection of those little round plastic discs with relief. The thing is, having physical copies doesn't protect you anymore from the online/ownership demands of publishers. Always online DRM anyone? Diablo 3 teething fiasco? Sure. But I don't see Blizzard actually apologizing for the requirement or it having had a truly negative impact on sales.

It isn't going to happen.
How's the sand down there? Coarse?
There is always a market for hard copies. You need go no further than the brother industries of gaming. Movies and music. Both are vastly based on a form of distribution of their media that is not in their control, that is, online and rental. But there still exists a market for physical copies, because sometimes you jsut wnana own that shiny disc with the painted artwork, the bonus stuff, and the lyrics for the song on the back cover spreadsheet. My point was in that the fellow over there does not understand that killing an industry is just a way of saying they are no longer vital to the media. It doesnt mean they stopped existing or profiting, present and future.

If mobile devices somehow reach the point where they are much more powerful than the PS4 in 10-15 years, and you can use them to output full HD or higher resolutions on your TV, I could perhaps see them being the "next-next gen", but basically I can only see mobile devices becoming more like the consoles and adapting their functionality, rather than consoles abruptly disappearing. At the moment however, mobile gaming is a giant step backwards. Yes, you can make fun little games on those devices, and it's nice that they are portable, but people like to play AAA titles just as much, at home, on a 50 inch screen and with everything turned up to 11. That's not gonna go away in our lifetime I think. As for streaming games and all that shit, yeah, no, not gonna happen, unless in the next 10 years 80% of the world's population has access to fast stable internet, which is not possible since this would also require huge investments from governments in order to build the correct infrastructure, and the way global economy is going it's laughable to think that this is going to happen.

Wait, why are consoles disappearing? Actually, HOW? I mean, granted the guy said he has "no track record of guessing this shit." but he does occupy a pretty big role in a respectable company. He should at least have an idea.

Consoles won't go away, they'll just evolve. Streaming? Well they'll probly make a console for that, Microsoft at least. Sony make their own TVs so they could create the console directly implemented in it.

Oh, sure, it won't be a box near the TV. But guess what, if I can play various games on my TV, without any other external hardware, my TV's a console. Yes, a previously different technological object will receive an upgrade and will become a viable gaming console.

Kind of like... MOBILE GAMING! HOLY SHIT! CONSPIRACY!

I dont want to buy a Nintendo TV, a Microsoft TV and a Sony TV just to stream my games to depending on the exclusives I want to play!
It might be implemented the way that payTV is at the moment, where you basically buy a CI card from a provider, which then allows your receiver to decode the TV stream for those channel.
So you might buy any TV, and then a Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony access card.
There's still the problem of controllers, though, at least in case of the Wii or Kinect. The Wii might actually work, but as far as I understood it, the Kinect handles some fairly complex calculations which probably generate a vast amount of data. Even if in a few years everyone will have a Terabit glass-fibre connection in their home, I would expect manufacturers and providers to try to keep the lines free.

Then again, ten years is a long time when technology is concerned.

PS: although I usually do not care what Captcha I get (as long as I can read it), "good riddance" is weirdly appropriate...

I can't see this working in terms of streaming, I personally think it'll go digital distribution though, with a larger hard drive and an online game collection that you just buy online and download onto your console.. Seems much more logical since that system is already in place, each console has their own market place already.

Streaming, just won't work, not until we can get super duper fast wireless via satellite.

That, or PC will come out on top. People want to own their games. And they want to be able to mod their games as well. Fuck streaming.

I don't see how streaming will mean the death of consoles.

I'm not going back to gaming on PC. It takes up too much harddrive space, it costs too much to get a decent gaming rig which is basically redundant when I have a laptop anyway, and I will never ever game on a laptop. I don't like the controllers they offer for PCs, and all in all I like the experience of having a dedicated gaming platform attached to my tv.

As far as I understand it, a console is a piece of hardware devoted to the playing of videogames, kind of like how a DVD player is a piece of hardware dedicated to the playing of DVDs, and I don't see PCs ever taking that over in the way they've taken over DVDs. Maybe if they could do it in a way similar to DVDs, where you just put the disc in and play, but otherwise no.

Maybe they won't be consoles into which we put discs, but they'll still be consoles.

I'll be able to stream in the next Uncharted and Plants vs Zombies and you won't even think about it. It'll just be like I can watch a public access show on my TV or I can watch Avatar.

Except it will either look like mincraft or the loading will be replaced with "buffering". Unlike TV Jaffe, games will take a lot of bandwidth which needs to be kept-up with the player's gaming pace.

Jaffe, either STFU and make a innovative game (like you are promising) or retire from gaming development and take Patcher's job.

That's a fair point to weigh, one I hadn't much considered. Mostly I just think of the recent Extra Credits episode about the bandwidth crunch, and I think "damn, streaming is probably going to get pretty expensive in the near future." It's just not that fun an idea. I'd rather have the damn thing on disc (or disc-analogue) or downloaded in its entirety, ready for use and access at will. Having to wait for buffering because in the next room my roommate is watching porn or My Little Pony on the same net connection just seems like it would piss me off more.

all this being said, they've already put simple phone games (bejeweled lol) on cable boxes, so they can stream anything they want on their own networks

they could probably upgrade to nes games if they got the proper licensing and made the remotes more responsive

Don't worry, Jaffe's saying the same crap that was going to happen this generation.

I don't like the sound of the streaming idea, to be honest I still like this cycle, the only problem I have my 360 is ancient, if I undid all the updates I'd have the blades dashboard, the problem of this being I have a 20GB hard-drive, I have 2GB left

Pretty much; whenever Jaffe opens his mouth he comes off as a bitter old man who's trying to act cool. There's nothing worse than a 40-year-old trying to act "hip" and "edgy."

Anyway, I can see gaming consoles becoming obsolete, but I doubt the next generation is going to be the last. Despite what publishers like to think we're not quite there yet in terms of infrastructure to be able to sustain pure streaming. Ten years even might a little too soon
