God of War Director Still Loves Dante's Inferno

God of War [http://www.amazon.com/Dantes-Inferno-Divine-Playstation-3/dp/B001NX6GBK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1279312350&sr=1-1], but nobody really seems to mind.

Whatever happened to good old brain-bashing videogame rivalries? In the case of God of War versus Dante's Inferno, it looks like everybody is getting along just fine... a little too fine if you ask me. God of War III director Stig Asmussen told the press last year [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/91017-God-of-War-Boss-Hopes-Dante-Is-Awesome] that he hoped Dante's Inferno would be awesome, and now after actually playing the game he's back stating that he still likes it.

We've been talking about how similar Dante's Inferno is to God of War so much that my pancreas is about to fall out, but guess what, it's true. Dante's Inferno has done a little bit to differentiate itself from God of War, including the future addition of a level editor [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/98051-Dantes-Inferno-DLC-Adds-a-Level-Editor], but the two franchises are still very similar. Something that stuck out to me in particular is the way Dante turns a crank just like Kratos. Regardless, Asmussen couldn't care less, as he told UK Official PlayStation magazine: "We've been intrigued about Dante's Inferno. This is my favorite genre, and the more people that are making [these games] the better." What? Where's the hatred and vitriol that we can latch onto and blow out of proportion?

He continued: "And this is a really rich story they're building on, it's very interesting. The day that the demo came out we were trying to download it on PSN at midnight. We all wanted to see it." I'm thinking this is the type of situation just like when you pretend you want your brother to get a good job but in actuality you secretly hope he fails in everything he does so you can look like the good child.

Honestly, Asmussen should be loving Dante's Inferno right now. It's been getting decent reviews, and serves as the perfect appetizer for God of War III, set to release on March 16 in North America (March 19 in Europe). Videogame store employees everywhere right now are attacking customers with the line: "If you liked Dante's Inferno, you'll love God of War III, so pre-order today!" The best part for everyone is that they're not even lying. I'm going to look into Asmussen's recent stock purchases, but he really has nothing to gain from bashing Dante's Inferno anyway.

This is good! I'm quite fed up with people ragging on Dante's Inferno because it copies elements from God of War. I often like to argue that God of War copies a lot of it's combat ideas from Devil May Cry, and I still feel it does - but the similarities between Dante's Inferno and God of War are staggering. Far more than there are between DMC and God of War.

Regardless, if the game is executed well and plays well I'm not going to harp on it being a clone so long as I'm having a good time :)

i dont think real gaming companies get mad/defensive about their games, i mean most games that share genres are very similar. all FPS games are point and shoot w/ vehicles and grenades.

all MMORPGs have some form of grind to it. etc etc.

its actually cool to see them give dante's inferno such good reviews, i wasnt gonna buy it i am now simply because the god of war (/drool) director gives his approval on it.

Don't worry, people will find something in this story to blow out of proportion.
Never underestimate fanboys or the internet.

If I had money I would get the game, but I plan on getting Bad Company 2, Heavy Rain, and God of War 3, so I'll be set for a while :p

thats actually great to hear. i dont fucking care if it copies both a few puzzles and almost the entire control scheme of GOW. GOW was inspired from Devil May Cry, so people going about with that should probably shout that instead.

i love the game myself, im in Heresy on my 4th playthrough right now. ive only encountered a few things i didnt like so far, and they are mainly nitpicks:

1. Final boss (guess who it is) is extrodinarily cheap.
2. Cleopatra is the most disgusting woman ever to be in Hell. im serious, this goes under flaws. the QTE deaths against are downright nerve-wracking (why cant Dante resist tits for just 2 fucking seconds)...
3. camera can be slightly dodgy at times.
4. Hoarder-Wasters (the 2 guys melted together wielding a club) are extremely annoying.
5. lots of random nudity, ESPECIALLY during lust.

besides the Directers opinion, i would like to state to you that its a very enjoyable game, with fantastic voice acting, great characters, interesting boss fights and BEAUTIFUL cut-scenes (the CGI ones, the normal ones look very good as well).

I guess this is like how the makers of Ratchet series and Jak series seemed to be good friends.

Asmussen doesn't need to bash Dante's Inferno.

God of War 3 will do it for him.

They included Easter Eggs in their games referencing each other to boot.

But yeah, the whole "DANTE'S INFERNO IS A SHITTY CLONE OF GOD OF WAR" argument never made sense to me. Thankfully now people will shut up about it.

That's really good to hear. I'm glad that some game developers can manage not to be petty about things like this and actually support each other in such a cutthroat market. Truly, this is one of the only instances I've ever heard of game developers not fighting over stupid things, and it's ironic that it happens in one of the most violent genres possible. I hold a new respect for the God of War director.

I can't stress this enough. The same lead level designer worked on both God Of War and Dante's Inferno. That is why it is so similar in so many ways. That being said I can't defend the combat. They should pressure themselves for a bit more originality but I don't really care. Regardless I am not going to buy it because there are better games on the horizon, for example Heavy Rain!

This makes me happy..now i can rest a little better knowing that even the head guy behind God of War loves Dante's Inferno. having said that there's still gonna be some misinformed dummy that will still ride the "I luv Krat0s LOL" bandwagon.

That's some nice optimism you've got there. Sadly, I don't it'll happen that way.

The day after I played the demo for Dante's Inferno, I was telling all my paintball buddies about it, and the conversation went like this:

Me: It is just like God of War in almost every way
Friend: And how is this a bad thing?
Me: Exactly.

And that basically summed up our collective feelings towards the game when it finally came out in the States. This game is just too fucking awesome.

That's not exactly random if it's in lust
im saying especially during lust because it isnt the only area with random nudity.
