I'm sure you have seen those bands that have that annoying pretty-boy frontman, usually 99.9% of the time it's the vocalist. And hasn't it annoyed you when that attention whore is always on the front of band pictures striking a eccentric pose while the other bands members are just looking plain normal and cool in the back? This happens in music videos too, just check out this video:

No offense to the band or the frontman, I like the song, but it just seems so damn stupid how the music video just focuses on him. (Can anyone tell me how to make it appear on my post?)

Can you name any frontman that is like that?

EDIT: Figured it out.

No I can't name any bands as I don't care about artists, I go song by song, not band by band.

AS to the pretty boy phenemonon?

See: Twilight fangirls.

Not off the top of my head, but I definately get what you mean.

Sometimes I think I could tell people I am the drummer from band X, and no one would know if I was telling the truth.

Pity I'm a terrible liar, or I'd be knee deep in girls, girls, girls.

U2 are a little bit like this. Especially when you see them live. Bono struts about the stage, dancing, interacting with the audience etc. The Edge will have a donder about the stage for a wee bit, but it's mostly Bono.
You even tend to forget that Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen are even there.

Same logic can be applied to the Rolling Stones. But then, it is IMPOSSIBLE to upstage Mick Jagger

A lot of bands focus on the singer, he's the most mobile of the band members, about half the time, they just have a mic, not guitar, so they can do interesting things like jump around. And as a singer in Rock Band, I can say singers tend to enjoy doing things out in front of people more than drummers or guitarist, in general

I'm not really that into music videos, honestly.

Shoot, when you mentioned prettyboys, I thought this was a visual kei thread.

They call the guy in front the "frontman" because he's the one in the front (crazy but true). It's his job as the singer to tell the story of the song and also project his personality. It helps if he looks pretty as this will make him more personable to the audience. Market research has shown that pretty people sell more records than ugly people, so these frontmen tend to be attractive at least in some broad, subjective sense (nobody finds everybody attractive). The guys in the back playing instruments don't have to be as pretty, it's nice if they are but if there's an ugly one it's no big thing... the singer is the one "selling" the song, ultimately. It's just marketing.

The thing is, most people can connect with the singer. Sure, there are exceptions, but a normal person with no musical knowledge can't really connect with the guitar tracks or drumming like another musician can. Now, the singer, on the other hand, normal people can connect with because and idiot that can open their mouth and talk can sing along (not saying it will sound good) and relate to the words (unless your singing about slaying dragons and what not, then again the only people who listen to those bands are people who have some musical talent and enjoy the guitar tracks or drumming).

Those are just my two cents on the subject.

Isn't the guitarist from Fall Out Boy the most well known of the band rather than the frontman? So you do get exceptions to the rule.
The Bass player is, he writes the lyrics to all the songs and has a pretty face. The singer is now fat however so yea; musically I appreciate him since he arranges the music and anyone who writes music can understand why.

Not a fan of Fall Out Boy, but I'm also not a self absorbed asshole who gets a stiffy by insulting music that people like and I do not.

Not a pretty boy, but still
Hayley Williams from Paramore.
I mean yea she's pretty but she's not the only member from the band.

Yeah I was gonna mention this too, while not to the same degree as pretty-boy frontmen, a lot of female frontwomen kinda use their looks to fashion the bands, for examples see Xandria, Arch Enemy, Nightwish, Otep.

Most bands re like that regardless of the frontman's appearance. It is the visual focal point regardless. Thats why they are called the "Frontman". It is nice though when the whole band seems notable.

Dude, that is most definitely not a pretty boy vocalist.

Pretty boys and girls are hot shit. It works so why should they stop?
