...Did you try putting a new battery in?
I for one use the Anywhere MX mouse, it has two buttons on the left side, a middle one below the mouse wheel, and although the mouse wheel its self also has a button if you push down on it it will take about the same force to use the button as it would to open two Pop cans at once and the button will also change the scrolling from smooth and fast to more jaggedy. Sure it may not be a super fancy awesome gaming mouse that glows and has glowing laser beams, but I've grown fond of the lil inanimate object... Although I can still live without it, I'm not crazy or any thing.

Well, my mouse just stopped working a couple minutes ago. I've only just managed to stop miming over the mousepad...
I'm typing this on my laptop, and the touchpad thingy is a huge pain in the arse to use. So:

What the hell kind of mouse should I get? Considering I know fuck-all about these things, I thought I'd ask you guys.

And for discussion: What accessories could you live without, but would really hate to lose? Not limited to computer accesories.

[sub]Turns out I haven't got over the miming. Grrr...[/sub]
A microsoft bluetrack mouse http://www.amazon.ca/Microsoft-Wireless-Mobile-BlueTrack-Technology/dp/B002R0JJW6/ref=pd_cp_sw_1

I have used these for years and they are amazing, I will not get another brand.
they work an almost any surface except things like water and such, they have good range and everything.

The roccat kone seems to be at a reasonable price, has all the needed features for gaming, looks great and it has lights that can be changed to a custom color.

Before you reply...
SHUTTUP! You know you want one.

Go down to some computer shop and get your hand on the mouse they have on display and get a feel for them. That's the only thing that really matters, then just double check with reviews that they have a decent laser.

things to consider;

Palm or Clasp

This is how you will actually hold the mouse, will you place your palm on the back to move it around or will you clasp it between your thumb and ring/pinkie to move it around.

Click quality
This is subtle but can matter a lot, it it has a stodgy or overly stiff click then that will lead to more miss-clicks. Especially if you ever try a game like minecraft. That's for both left and right click. Mine the "drag and drop" if you have to click down so hard the mouse is pressed down so much it jerks over the mouse mat, then you have a problem.

Wheel quality
A lot to consider with the wheel. Would you like a smooth one or one that clicks down in stages? Is the resistance/definition fire enough for you, you can only know by getting your hands on one and imagine using it in practice.

extra buttons
Almost all new mouse controllers on the market have more than the requisite M1 and M2 buttons. You might want to look into accessory buttons, they can be very very handy for more efficient navigation and also of course PC gaming. I know you may not care about gaming on PC but this minecraft revolution you may see more and more great games on PC that can be too much to miss.

Mouse mat
this matters a lot. This can give a cheap mouse far better precision, also one that is wide, and the RIGHT AMOUNT of friction will vastly improve your efficiency. You don't want a super slippery surface, that'll be hard to hold on point. You want one that'll glide easily when you want to yet stick fast when you press down.

Try clicking rapidly on this mouse mat, does the position shift?

Sensors
might want to look into one of these new blue-track mouse controllers. It's so handy to be able to use a mouse on any table or your thigh even.

Razer Deathadder for me. Mouse button 4 has broken for me now :( Had it for about a year, obviously doesn't like being my PTT.
I just realised now, that Razer actually has a 2 year warranty on their mice (and most other products)!

http://www.razerzone.com/warranty/en_GB#question5

Check the link, you can also find the warranty terms on the page. It's pretty straighforward.
I'm almost certain that you can use your warranty in this case!

However, check Amazon. They have a decent computer mouse selection. This is the one I use [http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-HKA-00001-SideWinder-Gaming-Mouse/dp/B000TTQFIS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1303655867&sr=8-1].
Hot Damn!
To the computer mouse as well. x3
Goddamn it...as much money as I paid for this Razer mouse it should damn well jiggle like that >_<
You could always get a mousepad like one of these [http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_14?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=oppai+mousepad&x=0&y=0&sprefix=oppai+mousepad] for a similar simulation.

That really is bad luck. I just thought for a moment i was able to help out here :p
Ohh well, losing 1 of the 2 side buttons kinda' sucks, but i guess it's up to the user to decide if it's worth exchaniging the mouse for. I mean, the mouse is still pretty neat. Blue light n' shit :D

Anyways, it's nice to know the warranty is there, just in case someone/you need it for some other Razer Product. I know i will, since i'm quite the Razer fanboy after i got this mouse. I got a Razer Lycosa Keyboard that emits the same blue light as the mouse, and it really matches the mouse and my self built PC, that emits the exact same blue light!
... how did i get here again?

Meh, try sending Razer an Email regarding your situation. It doesn't really hurt to spend 2 minutes checking :D

... Why am i so tempted to buy one of those! They look awefully comfortable!!! D:
Guess i can just as well buy one of those hugging pillows now that i'm already at it xD

Thanks mate, but I'm not that bothered to be honest. The button must have broken about four months ago, so that tells you how much I care. I've got the Lycosa Mirror Edition meself, so the shiny blue glowy things are a nice set.

Captcha: perfectly ditypper.

If you FPS then there really is only one choice IMO: Razer DeathAdder

Other than that, get whatever, gaming grade mouse is only needed for FPS... unless you're a MMO nut then you may want one of those monstrosities that is covered in buttons that you can assign macros to.

Logitech make good mice. I would have a hard time without my current phone, because it also doubles as an mp3 player.

Do not. I repeat, DO NOT GET A RAZER MOUSE!

A cheep mouse should be everything you need. Just go into a random electronics store and buy whatever mouse in your price range you should be all set.

Thats my favorite model :) The little back button under the mouse wheel is great!
I have that same one, it still lives on despite the hell I put it through. I like the fact that it gets great battery life and I agree that the back button is excellent.

Touch pad, I have a mouse on my desk that I could use, but that would involve me either A) Sitting in front of my desk and not laying on my bed on top of a cushy pillow or B) Finding a smooth, hard, surface that I could sit on my bed, like a textbook. None can be found though. I've mastered that pad enough that I used to play TF2 with it as most every class.

Besides, mouse clicks get on my nerves.

The mouse is also one of the myriad number of reasons why I hated my Word Processing class that I needed to take for my Pre-Reqs despite being fully capable of typing and using MS Word.
