So, I just got myself a Good Old Games account and started playing some of the free games, but I would like to get some more games to play, so Escapists, do you have any suggestions for games for me to purchase in the future? I would really appreciate it! :D

EDIT: I usually play platformers, rpgs, action games, shooters and I am getting into strategy games as well.

You'll need to be more specific on what sort of games you like, so we can tailor our suggestions better.

But I'm gonna suggest this deal going on at the moment at GOG. Discounts on all DnD games, Baldur's Gate, Planescape, Icewind Dale, the lot.

You have one day left. Go get it.

Obligatory Witcher recommendation, if you haven't got it already. The popular wisdom is that the second game is the better in the series. Don't know if you were looking for slightly older games.

I'm not sure what you mean by strategy games, just because it's a nebulous genre, but the Rollercoaster Tycoon and Theme Hospital games are good choices if you're into those sorts of construction/business sims. I know there are decent Let's plays on the Nerdcubed youtube channel for both those games if you want to check them out.

Nox
Inquisitor
The Baldurs gate bundle that they have going right now
Witcher series
Heroes of might and magic III
Empire Earth 1
Wargame European Escalation "on special right now"
Arcanum Steamworks
Thief Gold
Sacred Gold
Planescape torment
Zork, Nemisis/Grand inqisitor in particular
Battle chess, for casual thinking/fun

Now ive listed games that ive beaten, some are quite hard such so Im not going to speculate on your gaming skill but because GOG means Good old Games, a lot of these "old" games tend to show no mercy

Freespace 2. It's THE BEST space fighter sim out there. If you've never played it, fix that problem. NAO!

I personally recommend getting Fallout 1 and 2. Pretty fun games IMO. The combat and interface take some getting used to, but other than that.

Arcanum - one of my favourite RPGs ever and I first played it a year ago.

Arx Fatalis - it's a first person RPG, the first game of Arcane Studios, who made Dishonored. It's worth a try, although I can't guarantee if you'd like it or not, it's still interesting.

Commandos - all three are awesome tactical/strategy games. Real classics

Deus Ex - if you're into RPGs and haven't played that WHAT ARE YOU DOING?

Disciples 2 - turn based strategy similar to Heroes but also good.

Dungeon Keeper - both are brilliant but are more strategy-ish. You have a dungeon. And you...erm, keep it. By using goblins, demons, skeletons, traps and magic. Show those lowly dwarves, elves, and human heroes where they can shove their goodness.

Fallout - both 1 and 2. Though they may be a bit...old

Gothic - another bunch of RPGs which I think you should try if you haven't already.

Heroes of Might and Magic - any and all, but if you want one of them - probably get 5, I think it's the most newbie friendly, but it's otherwise pretty much 3 with a new coat of paint (well, until we get to Tribes of the East expansion which is brilliant and you should totally play that). Heroes 4 is also an option but it's a bit different from the rest of the series.

Nox - I played it again (earlier this week) and holy hell, I went from "I remember liking this game back in the day" to "I fucking love it". But it's an action RPG more Diablo-like.

System Shock 2 - classic

Thief - stealth classics, all of them. 3 is considered the weakest but I'd still play it.

RPGs:

Baldur's Gate series, Planscape Torment and Icewind Dale. DnD classics that are very fun, while I'm not the biggest of realtime/pause, they pull it off well giving deep gameplay and all but the icewind dale games have a great story.

Geneforge. Really this in one of my favorite RPG series of all time, great turn based gameplay with a lovely story in a great unique setting.

Wizardry 6, 7 and 8. I think the best dungeon crawler type RPGs, really my favorite of all time. You might want to skip 6 and 7 if your new to dungeon crawlers since 8 is the easiest to learn.

Might and Magic series. Another great dungeon Crawler series, 1-5 are really old school and while now 6-8 are oldschool too, they are pretty unique and not too hard to get into.

Strategy:

Alpha Centauri. My favorite 4x game in existance, has great lore and an awesome setting with some good characters, especially for a 4 x strat game.

Master of Magic. A really old school games but another great 4 x, You play a wizard lord who tries to conquere the world from other wizards. It's a classic and many games tried and failed to take it's place.

Total Annihilation. A great RTS, very well balanced and also has really good physics engine that makes weaposn act like they would.

Action:

Descent 1 and 2 (not 3 though.). Classic FPS games that mixed in complete 3d movement, they are very unique and fun for FPS game with something different.

Magic carpet series. I really love these games, very unique though a bit old. The first magic carpet will take some dosbox tweaking, GoG kinda dropped the ball with that one but MC2 works well.

Avoid-

Shattered Steel. It's a mess, projectiles shoot through the enemies and is just unplayable.

Shogo. Not a good FPS, has an insulting storyline that tries to be anime and the gameplay sections outside of your mech (which is most the game) are terrible quicksave fests due to how horrid the health system balance is(worst use of a medkit system I've played).

Raiden Legacy. Really poor port from the arcade, crashed constantly for me, also if you get it to work you have highly limited credits meaning you won't get much value from the games.

There are so many I don't even know where to begin, but here's a list of my favorites:

-Planescape Torment
-Baldur's Gate (all of them)
-Dungeon Keeper 1+2 (2 has better graphics and balance, 1 has a better atmosphere)
-Sacrifice
-Earth 2160
-Freespace 2
-Painkiller
-Blood
-Ground Control 2
-Disciples 2

You're gonna have to get more specific, that list alone that I gave you would chew up several months of playtime.

Most DnD games would be great to get, but Baldur's Gate will probably be the one that would be seen as mandatory, as it is the special blend of the games that creates a great experience. Stronger combat than Planescape, but better story than Icewind Dale. It's the love child of the two that blends it together just right to make the game that it is.

Also get the Fallout games. I'd say they're better on GoG as they are just as cheap but GoG is DRM free.

Oh, and get the Ultima games. You should have 4 simply from signing up, which is awesome, so give that a spin to see how you like it(and read the manual) and then see if you want to try the others. If you really don't care that much about it, just get 7 then. 7 is great, only $6, and you don't need to play any of the other ones to get it. Most of them are pretty stand alone except the last 3, but you could stop with 7 and just say the Guardian is gone for good, and that 8 and 9 don't exist.

And if you're into making your own things, Neverwinter has a great level designer, so you can technically craft your own DnD campaign all through the Neverwinter engine. Besides that, the main story blows, and the expansions I never got around to playing, so I can't attest for those.

Besides that, I can't think of any other major games you should get. I still need to fill my library some more.

For strategy, try "Masters of Magic" and "Masters of Orion (1+2)". They come with full manuals, too!

Also, if you want to try adventure gaming classics, try the first two Myst games (Myst Masterpiece and Riven). Avoid RealMyst (it's really glitchy) and Uru Chronicles (you can find it for free at mystonline.com) from the same series.

Anachronox is great adventure game, full of jokes, memorable characters and different worlds. THOUGH it tries to be a "jRPG" game in combats, which is a bit boring. But overall, it's a gem.

Shogo. Not a good FPS, has an insulting storyline that tries to be anime and the gameplay sections outside of your mech (which is most the game) are terrible quicksave fests due to how horrid the health system balance is(worst use of a medkit system I've played).
are you sure? i first played it 2 years ago and had fun.

p.s.
+1 for Psychonauts

Also, Outcast is very interesting game, though controls a bit outdated
