I'm going to New York on holiday (26th), what can I expect?

Has anyone been to New York or lives there that can tell me what to expect?

I went on holiday there 4 years ago when I was 16. I honestly think back to it every day. It was the greatest experience of my life and once I finish uni I'm saving up and moving there (I live in England and go to uni in Wales)

It will be amazing, trust me. You'll never be able to pick your jaw up off the floor

Tons of people and very expensive. I assume you are going to the city, I was born and raised in upstate NY and I will save you some time by letting you know that anything interesting to be found in NY is in the city so you don't need to bother with the rest of the state.

Yeah I'm visiting the city and going to all the main attractions, my hotel is in Hells Kitchen so I'm looking forward to it.

I've managed to accumulate $281 in travel money (I live in England btw).

I live in NY and i got a small list of things

Everything interesting is in the city
Dont trust anyone
Crowds are a pain in the ass
If you got time visit some of the sites or go to a Broadway show
New Yorkers can spot tourists a mile away, dont bother hiding it

If you're going to tour around New York, keep your eye out for the Triforce. In my stay there last New Years (However many years ago that was...) I found the Triforce graffiti'd in 2 completely different parts of the place.

Also, the people watching is terrific there, and not to mention the street performers in the subways. You can get your nights' entertainment just by walking a block or two.

I live less than 20 miles outside Midtown (New Jersey). Honestly, I love other cities, but New York is one my always-go-back-to favorite.

-Don't expect pleasantries from strangers. For a massive city of people constantly in connection with each other, people tend to stick to their own personal bubbles.
-Taxis in NYC are relatively cheap, though I heavily suggest the subway system. Don't you dare call it a Metro.
-Expense. Manhattan can be extremely expensive, be prepared to shell out serious dollars for food in some districts like the Upper East Side.
-Pizza. Get some. Seriously. NY Pizza > everything else. You can either live in pizza ignorance and be happy with what you have, or go home with a great experience and hatred of all other pizza.
-Heat. It's pretty darn hot here in the summer, and extremely humid. Keep that in mind.

Where abouts are you going? The city is absolutely massive. As a New Jersey resident, whenever I say "the city" I'm almost always referring to Manhattan. Within Manhattan, I love Chelsea.

Dont trust anyone
This is why you shouldn't expect any pleasantries. New Yorkers are always on guard, everyone they don't know is suspect. Kindness to strangers is accepted with suspicion.

My hotel is Hell's Kitchen, I'm visiting the main attractions for example; The Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, central park etc. I'm going on a helicopter tour of the city too, can't wait, mostly the bottom half of the island (if you call it that) or the bottom of New Jersey.

From were I live I have to travel from...

Newcastle > Heathrow (London) > JFK

I fly to London at 4am and 6am I start my flight to the US, it will supposedly take 6hours :/, I'm honestly hyped considering its basically tomorrow.

I live in NYC. (I'm only a kid though.)

Fun place to be really. Watch out for muggers. (most New Yorkers will know how to counter act, because you can get mugged a lot) Times Square is probably one of the best experiences of your life. You wouldn't believe how many people would be there. Whole crowds of people, crossing the street in this one place. It's crazy.

Yeah like Mikemart said, we can spot tourists a mile away. Bring a map or something so you don't get lost though... (it's a HUGE city.)

There's 5 boroughs, Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, Manhattan and Staten Island. Manhattan contains Times Square, Queens is home to City Field and some other various attractions, Bronx has Yankee Stadium, and I really don't visit Staten Island or Brooklyn a lot... (Like you knew the five boroughs, but just in case.)

Have fun!

Whatever happens, do not buy anything from the Jamaican salesman. They are not real Rolexes.
I have been to New York, so I know.

Make sure you have PLENTY of sleep. Really, jet lag is a horrible enemy.

EDIT: Oh, and you won't meet one single true New Yawker in Manhattan. Do not mistake the accents.

There's a really good resturaunt by the corner of 55th and 8th in Manhattan called "Matt's Grill". I reccomend going there. And if you go to Rockefeller center, you HAVE TO go to the Nintendo World store.

Yes, Nintendo World store is fun, but nothing out of the ordinary really. But a nice place to go for memories.

I go to school in New York and I can tell you there is A LOT of hype about a bunch of places. Probably the best place to get Chinese food is a place in China Town called Wo Hop cheap and good. I cannot remember the place I went to in Little Italy for a good Italian meal. Basically if you want to find a good place to eat don't go for the ones with the huge signs look for the small places because those are usually the best. Also for cheap $5 food there are the Halal food carts. Chicken and Rice, Lamb and Rice, Philly Cheese steak, Hot Dogs.

I can say that D Bones is right People watching is one of the best things to do in NYC. Also something thats free and pretty cool to do is take the Staten Island Ferry.
