Good alternative to Fire Emblem?

I like the idea of Fire Emblem; about 90% I like; but a maybe little thing keeps me from being able to really play it. That is the fact that EXP is a limited resource and when one of your soldiers dies, they die forever, taking their items and EXP with them.

Just now, for one example, I'm playing in a foggy area, and I place Franz on a fortress space to give him a bit stronger defense while he fights, when on the next turn out from the fog comes a monster of a soldier who has full accuracy and an insane 30 damage stat despite attacking someone in a fortified position.

So, obviously next time i have to remember not to go that direction and having dealt with several of these kinds of instances something happens. I have a realization that I am no longer playing a strategy game at all! If anything, its a puzzle game where I have to memorize future events and move to block them before they happen because i know they will happen already.

Sure, I know the logic behind the permanent deaths, that when someone's dead it doesn't make sense for them to come back to life, but with death perminant and EXP limited allowing even one person to die becomes an almost unacceptable loss, I feel like I'm no longer free to experiment or play strategist. Instead, I feel forced to hit reset every single time somebody dies and play through the motions of the battle making slight changes every time someone dies until I reach the end of the battle.

I want to play a STRATEGY turn based war game, not a 'find the flawless victory' puzzle game. Is there a game out there that lets me do that?

FE? Franz? We're talking about Sacred Stones... Right?

In other FE games, Exp is a limited resource, yes. But, not in Sacred Stones.
Once you beat chapter 8, you can grindy-grind-grind to your hearts content, which is why in those early chapters, I let Seth do all the fighting. So as to not risk losing anyone.

Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy Tactics, Disgaea, that Grotesque Tactics game on steam.
There's probably more, but I just don't know.

didn't know this one would have a grinding spot; I've played radiant dawn and shadow dragon as far as I could and figured this one was likely the same. sounds like I'm about 3 chapters away still though ><

There's 2 actually, but the first is unlocked after chapter 8.

In the first 8 chapters, only Seth and Orson should be fighting anyone. They're Paladins, they're already in their prestige Class, let them soak up the 'exp' and damage. Just be sure to strip Orson of all his items before that chapter ends... Just sayin.

Final Fantasy Tactics, the original one on the PS1.

Awesome Story, Awesome Soundtrack, Awesome Battle System.
I think that was released on PSN, it totally worth it.
