Good and bad soundtracks

If I had to choose just one soundtrack that's above all others, I would go with Final Fantasy VII. Whenever I listen to it I remember how it felt to play FFVII for the first time.

Prelude [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_jA-zmzsRA]
Main Theme [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-HBnhhtSmo] (piano version [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6kt488iWk8])
Aerith's Theme [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q85KIhPXrIQ] (piano version [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COLhmLE7oSs])
Tifa's Theme [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ky-cTSKlKQ] (piano version [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wc8t6TZvL0c])
On Our Way [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DeXeXGXzYrA] (piano version [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79S6suhtWkY])
Dear to the Heart [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zKhEKulpoI]
Flowers Blooming in the Church [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjhHx-yk4HE]
Interrupted by Fireworks [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iY9gkwaz2m8]
Other Side of the Mountain [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TsifNcb6vO4]
Heart of Anxiety [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xO1V9OSW3ys]
Cid's Theme [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2WYkfGYD8k]

Final Fantasy VI has some amazing tracks too, like Terra's Theme [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joRZL671Esk], Opening Theme [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDH4pLa7TI0] (the last part of it, actually) and Celes' Theme [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMO_rZr--FA]. Mega Man 2 had awesome music [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEbI_EzyTWc], and if you want to get even more oldskool than that then there's always Last Ninja 2 [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9s2uA1jcZn4]. Oh yeah.

I wish people wouldn't bring up games like GTA and Tony Hawk in these threads. It's just licensed music.

The Monkey Island series have phenominal soundtracks. I also like anything from Yasunori Mitsuda.

I like Godsmack, but not in PoP, so Warrior Within gets my vote for the bad soundtrack.

While the game itself could be a lot better the "Universe At War" soundtrack is awesome, especially the Masari part. Frank Klepaki still makes some of the best ingame music.

PoP Warior Within - And he introduced me to Godsmack ("I Stand Alone").
Likewise. The best are intro music and dahaka chase (I stand alone)btw I prefer the warrior within over the other two
Oblivion - its so great I get chills every time i listen to intro music

C&C

(Go to the Jukebox at the bottom of the page, scroll down by one topic to see C&C. CLICK ON IT.)
Listen to this man! I've got all of the C&C music permanently imprinted not only on my hard drive, but also in my brain.

First place in the 'good soundtrack' category is a tie though. The score of Hitman: Blood Money deserves its spot at the top. Imagine sneaking through a house riddled with FBI guardsmen, silently disposing of all of them with your fibre-wire with this this playing in the back of your head. *bliss*

ok my favorite:

Any castlevania game
Chrono trigger
tony hawk pro skater 2
Legend of zelda games
Final fantasy VI
Donkey kong country series
Devil may cry series
and don't forget the vice city soundtrack... every time I hear a song from that game any where it takes me right back to vice city
hell I love most of the game music
and the one's I really don't remember must have been terrible but most game I've played have great scores.

my top three original soundtracks would probably be Mass Effect, Guilty Gear X2, and CoD4, with an honourable mention going to Jon "RealX" Hallur of CCP [http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/music/www/Minmatar004.mp3].

For compilation soundtracks of other people's music, my top three would be Motorstorm, Burnout and Tony Hawks'.

You want a bad soundtrack? Try Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance. Now there's a game that lives up to its name. I mean geez, the other GBA CV games had at least tolerable music... where did they go wrong with this one?
in terms of compositions it's not bad, the quallity is surely lacking and it sounds like a throwback to the NES sounds. and they went wrong because they did not knew how to make a graphicall good game with good audio, the GBA has no real sound hardware so all audio takes up space on the cart. But they set everything right with Aria of sorrow.

Most of the pre-DS Castevania games had kickass music, 'Symphony of the Night' in particular. 'Tales of the Abyss' has a stunning soundtrack, along with 'Shadow Hearts' (and SH: Covenant). 'BioShock's' soundtrack was beautifully fitting.

And the 'Guilty Gear' series. Fucking hell. So good.

lol most of us do. :p but most of us are too busy not realizing that most game and film scores are classical (or licenced or have some crazy catchy techno music).

Good Soundtracks
Mega Man
Devil May Cry
Guilty Gear

Bad Soundtracks
Soul Calibur 2 (Some of the music is good, but most of it is bland, and kind of unsuited for fighting)

Good Soundtracks:
Devil May Cry - it's just either creepy or atmospheric
Devil May Cry 3 - that soundtrack's just fun to listen to
MGS as a series has some of the greatest music ever, especially the main theme and the title song from Snake Eater
FFVII has some fantastic tunes as well.

Bad Soundtracks:
Guitar Hero Hell no!
Nah, the Soul Calibur games aren't great for their music, like the Tekken games
Prince of Persia: Warrior Within has some crap music, for the most part.

Final Fantasy VIII - Liberi Fatali was an awesome song (Mostly as an example, Final Fantasy as a series tends to have fantastic music)

Chrono Cross - Has one of the best overall soundtracks I have ever heard

Guilty Gear - In a game centered on music they really went all out to make a soundtrack that drove home the style and feel of the game and they did a fantastic job, I'm personally a fan of Holy Orders (Be Just or Be Dead) and Awe of She.

Metal Gear Solid - Again, has always had a solid soundtrack. Harry Gregson Williams is one of, if not my favorite video game composer. His theme song saved Metal Gear Slid 2 for me and he really completes the feeling of an epic story, especially in Metal Gear Solid 4.
