I've noticed that when it comes to free roam games that let you play how you want (like Fallout,) people usually opt to play the evil guy. I have never understood this. Whenever I try to be evil in a game like that it just never feels right. I always play the good guy in games like Fallout and Fable. Even in GTA, I do my best not to kill civilians. So someone please explain: What's so good about being bad?

OMG I thought it was just me. I have some weird complex that I can't stand to be mean to NPCs, which makes me always take the good guy route, even when I try to be bad.

I feel better knowing I'm not alone.

I guess cause its easier, atleast usually. When you evil you can mow people down all you want, but being good usually requires you watch you fire.

Nothing, and I play like that too.

I actually try to be a good guy, too. I just feel bad when I do bad stuff in Fallout or other RPG's. However in GTA IV.....well I might have to experiment with not killing civilians but most of the time they're just tire tread fodder.

It is easier to finish the game when you disregard the outcome of your actions. Fable, I went bad off the start because I could just kill anything that moved, where as being good, you had to choose carefully when to attack something. Plus, it is funnier being bad, no one likes a goody-goody.

Actually I think more people play as a character that is closest to themselves, for example they would choose options that they themselves would do in real life. But for the people that do go bad it's usually because they want to experience the other side so to speak, and act out their darker fantasies. or it's for achievements

It would have been a good idea to have a poll

We live 'good' every day of our lives, in the safe world of a videogame where no one is actually harmed, sometimes it's interesting to try the other way. To give Moira a face full of mini-nuke just because she's annoying, make the villagers in Fable 2 run in terror, or to steal everything of value that you can lay your hands on in Oblivion. Although sometimes I feel compelled to be good in a game too, even though I was curious, I still haven't managed to convince myself to harvest any of the little sisters in Bioshock, every time I think about I go "wow... now I feel like an ass".

Despite being made of sunshine, lollypops and righteous queer rage in real life, I have a laugh that would suit any number of evil villains.

And sometimes it's nice to be able to cackle for really evil reasons!

Also playing evil is more fun.

It's a game where you can kill innocents, blow up cars, demolish buildings, and generally run riot... unless you're a good guy in which case a large chunk of the game may as well not exist. Pointless.

That said, I usually play good the first play through the game.

I can't play evil. Inuked Magaton and felt awful. Too soft I guess. Even KOTOR, knowing full well the Sith are way cooler than Jedi, I still couldn't bring myself to do it.
Wet or what?!

I enjoy playing the goody two shoes, if you go around shooting every single thing that moves you're more likely to run out of ammo quicker... unless they have ammo on them when you loot their corpses, but whatever.
I know a few people who are evil because they don't like humanity in general so it's nice to take out some of the population, if only virtually.
Others just like to giggle at someone's brains being a lot more out of their skull and over the floor than it should be.

I only like bad guy choices in games when they let me see what would happen if I had played differently so I can do it the right way later. I also think that the AK-47 robot character in KotOR was an annoying one note joke so I am probably out of synch with many gamers who love the bloody thing.

I'm the same, I try and play good just cos...well, I dunno, I like playing good :)
But to answer your question I think it's because we westerners live in a society where you're tied down by laws and regulations for pretty much every aspect of living. Then all of a sudden you're in a world where you can butcher a small family and kill anyone who tries to stop you. It gives people a sort of simulation of a fantasy life without rules. That's what I think, anyway.

A lot of the time being evil is just easier in video games. In Fallout 3 you could be good and please everyone you came across, or simply kill them instead.

i can't speak for everyone, but for me it's because it's just too damn easy to be bad, and hard to be good. fable 2 for example. becoming evil is as easy as slaying a mass amount of people, running from/killing guards and stealing stuff. but to be good you have to save people, be nice and help with things, which takes twice as long as isn't worth the effort. so why bother? unless you really wanna be good, just be evil for the sake of simplicity!

Room for one more?

No matter what I originally plan my character to be like morality-wise, I always, ALWAYS wind up being the paragon of justice and decency. It's a force of habit. It's still fun, though, so I don't intend to change that.

When I play a game like Fallout 3, I'm always good the first time, since being good is what actually feels right to me, and most people...I hope.
But I will try playing as an evil sod aswell.
