On the list of things that The Secret World cribs quite liberally and proudly from movie horror was one of my favorites - this guy:
Being a fan of 90s horror movies, I recognized this guy right away as the Cthugha from the Relic and kicking his ass the first time was EPIC! I loved the whole "evolution as a weapon" plotline and turning the monster into something both familiar and grotesque, while becoming a semi-common trope after Mimic the same year, had not yet become stale.

One of my guilty pleasures. It follows Jaws almost beat for beat, but that's fine.
The Kothoga is also a very solid design that remains threatening even after its reveal. I like to imagine this is the type of prey the Predator would hunt on its homeworld.
What always puzzled me was how the corpse of that decapitated dog handler suddenly teleported to the new exhibit in mere minutes.
I mean, did the Kothoga just rush over there after it killed that dude and drop it down on everyone as a prank? Was it just snickering up in the rafters as everyone was trampling over eachother in a panic?
Great gory monster fun though.

I love this movie. It's weird but there's just something about The Relic that I just love. It looks very dark indeed, but it all just works for me. I have it on DVD and I think it looks fine. Didn't know it was on Blu-ray though. Gotta pick that up now.

Wait wait wait, back it up a second. Did you JUST criticize the monster being able to pull stealth out of its ass because it's supposed to be wheezing all the time, when just a couple of weeks ago you were defending Jurassic Park 3 for pulling the same "noisy creature is suddenly stealthy" BS because "it was an awesome scene" before you went on a black and white tangent about realism? So which is it? It's okay when you're sticking-up for the movie, but not okay when you're looking for a flaw to nitpick?
loved the books, up to the last of the agent Penderghast series. The last book of the series felt kinda sequelly, but The Reliquary was a great ride!
This was one of the rare times when I thought the movie was actually better than the book.
-To start, the movie completely dropped Agent Pendergrast. Some people love his character, but I don't understand why: he's basically every cliche of 'mysterious eccentric FBI agent who happens to be an expert in literally everything" rolled into one.
-There's a scene in the book where, with absolutely no description given or any sort of action sequence presented, the Kothuga kills like 17 SWAT guys. I know it's supposed to be a bad-ass Monster, but 17 heavily armed guys?! It's not friggin Godzilla. That really killed any belief I had when D'Agosta eventually ends up killing it in the book.

saw this movie on tv. actually liked it. hiding the monster until the end was good because it did keep you on edge and guessing what that thing is.

well, you made me order the movie. my store didnt have it so they ordered it in. surprisingly they have to order the dvd from the US. good thing i have a code free player. i live in hong kong, so the dvd code is 3. next week i can enjoy this movie again. good things its cheap too.

I was lucky enough to see The Relic in theaters, and I absolutely loved it. Even went to see it a 2nd time when it stayed in the local theater for a while. There are a lot of small details I remember not noticing until the second time, like the scientist/anthropologist dropping his camera and not caring after being exposed to the fungus, while the same character had been very worried about his camera getting damaged at the very start.
Tom Sizemore did an awesome job as a grumpy cynical cop who finds himself dealing with an unexpected horror. Although it's been a while since I watched it, I remember really liking both Penelope Ann Miller's and Linda Hunt's performances, and also really liking the way their characters were written.
