Deadly Creatures for the Wii. There aren't enough games where you play as a tarantula or a scorpion. The game had an awesome atmosphere, premise, and setting and all, but it was just so... Buggy. Also, the controls could've been made so much simpler and more streamlined.
LOL.... a game where you play as a tarantula or scorpion is buggy.... :)
It's less funny when you have the task of eliminating all enemies before you can advance and one of the enemies is suddenly sucked into a wall and you can't kill it or when you climb to a very high location and loose your footing when the game refuses to recognise the platform as solid :|

Bioshock, unique gameplay ideas in an interesting world, but the gameplay was broken worse than MW2's multiplayer and the main unique feature (plasmids) were mere gimmicks and useless in every sense of the word.
How were they useless? It's been awhile since I played the original Bioshock but I didn't find them useless at all, there were times I was low on ammo, plasmids to the rescue.
Which plasmids were you using. The one that stuns enemies and does no damage while his eight buddies rip you apart, the one that does very very little damage and doesn't even begin to distract the enemy, or the other one that does no damage and only stuns the enemy while his eight buddies tear you apart? And that's not including the rediculous lack of resources (Slient Hill 2 gave you more ammo), the worst hit detection I've ever seen, and basic mooks that can take more hits than an M1 Abram tank (and that's with antipersonell rounds).

Elemental: War of Magic.

It had the perfect idea. Wonderful concepts of mixing RTS with RPG. Then it was released, almost unplayable to due bugs, multiplayer disabled due to being to bugged (this is EXACTLY like saying "here, buy our unfinished game"), and even the patches haven't helped, despite promises of miracles from Stardock.

KotOR II

Incomplete, but still a great game. Sure, there were broken quest lines, but what was there was fun. And it ended terribly... Seems to be their business model, though...
Beaten to it. I had fun with it, but so much potential wasted...
If you haven't yet, replay Kotor 2 with the Restored Content Mod. It's a whole new experience and, gasp, the ending actually makes sense!

Anyway, I'm going to have to go with:

Dragon Age: Origins

Bear with me. I liked DA and think it had quite a few damned good ideas, I just also happen to think the game had the potential to be so much better! Combat for example was atrocious. Rather than using a Baldur's Gate style system of combat, it felt more like I was playing a singleplayer MMO with the 'tank drawing aggro' and the dps 'ccing' the mobs so the healer could keep the tank up. In MMO that combat system works well because it's individuals playing each role are forced to work together. Teamwork and cooperation make the otherwise simplistic mechanics entertaining. Not so when its a singleplayer game.

I also would have liked the Origins system to play a more heavy role throughout the game. It really felt like once you did your unique 'intro' the game continued the exact same regardless of your origins and race. I would have preferred more long-lasting consequences to your decisions in the start, rather than just the occasional cute 'cameo' from characters you met from the intro later on in the game.

Still, good game. I just think it could have been better!

Give it time. People tend to forget Galactic Civilizations 2 wasn't exactly brilliant on release either, but now is easily one of if not *the* best 4x strategy game on the market.

Hopefully history will repeat itself here, because Elemental has a shit ton of potential and I'd hate to see that wasted.

SPORE.

That should, I think, end the thread. But I'm probably exaggerating ;).
God damn, did you see the video he released on spore for 2004? It had SOO MANY FEATURES including the ability to make a water based creature, it was generally more realistic and had better animations. Space Travel and Combat were massively better.

Then it turned into a kiddy fun time game.

Legendary had an awesome concept. I love FPS's and myhtology, so the two together would be awesome.. THEY. JUST. DO. IT. WRONG!

OT: Damnation has one of the coolest premises in recent memory. They just fucked up so damn badly

Final Fantasy XII

First we'll have a large world to play with. (Okay.) We'll make it a part of a history of a world we've played with before. (..all right) Lots of big juicy plot right out of a lengthy fantasy tome. ( :D) We'll have really good voice actors this time! :)D!) We'll start the story from your main character being in prison for having been accused of killed the king. (Dude, that's awesome!)

The combat's going to be really REALLY different though, but you'll get used to it even if you have never played an online MMO before. (Uh...okay? I'll give it a try.) We're going to have a grid where you build things on your characters like FFX (okay?) only unlike the sphere grid, you won't have any idea what you're going for until you uncover it, thereby wasting precious points on crap you don't want. (wait, what?) You'll also have to grind like no one's business (dammit) be forced to go on hunts in order to get ANY other arrows and ammo other than the basics and any decent money (WHY?), go for hours on end without hearing any story elements at all, have lots of "important" story points told to you rather than you see them (ffft, Balthier). Oh and that neat idea for the beginning? We're scrapping that and some whiny kid with his muscle tone that looks like its tattooed on will be the main character who won't really have a point with the story after the first few events.

Ugh. Such high hopes, so disappointing.

Its not worth any money at all. If you find it for $1 buy it, any higher, no.

I'd have to go with:
Lost Planet 2
Red Faction: Guerilla
And Just Cause 2, I dunno, it just didn't feel complete to me.

Fallout: New Vegas - Despite champing at the bit to get hold if it, it took a long time to finally "grip" me. If I thought Fallout 3 offered so much more than I was used to in a game, FNV was determined (and rightly so!) to add to it. Aside from the usual bugs (and an annoying amount of crashes), nearly all the crafting menus seem to be bugged.

It just seems daft that they put so much time and effort into making a massive and varied world to explore, letting us do more stuff and changing several things for the better, only to cock up something so relatively simple as a barter menu.

I can only speak for the PC version but the campfire, workbench, reloading bench and Lucky 38 suite upgrade menu's all spaz out and need to be exited and re-entered way too many times.

That said, there is a "fix" for the Lucky 38 suite upgrade terminal menu issues and it's so simple!

Activate the console, choose to upgrade the suite (it's the only option) and when the menu appears, the terminal will fade-out a little to give the menu focus. All you have to do is click on the terminal's "power" button (even though it's out of focus it is still active) - the terminal will close but the menu will stay open and should work properly!

There are many other bug reports flooding in and, somewhat ironically, I couldn't add the ones I found on the Wikia page because there was a scripting error on it! I'm guessing Bethesda and/or Obsidian are being flooded with the bug reports too and yet already I see the first DLC will be available soon? If I were them I would work on ironing out the bugs before making the game bigger! Of course they wont do this because bug-fixes cost money rather than make money but they really should fix what they have made, first. Word of mouth counts for a lot, you know?

GUN was also a classic case of "great idea, shit implementation". Again it was minor things that could have been easily avoided. For starters the story continuity was fucked, making us all think that Colton White was suffering from premature ageing syndrome. So much effort was put into realising a beautifully rendered "Wild West" environment although, due to limitations, the scenery changes were somewhat...compressed. Also, the score is still the finest music I have ever heard in a game and that's a pretty large boast, not to mention a rather fine cast of voice actors.

Sadly the game (fun as it was!) was marred by the wonky timeline / continuity and rushed storyline. Certain parts of it really did jerk from one arc to the next and I couldn't help but wonder if parts of it had to be cut to meet deadlines or something.

The most glaring is when you are appointed as a lawman of Empire. I expected several law-enforcement missions but on your very first outing, the law is exposed as corrupt and the Sherrif / mayor a mere pawn of the game's main antagonist. In the space of twenty minutes of gameplay, I'd gone from barely making it to Empire after Indians attacked the wagon I was travelling on, becoming a lawman, raiding a farmstead, finding out I was being "played like a fiddle", getting caught by the baddy, breaking out of jail and joining the resistance.

It is my fond hope (although I recognise it as being very unlikely) that someone takes GUN, fixes all the issues, makes the game world bigger (without changing the overall look, which was PERFECT), adds more to the story and side missions (maybe introducing faction-loyalty like in FNV) and give us more reason to explore the sandbox element. Just so long as they remember one golden rule: Do NOT alter the soundtrack!

Exactly! It was WELL Worth the $5 I got it for, and I enjoy popping it in and exploring the world. It really doesn't deserve all the hate it gets. People expect AAA all the time, every time. They never get the chance to experience a diamond in the rough.
Yep, I was an early buyer who paid full price, but I think because it came out close to Oblivion everyone was expecting it to be just like that. I think my favourite feature was being able to combine similar weapons to make a better one. Mean that less loot was wasted.

Street Fighter 4 (and SSF4).
They've bet on "It's pretty" to sell the game, while sticking with the concept that it should have a cast of main characters which are better than the others ones. This is why SF3 did poorly - Capcom admitted that they toned down Elena, Alex, Sean (etc) for Ken, Ryu, and Chun-li's sake, and that's why it did poorly. The best in the franchise is Super Street Fighter 2 and they know this because it's the one acclaimed for being the most balanced, and we know they know becaue it's got a HD remake and is availible on X-box live.

Yes, they're still tewaking SF4, but balance is not what's first and foremost in their minds because they have the mindset that the 'rookie' characters like Makoto SHOULD perform poorly. This may make sence from a storytellig point of view, but if Capcom wants to make a game that's focusing on the story they can make an RPG like another Breath Of Fire game, and should try to make a fighting game what a fighting game should be.
