I've had a fever lately and the only cure is more cowbell some country music.

I don't even know if I'll like it, I've only heard the odd couple of country songs over the years (and my first exposure to it that I can truly remember was on the fucking Simpsons for God sake) but I remember always loving the kind of strong beat and rhythm that the genre. So does anyone here have any particular suggestions of which artists/albums/songs I should try to get my ears on?

I'd prefer more modern stuff but I'm not opposed to going back to some classics, if anyone could tell me any.

Heres a good country song:

It's actually the last country song I enjoyed (and this was released in '05.)

Edit: Here's a favorite from when I was a kid:

Basically anyting by Johnny Cash I reckin:

Also try Seasick Steve, who probably has one of the best titles for an album I've ever heard.

The only country that doesn't claw at my ears and make me reach for a hammer to destroy the radio, is a bit of Johnny Cash.
Everything else gets hammered.

I've been listening to a fair bit of Dierks Bentley lately.

As an example:

Gotta love that banjo.

Music scene today needs more of that.

DISCLAIMER:
Please don't crucify me, I listen to Heavy, Progressive, Trance and Classical as well.

Based on that one song I want their entire discography. Yeah I'm going to listen more of them to see if they're consistently awesome, but god damn I love that song already.

Same with this guy. Saw him on Top Gear a long while back and always told myself I was going to look up his music but I never get round to it... oh the wasted years...

Not so much pure country, but Keith Urban is still fantastic. His older work was more country I feel, but he's slid away from it somewhat. Either way, phenomenal musician.

Gram Parsons.

Although the dude hated the alt. country label he was given.
Yeah Gram would have been one I'd recommend, I love that blue-eyed gospel sound he has.

You should go back to the roots though, cause then you'll find Hank Snr.

Always liked Kinky too, even if a lot of Americans don't seem to get him.
