Ok, so I just got a new computer and finally figured out how to get dosbox to cooperate with it. I thought I'd start a discussion on good DOS games and get some ideas as I am now looking to journey into the murky past of my extreme youth and play some old dos games!
Anyways, I'll start off this discussion. My favorite dos game that I can remember ever playing is Sam and Max Hit the Road. I loved their quirky humor and the game was all over genius. Unfortunately I have not found a working copy of it floating the interwebs :(

Hugo 1, led to hours of frustration trying to get the damn guy to do what I wanted him too. Was very entertaining though.

The whole Wing Commander series, hard to do without a joystick tho. Elder Scrolls 1 and 2, Bethesda has released them as freeware. Earthsiege and Mechwarrior 2's I loved as well.

Anything by LucasArts from the early 90s, like Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, TIE Fighter, Full Throttle. Under a Killing Moon, Curse of Monkey Island.

X-COM, you can get it on steam and it comes packaged with DOSbox, so you don't need to fiddle about with any of the settings.

Prince of Persia 1 & 2 are awesome, Wolfenstein/Doom are most likely my favourite though.

Commander Keen was good, although I don't really like the first any more, I like whichever is the one where there is a castle level of some sort... That's the vaguest description possible.

Skyroads was fun, could get bloody hard though but I was really good at that as a kid.

Cyber Dogs, a top down shooting game where you just kill everything for money to get more weapons was good, it was also co-op which is why I played it so much with a friend of mine.

The only games I played on the computer as a child was Where in the World is Carmen San Diego, Cross Country Canada, and this one where you ski downhill & a yeti eats you.

... I have no idea if they're dos games or not. x_x

Commander Keen is one of my favorites. The original Duke Nukem is also pretty good, as it was before he spurted jets of gluey testosterone over the faces of submissive woman.

Let's see, what hasn't been mentioned yet... Master of magic. Nethack. Dark Sun. Can't think of any more, most of the games I played have already been mentioned.

Can't believe I forgot the Duke, and other games like it such as Bio Menace.

I'm surprised and disappointed no one has mentioned Jazz Jackrabbit yet either.

Quite possibly even better than Duke.

Magic Carpet 2. An absolute beast of a game, with the most deceptive cover and manual art you will ever see in any video game.

I was always a fan of the Sierra adventures. The original Quest for Glory is one of my favorite games to this day, and I have a particularly soft spot for Space Quest III as well.

Jazz Jackrabbit, DukeNukem 2 and especially, Tyrian 2000 - possibly one of the best games ever.

Commander Keen, Sam and Max, anything from Apogee...

Oh heck, I'll /thread this.

My favorite is a strange puzzle game called Clone. You solve the puzzles while moving all your clones at the same time. Use the link to find it, it's great!

System shock? Really? no-one's mentioned system shock?
Ok... I'll say Sam and Max Hit the road also, Day of the tentacle, Full throttle, Escape from Monkey Island (or was it treasure?).
