Crackdown!
The original was great, one of my favourite sandbox games of all time.
The sequel, however, was released three years later, and somehow managed to be a major step backwards.

Final Fantasy X's Sequel, Final Fantasy X-2.
I think the only way to play the game is to tell yourself is a just what would happen if a fanfic writer made a game and it's all better.

Edit: There has to be especial hate for a game that in its concept (If you get 100 percent), manages to derail the drama of the game BEFORE IT.

I haven't played DMC 2 yet but I heard from true fans, they pretend it doesn't exist. Is that true?

Perhaps not the absolute worst sequel, but it sure as hell wasn't even close to the original. I'm talking about KOTOR 2, of course.
Believe it or not, I hear some people think that the game was actually better than the first.

*shudder*
I'm one of those people. It's also my favorite game of all time. Kreia is the best written character in video game history.

If that was a shudder, maybe I just gave you a seizure? I kind of hope so.
Kreia is the best written character? Kreia?
I thought she was an annoying psychotic ***** and I enjoyed every minute of the battle where I got to destroy her. She wasn't well written, she was SUPPOSED to be one of those grey-area characters that was leaning a little more towards dark then light, but instead was a completely evil witch who was deluding herself.

However, I thought that Atton was a very cool character. He actually WAS a grey-area characer.

I still like Kotor 1 better because of the story. I mean, no story has ever surprised me ever since. Kotor 2 isn't that bad though, just nothing can compete with 1.

I just wanted to point out that there are those of us who feel that KOTOR 2 was better. Thank you for your time.

OT:
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time was a classic! And Warrior Within was a total pile of shit.

I'm going to say Left 4 Dead 2. It was an okay game, but I just can't warm to the characters, and the atmosphere was no-where near as good as the first. The addition of melee weapons and extra guns was a good step forward, as well as the varied finales, but I think it was a little ambitious to call it a sequel. Perhaps if Valve spent more time on making it, then it would've been good, but I don't think a year is enough to make a decent sequel.

Might be an obvious choice, but I think grand theft auto 4 was a huge let down. It sapped so much of the fun away and replaced it with real life grit...

I DON'T WANT REAL LIFE GRIT WHEN I PUT THE BEATDOWN ON SOME OLD LADY!

Invisible War as some have already said. Bioshock 2. I can't say MW2 as I never like MW.

Battlefield Bad company 1 and 2 (if you were to take them as a sequel to the old battlefield games which were awesome).

Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy... I hated Jaden... I wanted Kyle again.

Metal Gear Solid 2 was a let down slightly, but 3 and 4 were much better.

Thief 3... Oh god. Same engine as Invisible War. I think it's just such a bad game engine that makes it so unbearable (as a game they were still fun).

Sonic 3D... I hated it so. Also, any Sonic game after Sonic Adventures.

Mario Galaxy. In fact, mario after the 64 version... I just never liked the new games.

Resident Evil 5 was incredibly dissapoint after the stellar 4 (how could they lose such inspiration).

Command and Conquer Red Alert 3. Not terrible, but it was lacking and not as fun as 2.

Legacy of Kain Defiance: Story was great, but the gameplay losts it's edge... too mainstream actiony and took away from the aesthetics of games like Soul Reaver.

You know, I could just keep going so I'll leave it at that.

EDIT: OH YEAH... turok 3 and 4... my god what a huge dissapointment, I know the originals weren't fantastic, but I really enjoyed them. Do they even have a fan base after 4?

Huh, I didn't think it was bad at all, except for the hilariously wonky ragdoll physics.

Bad sequels though...Deus Ex 2, Bioshock 2, to a degree (even though overall I enjoyed the game) Mass Effect 2. All of these I disliked for the same reasons, dumbing everything down for the console tards.

Jak 3. Don't get me wrong, i thought the game was fun, just wasn't as good as Jak 2. Ratchet Deadlocked wasn't very good. Only reason why i played it was because the story was co-op and i played it with my brother a lot.

The story is ass and the characters are grating as hell, but the combat system was pretty solid. It was dressed up in that horrific "Dress Sphere" system, but having different classes which you could hot swap between as well as improve in various ways of your choosing worked damn well.

It's just a shame the story/writing was so very incredibly awful.
Pretty much this. The battle system was probably the best. Hell, even the premise wasn't so bad: a world torn between two factions due to a vacuum of power, a vengeful ghost with a superweapon at his beck & call to bring the world to a karmic death, a woman searching for her lost lover. X-2 should have been it's own Final Fantasy, but Square wanted to bank all that money on Spirits Within. Now we have spin-offs out the a** just to make a quick buck. . . great, now I'm rambling.

Cheetahmen 2. Take me seriously here. The first was the best game ever made, but the sequel could of been as good as the first if not for limited quantity.

I would have to say Lost Planet 2. The first, while by no means perfect, was still a very solid game. The sequel, however, was just terrible!

Capcom really has been dropping the ball alot lately when it comes to delivering solid follow-ups to their franchises.
