You know what? Let's do something real simple. Name a bunch of games you like. I don't care how many or why - point out some games that you think set the standard for "Good." And I don't mean Good as in "Good but not Great" - just Good as in "you enjoyed it."
I feel like there's a lot of negativity on these forums lately. There's a lot of decrying games as overhyped, the product of corporate scheming, or Ruined Forever. I guess some spontaneous unchecked praise would get my spirits up.
Halo 3/Reach.
Call of Duty WaW.
Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth 2.
Left 4 Dead 1/2 for the first time through.
AVP, 2010.

Deadrising 1/2.
Pokemon Ruby.
Pokemon Heart Gold.
Minecraft.
As bread-and-butter as they get kind of question, I like it.
Kingdom Hearts re: Coded, Prof. Layton and the Lost Future (or "Unwound future" for Americans, I think), and Assasins Creed: Brotherhood. I have more of course, but 3 is my faveorite number.

I'm sure I could think of more if I had the time, but for everyone's sake I'll stop here. As for the games that are of particular note, I'd pick the following:
Super Mario Bros. It's the first video game I remember playing. I was four years old at the time, and I was entranced. I've never looked back since.
X-Wing. My first PC game that introduced me to the flight/space sim genres. Gameplay mechanics struck the right balance between accessibility and complexity. I always wanted to be a starfighter pilot more than a Jedi anyway, so this was like a dream come true.
Tie Fighter. It improved on X-Wing in every possible way and is easily the best installment in the series. It's the only Star Wars game I've played that dares to challenge the very concept of "Rebels good, Empire bad."
Donkey Kong Country. The graphics still hold up today, the platforming mechanics were rock solid, and it was chock full of secrets.
Donkey Kong Country 2. It took everything that made the first game great and made it even more awesome.
The Neverhood Chronicles. This claymation masterpiece by Doug TenNapel (creator of Earthworm Jim and the Tick) is one of the funniest games I have ever played. It had a huge impact on my teen years.
Super Smash Bros. It's the ultimate party game. Invite some friends over for some four-player free-for-alls and watch the hilarious pandemonium unfold.
Halo: Combat Evolved. This was the sole reason why I got an Xbox. It had a great story, creative aliens and settings, and was the first console FPS with controls that truly felt natural for me.
Morrowind. Good God, I don't know how many hours I've logged in this game (though I've never actually finished the main quest). The environment and atmosphere still sucks me in just as much as when I first played it. With all sorts of community mods out there, the replay factor is nearly infinite.
Team Fortress 2. Easily the best multiplayer game I've ever played. The visuals style is amazing, gameplay is superb, and the characters are absolutely hilarious. The various free updates are just icing on the cake for me.
Jagged Alliance 2
Batman Arkham Asylum
Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind
Fallout 3
SSB: MELEE
Assassins Creed 2 (1 was also pretty good, but 2 was perfect, except for the feathers thing)
Portal
Close Range ( www.closerangegame.com )
Final Fantasy 12
Jade Empire
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Diablo 2
Tie Fighter
Spider-man, Web of Shadows
Waverace 64
Super Street Fighter IV;
Seems pretty darned balanced, which I think is impressive for a 35 character roster. I also really like the style of it, but that's a more opinionated reason.
Marvel Vs. Capcom 3;
Because sometimes you just feel like punching a guy 30 foot up in the air, then calling Spider-Man and Wolverine in to punch him some more.
Mirror's Edge;
A bit of innovation that I think worked awfully well. Apart from the scenery, I don't have much evidence to back this up...
I have more, these are just the first three that came to mind. The rest obviously aren't good enough.
EDIT:
Ah screw it, I'm not going anywhere, let's have a list.
Both Kingdom Hearts'
