So, I just found out that Steam has a wishlist thing. So I went to populate it, and when looking through the games available, I realize that there are very, very few less-gritty PC blockbusters.
Yeah, there are a fair few of them in the "Indie" or "Adventure" bin, but I'm looking for anyone to suggest PC titles to me that are, well...
Along the lines of Zelda or Beyond Good and Evil- good, deep games that aren't all grit and misery and uber-violence.

OMG, they made more of these games? I haven't seen or heard any of it since the original 'ol game. Are they any good?

Ever played anything in the Monkey Island series? It's the happiest/deepest thing I can find on my list that doesn't involve grit. Otherwise, give the indie bin a chance; with some of the deals to be found on steam for them, you could find quite the diamond in the rough.

Of the sequels I've only yet played Armored Princess but it has all the bright shiny hilarity of the original.

If you liked the original you'll definitely enjoy Armored Princess. I see no reason why Crossworlds won't continue being amazing, it seems like the developers aren't changing anything major with the formula.

I too would recommend Monkey Island it's a fantastic series, you might also like in Sam and Max. I also loved Darwinia and Super Meat Boy though they do fall into the indie category.

Psychonauts counts for the first half or so.

Just Cause 2 is perfect for this, though.

My username is "Erana." Its safe to say I'm fairly familiar with Adventure games of the 90's (and their sucessors) And while I'll be a Sierra girl 4 evur *insert fangirlish enthusiasm*, I'm familiar with SCUMM games.
I'm not saying I'm not interested in indie/adventure games, but right now, I'm looking for the big-budget RPG/Action experience with a less brown and gritty facade.
Sorry for not being more clear in the OP.

Wow, a double post being four minutes apart. That might just be a record.

Damn you, internets! Or Escapist computer machines, whichever caused this.

Then my alternate "Big Budget" RPG/Adventure that I must mention (being the bioware nerd that I am) would be Dragon Age and Mass Effect. While the former may be considered hyper-violent by some, both offer a rich storyline and big budget feel without getting "gritty" (a la New Vegas, which I would suggest otherwise).

Deus Ex isn't that gritty, though I wouldn't really call it that "happy" either.

I sooo want Dragon Age; I played it on my sister's incredible computer for a few hours and really really enjoyed everything about it. However, Mass Effect, after probably spending 40 hours of trying to enjoy it, just doesn't do it for me. I have no idea why I don't enjoy it; everything about it should appeal to me. I even loved Kotor, which is practically its big sister.
Go figure.

Was your entire ME experience with the original? Because the second one improves the game on quite a few fronts; otherwise, yeah, pick up Dragon Age. There's enough in that alone to keep you occupied.

Yeah, Deus Ex is pretty hardcore with conspiracy theories, politics, new-age philosophy and transhumanism. All sorts of violence too. Deep, and good, but certainly not "happy". It's a really "cold" atmosphere.

A good game having neither grit nor violence that I can recommend is Audiosurf.

While it also lacks story and is nothing like Legend of Zelda or Beyond Good and Evil, it's great.

Trust me on this and buy it when it's on sale.
