Okay people, just for once, i would like to have a discussion about all the good things that humanity has done. Who else out there is REALLY sick and tired of this constant negativity? Who else is bored to tears with hearing about how doomed we are?

I personally like: Medicine, our thirst for knowledge, our boundless technological potential, the fact that we a have far more good within us than evil, as well as art, music, indoor plumbing, cotton candy, fine cooking and true charity.

Just for once, lets try to have a positive debate. Brighten our day. What are some truly good people, truly good sayings, inventions, institutions and the like.

Okay.... GO!

yeah, but good things are kind of boring. When shit goes wrong, that leads to better stories.

Er..what exactly is the discussion here?. Do you want us to list all the positive things about humanity?. How about the invention of the wheel eh?.

Or the second wheel..coz you know..a unicycle is pretty dull..but the point is humanity is capable of simple and yet remarkable achievements. Through the simple wheel, civilizations were born and took us from the caves to cities to the surface of other planets.

Indeed!. Stephen Fry makes up for all the failings of humanity, he is brilliance in the human form.

The defeat of Nazi Germany.
While the defeat of the Nazis may well be nice, the actual creation of them really counts as something less than positive.

The acceptance that humans are wiping out the planet and the commitment from many to try and eliminate the damage we do to nature. That is something good.

Me. Just look back at our history. We're so not fucked compared to our ancestors it's unbelievable.
We're practically virgins in the historical sense.

I wouldn't go so far as to say they are good (they're, in my mind, neutral, not good or bad) but I definitely agree that the progress we made was amazing.

Truly cool invention?
Well, there's this chip currently in development that allows a certain group of blind people (those that have damaged retinae but a working visual cortex and neuronal connection) to see again!
So far, the chip has 3*3 pixels that allow blind people to see light sources like a window or something.
Now you might say "9 pixels? That sucks!" but I say the basic technology works and now we just need to improve it, make it smaller to allow for more pixels on chips of the same size!
There are loads of other things, of course, but this was the first that came to my mind.

Well, seeing as most of the best things humanity has done have come from britain (tv, jet engines, parliamentary democracy etc)i would say Britain itself is the best thing the world has done

I see people help each other all the time and that makes me feel good. Just yesterday I had a person in my group give his bus pass to another needy group member. It made me feel good to witness that.

The man who invented the first video game gets my support. I think it was Ralph Baer but I can't remember.

True, but. The Nazis were created as an organization which found a convenient blame figure. they rose out of the depression, no one could stop them, they won lots of gold medals at the Olympics. I mean, think about it, they were the ideal society back then. But when they started showing their true colors, the world united against them. I would say that that is actually pretty good.

Yep. But the Nazis were human, and while the people who fought against them were superb ambassadors for the potential of humanity we should remember just how far humans can sink into depravity if we are not vigilant.

Yes, awesome movie, but I'd have to say bacon takes the cake.

Okay, bacon and cake are tied.

XD Too right!

Yes, I guess there are certain people and accomplishments are gems. But we've also done some terrible things, which are more memorable and common

Some people don't have as many flaws as other people!
Well that is about as glass-half-full as I will ever get.
