The defeat of Nazi Germany.
While the defeat of the Nazis may well be nice, the actual creation of them really counts as something less than positive.

The acceptance that humans are wiping out the planet and the commitment from many to try and eliminate the damage we do to nature. That is something good.
True, but. The Nazis were created as an organization which found a convenient blame figure. they rose out of the depression, no one could stop them, they won lots of gold medals at the Olympics. I mean, think about it, they were the ideal society back then. But when they started showing their true colors, the world united against them. I would say that that is actually pretty good.
Yep. But the Nazis were human, and while the people who fought against them were superb ambassadors for the potential of humanity we should remember just how far humans can sink into depravity if we are not vigilant.
Oh I'm not denying that, and i am not denying that there is evil in us. What i want people to realize, is that if we set our minds to it, then we hold far more good than we do evil. I do agree though, and you sir, are a smart guy.

No I ain't. :D

What really lifts my spirits though is stories like this:-

It's easy to help those who you know will appreciate your help. But to help that which is totally helpless, without any thought of reward or of recognition, who you know mightn't realize that you are attempting to help, is something that truly is good.

Yeah, but the rise of Nazi Germany was caused by humans, so I'm not sure if that would qualify as something good. Plus, if the nazis wouldn't have started the war, nobody would have done anything about the treatment of the Jews and of the disabled, etc.

OT, I would say science.

The saving of the Xolotl. Awfully sorry if I spelt that wrong, but they are fascinating creatures, and they are helping us a lot with stem-cell research.

I personally wish to thank the parents of Stephen Fry for creating him, and you should too.
Thank you Marianne and Alan we are all humbled by your creation! Even though he may be a bit of a bipolar ex-druggie he is still the pinacle of humanity of today.

BUBBLE WRAP!
Ahem.
Whoever thought it would be a good idea to eat thinly-sliced pig on a sandwich deserves a medal. Or a hearty pat on the back.

And for all you hippies out there: we DO own this planet.
No, bacteria do, humans are nothing. Sure we look all big, but when we die out, it isn't a problem for most of the other inhabitants of this planet. Now if bacteria died out, say goodbye to life on earth.

Anyway, good things eh, well anyone working for a better life for someone else gets a thumbs up from me. Especially medicine makes me stand in awe.

Also chocolate. I want to be the eternal love slave of the person that made chocolate for the first time. And no that bitter crap the Aztecs drank doesn't count, yuch.

Okay people, just for once, i would like to have a discussion about all the good things that humanity has done. Who else out there is REALLY sick and tired of this constant negativity? Who else is bored to tears with hearing about how doomed we are?

I personally like: Medicine, our thirst for knowledge, our boundless technological potential, the fact that we a have far more good within us than evil, as well as art, music, indoor plumbing, cotton candy, fine cooking and true charity.

Just for once, lets try to have a positive debate. Brighten our day. What are some truly good people, truly good sayings, inventions, institutions and the like.

Okay.... GO!
You sir, are a champion amongst mortals.

I agree 100% (NOT 110% because thats gay and impossible :)) I grow tired of people complaining how bad we are. I LOVE HUMANITY!!

"Oh a man murdered this person in a brutal way, mankind is evil."
"But say that only 1 in 200 people murders someone for no reason... then that means 199 people haven't done anything wrong..."

Mike (Heart) Humans. lol.

You're entitled to your opinion but I have too much pride in humanity for my opinion to change but I do see where you are coming from but consider this: We control most of what happens on this planet, animals, forestry and so on, we also could wipe out all life on this planet if we wanted to and to be honest the only thing bacteria have over us is their numbers.
O no, this isn't just an opinion, it's a fact. You have all the pride you want, but life goes on without us if we die out. Bacteria can survive without us (not all bacteria though, like those newly evolved ones that live on nylon, nylon is a man-made nylon, without nylon: bye bye nylon-eating bacteria) but we cannot survive without bacteria. How are you going to digest your food without bacteria? You can't. Numbers? Sure, they have that, but they're at the basis of the most basic of life's processes, they are the starting point, they are vital. We are not.

Also, we don't control nearly as much as we think we do. Sure we we can wipe out some species (we cannot extinguish life on earth, we simply can't, we can destroy a lot of creatures but especially bacteria will still live on somewhere) destroy forests, affect the climate, but that's all short-term work, but it's peanuts. We are defenceless against earthquakes, tornadoes and volcanoes. We cannot change the continents, we cannot shift oceans. We
re a powerful species, that's for sure, we can do the same as say, a pretty large hunk of rock hurtling down from space, fantastic isn't it? (yes that was sarcasm) But ruling the earth? Sorry, but nope. The earth is already around for about 4.5 billion years, maybe more, us Homo Sapiens Sapiens about 200.000 years. Opinions have nothing to do with this, reality simply isn't as nice as you want it to be.

I have to agree with the assassinator on this. Human activity might be bad for specific groups of organisms, but every single time man hits nature she comes right back at us. Look at the sparrow campaign or DDT. Nature is considerably more than humans can possibly even comprehend, let alone be.
