I'm looking for some new music to listen to, particularly jazz.

I've been getting into jazz recently and currently my collection of this genre is rather low. In fact, I only have 2 records that I listen to regularly, but I'm looking to expand this collection and that's where I need the help of my Escapist friends since I know a good few of you are jazz fans.

My current favorite jazz musician is Dave Brubeck, so something similar to that would be nice

And if you don't know who Dave Brubeck is, get your fucking head out of your ass. He's probably the most recognizable and most talented jazz artist.

I have the same problem, love jazz but have none. I will place this convenient link to a smooth jazz station. Maybe that will help you discover something.

Personally I think my favourite Jazz singer is Ella Fitzgerald. All of her songs are soothing and relaxing to listen to and her voice is just beautiful.

Medeski Martin and Wood, Mingus, Glen Miller, Wally Schnalle, Ellington, Marsalis and The Seatbelts are the ones that come to mind immediately, but my personal favorites would be Mingus and MMW.

And in alphabetical order at that! :p

If you're looking for an album in particular, I advise Kind of Blue. Try to find the revised edition, the sound quality is much better.

Sorry, that honor belongs to Miles Davis. Kind of Blue is the sort of album you're required to own.
I do like Dave Brubeck though.
Some of the other standards (and for good reason): John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, Julie London, and I could go on and on.

louis armstrong would be more recognizable than Brubeck...

But im a big fan of the be-bop, hard, modal and free jazz sort of era, so im not sure my tastes in jazz could help you out... Cecil Taylor, Coleman, Coltrane and Davis FTW.

someone recommended kinda of blue by Davis, and yes, yes and piels of yes, this is a great albumn!! and is a must for any jazz fan!! (I love "so what", so damn much!!)

I also like duke ellington (I mentioned him seperate as he isnt in the same era) and with 1000+ recordings of him, it shouldnt be hard to find something you like :p

I wonder how many people are copying and pasting those huge lists.

Upon further review, Count Basie should get the head out of ass honor.

My education in jazz must be severely lacking, because the only thing artists that come to mind are glen miller and woody hermann.

EDIT: oh, and the seatbelts of course, they did the opening and closing songs for cowboy bebop.
