What are some games that work well on a netbook, both accounting for sometimes only really being able to use the keyboard as well as the low vertical resolution?

Jagged Alliance 2, The Longest Journey, Sanitarium, Fallout 1 and 2, and Arcanum. All installed on my netbook now, all available from Good Old Games.

XCOM from steam

Sam and Max (I only have Season One on mine.) I have to use a disc for this but you can download these as well.

World of Goo, I bought this on a disc but I'm sure it is available online somewhere.

There are a bunch of Idies and Roguelikes that will have no problem running on your netbook.

Checkout www.GOG.com as everything is DRM free and you can download onto any machine and then transfer it to your netbook.

Edit: I also have the Infinity Engine games installed on mine.

I was going to suggest Escape Velocity Nova, but you need to be able to use a mouse or touchpad to play that effectively. N is fun, but you have to play around with the position and size of the game window to see everything. Star Control 2 is a blast. There's a free PC version that you can get.

What is "N"? Rather hard to google that one.

Incidentally, I never use a mouse or touchpad for any of the EV games.

If it's what I think it is, google "N+".

But I highly, highly advise Torchlight. It's pretty much Diablo, and it has a netbook mode in the options. A very good ARPG with tons of good mods already out.

Edit: It has a demo on Steam though, so you may as well download that, your save from the demo goes over when/if you buy the game as well, so don't worry about having to restart.

Was going to mention this myself. I play it on my laptop (not in netbook mode, as it's sufficiently powerful) and it's quite a good game so far.
It's not a hugely complex game imo, so it's perfect for playing now and again, as there isn't a huge "what was I doing?" with it. Even if you do forget, you have a quest log :D.

There's also puzzle-y type games. Not sure if I tried Eets on my notebook, but imagine it'd work fine. If it will play nice (I think I had it working under XP) and you can find a copy, The Incredible Machine is a game very much in the same vein (and used to be a firm fave when I was younger).

With my laptop (and previously my notebook when I had it) I have a Logitech V470 bluetooth mouse. If you have a bag that can store the charging cable (I found a nice Tech Air bag for my NC10) then it's worth getting one imo. Seems to work well on most surfaces, including my leg and the edge of my laptop lol.

Warcraft 3 works pretty well on a netbook. I have the battle chest at home, and I just used a flash-drive to transfer it to my netbook.

Torchlight's Netbook mode sounds really interesting, but speaking of being Diablo like (I don't want to go through the hassle of transferring ISOs if it won't work), how does Diablo 2 work on a Netbook?

System Shock 2 will run on a netbook - although you have to disable one of your processor cores while at the menu so it crash in the engine. I remember having to rebuild my tower to be beefy enough to play SS2 back in the day... good times.

The original versions of Serious Sam: the First Encounter and the Second Encounter work very well on a netbook. My sister and I play co-op with her using our desktop and me using my mom's Acer AspireOne and, outside of the fact I have to play them in 4:3 resolutions since it's widescreen mode is letterbox only, they work pretty damn well without too much problem if you don't have a multi-core processor (you'll have to force the game to use only one core if you have a multi-core, though).

Also, almost all games that were made before 02/03 will probably run without too much problem on a modern netbook.

A little google trick for you: The use of a plus sign changes everything. Try "N +game" for example, and it will only turn up pages with N and the word game. To add to this, put the thing you're searching for in quotes to narrow the search down even more.

The more you know :D
