System Shock 2's twist felt better pulled off AFTER i knew the twist, and playing Bioshock first. So i have to disagree here.
Wait, what? After the first level Shodan's voice was becoming more electronic. She was already very menacing. I felt like they played their hand too much. Note this is feelings that are over 15 years old but I only played it again a couple of years ago and it was very prominent.

Can someone tell me about b cell? Does the guy only really only like big macho games with guns?
Pretty much, yeah.

Every game he's said he likes, which is about two dozen in total, is a 1st or 3rd shooter of some kind. But only singleplayer ones. I don't think I've ever seen him say anything genuinely positive about any other genre, or any game with a female protagonist, with the sole exception of Portal 2.

Some people take umbrage with his threads because they basically boil down to "Game X I like is the best ever" and seems just excuses to talk about the same handful of games he likes again. He claims to want discussion, but tends to come off as looking for validation for his opinions rather than to engage in any meaningful argument. And then there's the suspicions/accusations of being misogynist and lying about having played certain games.

There you go, quick B-Cell primer.

Do we really need to create threads calling B-cell out? I dunno like reply to his actual comments all you want but this feels weird to me.

This is not a 'call out' thread. It's pretty much the opposite. It's no secret that B-Cell loves System Shock to bits- so news that it's being remastered is news right up his alley. Hence him being named in relation to the news.

Definitely looking forward to play it again. its one of the greatest game ever made but it might be just bit of enhancement and not proper remastered. SS remake and SS3 should be release out soon I hope.

although someone please should make Original Deus Ex remake..

Meh, the controls for SS2 were bad and the game was not properly playtested. Teenage me had to play through twice because at the 2/3 mark, the build I had was unable to advance any further because the game did not tell you that you NEEDED a certain skill (hacking or lockpicking I think) to be at a certain level to advance.

Deus Ex just did it so much better but something about System Shock and the way it handled horror. The way those creepy flesh monsters would mumble things like "Silence the discord...." in that metallic rasp while right behind you....

Bioshock was casual System shock. or rather it was simple shock.
It was streamlined to make it function better. As opposed to Bioshock Infinite streamlining that didn't help gameplay at all

It wasn't streamlined, it was lobotomized. Bioshock is just System Shock 2 with any real challenge removed. (Not to say that SS2 was perfect- it was very easy to screw yourself over by spending skill points on things the game later made useless.)

I'm playing Prey at the moment. It's more complicated, has more skills, greater variety and better built than SS2. I'm stil never even going to look at most of the skills becuase the game doesn't allow it. You have to choose one way or the other. Which is fine for Prey, they built a game around using different skills to do the same thing. SS2 is not. Replaying it made me feeling like sending Levine to design class. People harp on how linear Bishock is. I agree, and so is SS2. You have to do things in order and respawning enemies makes retreading an absolute chore. This also limits how much exploration you can do, in case you walk too far and respawning happens. You hardly get enough mods to fill out one tech tree let alone dabble in some others to try them out.

So, I'm not comparing Prey to SS2 or the Bioshocks. They have terrible designs and Prey shouldn't be insulted like that. It's more like Deus Ex.

Anyway, what has this got to do with lobotomies/ streamlining. SS2 punishes you for making choices as it makes gameplay torturous if you don't pick the right one. Bioshocks lets you readjust to suit the needs of the environment. The upgrade system works with you in Bioshocks and punished you with SS2. Sure, more skills seems great. Utterly pointless if you have no chance of using them. Also, if you going to gate everything by the skills you've saquired, let people respec. Respec in Dark Souls 1 would have changed people lives and let them enjoy it. Instead, there is a community that likes the lore but is distasteful of the gameplay. I'm fine with streamlining if that's how the game is designed.

Which probably means that we have the same information but view it differently.

I've only played SS2 but here's my two cents.

Bioshock kinda lacks the exploratory nature of System Shock. Also lacking in how impactful customization along with much freedom in that regard.

Though System Shock was quite awful in some regards to this. There were utterly useless skills. You could completely lock yourself from progressing if you ran a complete butts build. At the same time IMO, Bioshock went completely too far in the opposite direction where it just kinda gives the impression that there's some customization and RPG gameplay elements, but is really just a linear shooter at its very core.

I'm also not sure how well balanced the Bioshock games are. I definitely exploited the hell out of the fact that I could respawn indefinitely from Vita Chambers. I had the vague feeling in BS1 that I might have been in lots of trouble if I had the Vita Chambers turned off. It didn't feel like I could really avoid getting damaged. BS2 and Infinite felt less bad in this regard, probably because of Plasmids and Weapons being separate rather than having to choose between the two which is armed, so combat felt more fluid.

Granted SS2 has janky ass combat as well and I mostly got past some more 'threatening' enemies through total bad AI exploitation cheese. I decided that smashing the combat robot to death with my laser rapier just led to me taking less damage overall from its death explosion, since it couldn't actually shoot me when I was stuck in its face between its guns. Trying to take it on in a gunfight however, would likely just lead to my demise.

Though I kinda find some charm in older jankier gameplay systems. Which while could completely ruin your progress, could also be exploited in the opposite direction to give you god like powers. I don't think I quite got to that stage in SS2 due to a corrupted save game ruining my run, but I quite enjoyed the absolute nonsense in Morrowind, Fallout 2 and Deus Ex. It felt great when I figured out I could just turn on my leg augs in the Vandenberg Air Force Base, leap off the helipad and destroy all four robots as I landed with my Expert heavy weapons skill.
