Hey. Now summer's here I'm going to be spending a lot of time chilling with mates and there'll probably be an accoustic guitar hanging around. I play so that's no problem. The thing is I like to be that guy that shows off and plays and sings, however I don't know too many songs (being more into hard rock and jazz). So I wondered if anyone knew any good songs to play? I've got things like Tom Petty and Dylan and Bon Jovi, but suggestions would be helpful, cheers!

This song might be up your alley, but I'm just taking a shot in the dark here.

Hey, you said Party...
I like Andrew WK.

May well not be what you want, but this always goes down well with my friends:

The best thing to do would be to transpose your favourite Hard Rock and Metal tracks to accoustic versions... also try it with popular dance tracks! An accoustic version of Get Lucky by Daft Punk would go down a treat, or Swedish House Mafia's Don't You Worry Child!

Whatever you do, DON'T be "that guy" that busts out with Green Day's Time of Your Life.

I'd suggest Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb, though. :3

I don't think there is much better than Lump by The Presidents of the USA. It is THE song to sing whilst hammered on a beach, ironically much better than Dune Buggy as it has a better (and better known) chorus.

Yeah that's the way...

You can hear a lot of Suicide is this...

...but...
if you really want to show off...

I must say with my group of friends there are three sure fire hits...Johnny Horton's Battle of New Orleans, Are You Drinking With Me Jesus?, and BS&T's Go Down Gambling... if everyone has a had a few there is a certain guilty pleasure in banging out The Gambler...

Nothing beats Motörhead when it comes to party music. Acoustic versions would be... intresting to hear.

Well, considering I've already been beaten to the excellent party hard by Andrew W.K. (which no doubt sounds awesome on acoustic guitar). So I guess I'll go serious.

The most important thing to do, is not be one of those douchbag generic hipsters wailing along to wonderwall or something, pretending to be all deep in a 'look how deep I am' kind of way. Don't be a poser, be so awesome that future posers pose like you, and actually have to do a bit more practice.

So I recommend these songs.

Are you 'cosplaying' as the bloke from Motorhead in your profile pic? If not, you should tell people you are.

OT: What's a party song?

I'm going to go with play Neil Young or Feeder. You could always go Cobain and play Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Examples and shit:

Don't be that guy. No one likes that guy.

If you will insist then this should be all the inspiration you need:

If anyone as much as mentions Wonderwall I will reach through the screen and put my foot up someone's ass.
Other than that, I am watching this thread intently for new ideas.

What? I though it was going to be this...
This Andrew WK song...

But, whenever I think of good party songs, you can't go wrong with these...

Just to name a few... (that usually come to mind, in my opinion...)

May require learning how to transfer piano to guitar, but a pretty easy one to do

OK, if I read this correctly you kind of want to have all eyes on you, right? Be the center of attention? That's OK, if you do it the right way. And the right way is very simple, play songs that everybody knows and can sing along to. Bon Jovi is a good start, is there anyone that doesn't know at least the chorus to Livin' On A Prayer or Wanted Dead Or Alive?

But one that's sure to get everybody going, even though most people only knows the chorus and when to clap, you can't go wrong with Wild Rover:

You'll have to excuse me I'm not at my best. I've been out in the bush for a month, and I've been drunk since I left...
You haven't partied until you've partied with 75 drunk and stoned tree planters, partying for the last night of the planting season after 2 months of living in the bush, crapping in overfilling latrines, battling black flies, running from bears and moose, and having been without consistent cell service for 2 months, and everyone is singing "Home for a Rest".

Good times. Good, good times.
