Okay, now I would have said "turn based RPG" but that would have been too broad methinks. I'm looking for (free or otherwise) a PC game similar to Final Fantasy, and is that doesn't exist, a good RPG that ISN'T massively multiplayer. Thanks in advance.

Note: I'll take browser games if they exist, I know of one already.

Try Baldur's Gate. It's an older game, but it's still good.

Fallout 1&2

A bunch of freeware 16-bit looking games (the RPG section at http://www.reloaded.org/index.php)
based on RPG-maker toolsets (the same site has it under utils - or something like that)
Septerra core

Penny arcade games (On the rain slick precipice of darkness)
Neverwinter nights 1&2

A bunch more

I'd say one of the PC Final Fantasy's would be up your alley. Otherwise I don't think there's much for you. Baldur's Gate/Planescape torment, Elder Scrolls, KotOR all fall under the banner of western RPG. But I think The Last Remnant is coming/is on PC, and that's made by Square-enix at least

you can download ps1, ps2, NDS, NES, SNES and Sega emulators on your pc, and if you got a ps3 controler, you can hook it up to your pc and use it to play these emulator games (after you've modified the buttons to work like you like it.

so that way you can play almost any Final Fantasy-ish title there is...

btw Disgaea: hour of darkness is a great jrpg that have intresting and funny charakters, and even though its hard, it a great game.

I never played it myself, but I understand that Anachronox is a PC RPG from 2000(roughly) that combined western and JRPG conventions. I've heard it's great. Maybe something to check out.

Well, none of you have listed it, so I'll go with something that I doubt will be otherwise:

Anachronox.

If you're after something that has a somewhat Final Fantasy-esque feel, Anachronox - a game that has received little to no attention from most - whilst being ever so slightly buggy, and having a somewhat less than spectacular print run (it's the only thing I can attribute to it not really going anywhere by most people's standards) - is a fantastic game. It's got a FF/Chrono Trigger styled combat, and has ridiculously well developed characters. One of those games where you really had to go, 'just a shame they didn't make a sequel', y'know? It's a thought, anyway. Hopefully GOG.com will pick it up soon.

-- Holy crap, that's some kinda coincidence.

I was going to suggest Planscape: Torment because I usually describe it as "Baldur's Gate with Final Fantasy's storytelling and character development." That said, it ends up equating to more than the sum of its parts. If you are looking for a game that really is Final Fantasy by another name on the PC, I don't know of any except emulators :p

Anachronox is awesome, but can be buggy on some systems.

Also try to find Grandia 2 for the pc. It was originally a dreamcast title but was released for the pc in a fairly stable version.

There are some really good freeware JRPG's out there in the style of the SNES Final Fantasies. I suggest you try some of those.

We must've been on some kind of bizarre brain fusion loop.

Final Fantasy 8 was released on PC, though! :)
The control scheme was horrendous, much better off emulating it.

I can't believe I've never considered this... perhaps paranoia about trojans. Do you have any recommendations?

Fairly stable? I presume 'fairly stable' means no FMVs run and the game crashes randomly half of the time?

... Wait, maybe that's Mass Effect..

You my man (or woman?) are a king amoungst kings. Yes that game rocks my socks. Funny how Ion Storm did actually produce some really darn good games before bombing with the release of Daikatana (and Dominion before it).

Here's a nice top 10 [http://www.darscom.net/top_ten_freeware_rpg_games.html] with some good games. If you're looking for a shorter RPG, I'd recommend The Burning Grail [http://www.rpgrevolution.com/game-downloads/the-burning-grail_358.html], although it's not very Final Fantasy-like.
